Cowell & Hubbard Ratings and Reviews
We were excited to try Cowell and Hubbard during restaurant week, as neither my friend nor I had been in for more than a pre-show drink. I enjoyed the look and feel of the place, and the wait staff was very pleasant, however you the food simply was not good...
For a main she had the Icelandic Cod, which was loaded down with a heavy cheese sauce and embattled with the the pickled cabbage for most overwhelming flavor on the plate. The fish never stood a chance. My main was a vegan Salisbury steak with coconut mashed potatoes and tofu butter green beans. I question the decision of imitating an american standard, as the impostor dish invited comparisons that it could not win. With no dairy, the mash potatoes were runny and the "tofu butter" extremely bland. I was hoping the mushroom gravy would bring the dish together, but that proved too tall a task for an uninteresting and forgettable sauce.
I am very surprised by C&W's performance as I had seen several favorable reviews, however it's hard for me to review a restaurant favorably when both main courses were a total bust. Considering the healthy competition offered by Cleveland's restaurant scene, it's hard to imagine why someone would choose to eat at Cowell and Hubbard.
My wife’s birthday dinner. Her meal was excellent. Mine (duck) was not unfortunately. The server was nice to exchange my selection with a delicious chicken breast meal. Had to ask for water refill. And somehow my credit card was charged for a more expensive meal at a different table. The server apologized but this should not happen. Still waiting to see if he amended it properly!
It has been quite a while since we dined at Cowell & Hubbard. Our last evening there was a disaster; our entrees arrived at 7:00 (ordered @ 6:00) and we had a 7:30 show. Sent them back. We did not intend to return but did so against our better judgment, for the convenience. I made a reservation a month in advance and requested a booth in the bar. Despite the fact that they were all empty when we arrived, they would not give us a booth so we sat in the very loud main dining room. To be fair, they bought our drinks because we did not get our booth. Food was mediocre, at best. Strip steak was just average and wife's cod was not cooked. Waiter told us they generally prepare fish medium, which he should have said when it was ordered. Had to send the fish back because it was luke warm. This time, for sure, not going back,
Cowell & Hubbard is one of my staple restaurants when I'm visiting Cleveland. This is especially true if I'm attending a theater event at Playhouse Square, but I'm just as likely to eat there when I'm not going to the theater. The food is excellent, and the wait staff is smart, skilled, friendly and generally wonderful.
We made reservations before a show and this was our first time dining here. The food was excellent. Loved the meringues! I️ also liked being able to watch the kitchen staff...they never stopped moving. Service was quick and everyone from the hostess to the chef were polite. Would definitely recommend!
Great service, very friendly wait staff. Asked right away if we were attending a play at Playhouse Square. Knew what time the play started and made sure that we received our drinks, food and check in a timely manner so as not to delay our depature time to the theatre.
Our party of four had the carrot salad - tasty and loaded with carrots. Two of us had the chicken breast which was delicious, one person enjoyed the duck and the fourth person had the pork. All of us enjoyed our entrees as well as the Hazelnut torte and flourless cake we shared for dessert.
Went here prior to a show at Playhouse. I cannot recommend the food enough. My wife got the beef shoulder and I got the cod. Both are tremendous dishes. The wine list was outstanding, my wife loved here cocktail as well. Service was great. Our server Dylan was great, as was the manager and the other wait staff. We will definitely return since we have season tickets to Playhouse Square's Broadway Series.
We were extremely disappointed with our food. We got the beef shoulder and strip steak and both had no flavor at all. We also had poor service (20 minutes to get our cocktails; didn't bring plates with our appetizer and waited 10 minutes for those; knew we were going to the theater yet didn't come back with our bill until it was past time to leave). We paid over $100 for our dinner and left hungry and upset.
We enjoy this restaurant before going to the theatre. But, others are apparently discovering it as well. They were crowded and service suffered as a result. The food is varied and always good. But. when you are paying downtown Cleveland prices, you expect a little more in terms of service. I put on my reservation that I was also celebrating my birthday, but that was never acknowledged in any way. We will go back again, I'm sure. But, our previous experiences has always been better.
Service was excellent! We had dinner prior to attending a play. We shared a spring roll appetizer. Very tasty! My beef shoulder dinner was perfectly prepared with the beef tender and the root vegetables al dente. My wife stated that her trout dinner was delicious and of a reasonable size. Pricing was reasonable.....
Awesome meal here before a Sunday 6:30 theater show! 2 of our friends eat vegan, and they were very happy with menu choices. Also had 2 outstanding wines with our dinners. Service was outstanding. Very short walk to theater from here. Will definitely return!
The second Zack Brule restaraunt that has been less than impressive. Ordered a drink, did not come, food was cold and unimpressive, and probably the thing that turned me off the most was that I arranged a special dessert for my daughter‘s birthday, when I made reservations, and it did not come and there was no mention of it.
Perfect spot for a pre theater dinner. Service is geared to get people out on time for the show. My cod was excellent but my husband's duck was raw. I have had other meals in the past that were quite good so just beware of the duck. The staff has been very helpful with dietary restrictions.
Another theater season another visit to C&W. Had the chicken, not a big seller, I was told. Too bad, missing out on a unique preparation. Chicken is chicken but when enhanced by a spicy sauce, what a difference. Highly recommend to those who appreciate a bite of hot.
Waiter service was fine, attentive and timely. They seem to have students, perhaps local culinary school? They need a bit more supervision, shouldn’t have to ask for bread when you’ve been guarding the basket for 10 Minutes. Not a complaint, a suggestion.
We lucked out and got the vault room so we didn’t have to deal with too much noise! The food was slightly disappointing- the spice was too overpowering in the croquettes and another risotto dish was less creamy than they were expecting. But I would try it again!
Ambiance and service were excellent. My wife and our friend enjoyed their meals, but my Moroccan lab shank was disappointing. No shank was visible; shreds of overcooked lamb were floating in a pool of broth and tomato, over a small bed of rice....Moroccan spices were nonexistent. The chef needs to visit am authentic Moroccan restaurant, such as Bodega to see how this dish should be prepared.
We've been here several times and meals are good. We loved our salads, the romaine and the shaved Brussels sprouts. I had the braised lamb, which was good, but didn't exceed expectations. My husband had the pork porterhouse chop, which was tasty but overly salty, even to my palate, which can generally take more salt. Our server did say we should have spoken up right away and they would have brought another. Good to know, but we were short on time after an unusually long wait between salad course and entree. We also had a hard time getting the attention of our server to order a second glass of wine. We allowed more than an hour for dinner, so were surprised we were bumping up to show time. Overall, still enjoyed the meal, although too pricey given our less-than over-the-top experience. Will be back but it will be a while.
