I would recommend because I think my experience was an "off night" for Cowboy Star.
Fabulous as usual. Great service and food.
Service was amazing along with the food. It was probably my 5th time here. They had Beef Wellington as a special and it just blew my mind how rich and flavorful it was.
Always amazing! Love sitting at the counter. It provides you a different dining experience. The staff is great!
Amazing steak! Crab risotto was just ok. Service was top notch and our table was quiet and cozy next to fireplace. We expected to pay a lot however were annoyed by miscellaneous charges for things like horseradish, bread, sharing a plate, 4% surcharge, etc. I've been to other high-end steak houses that are not like that. Seemed like a money grab and took away from the experience. Otherwise it's a great place that we enjoyed.
The Parker Rolls and Wedge Salad was delicious and my Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly. So tender and flavorful!
Mark was our server again-excellent as usual!
We love Cowboy Star and always have a great time when we dine here. The service can't be beat and the food is excellent!
The best of the best.. but for the "noise".. not thinking "energetic" is the right word to describe.. would say loud to very loud.. very difficult hearing my guest from across the table...
Now.. food.. service.. the "best"... I dropped off a bottle Burgundy the hour before we arrived and requested that it would be in a decanter and ready for our meal.. "perfect"... steaks amazing.. dessert to die for.. "going back".....!!
Cocktails were great but pricey, wine was list underwhelming and over priced. Thought the $30 corkage fee was a bit excessive. Spicy marg and old fashioned were on point. The nitro infused coffee cocktail, while in a pretty glass, for $20 was nothing spectacular. Beet salad was very disappointing, it was a pressed circle of chopped up red beets for $16. I was expecting something much more extravagant, and really was looking forward to a salad. Certainly did not agree with it being under the salad category. When I mentioned to the server that it wasn’t at all what I was expecting and didn’t much care for it, he just disregarded the comments. The wedge salad had creamy blue cheese and yummy bacon on it, my husband loved it. Creamed spinach was the favorite side while the Mac and cheese was the least. Mac a cheese was pretty dry, seemed like it sat out and was re-heated. The steaks were all cooked to perfection. We had the dry aged rib eye, the filet and the bison strip. Creme brûlée was basic but date cake was excellent! Even though we were celebrating a birthday and spending $400 on dinner, no birthday desserts were complimentary. That was disappointing considering the server was strongly encouraging us to order a birthday dessert. Overall, we enjoyed the ambiance and the experience. Might return to check out happy hour so it’s less risky trying certain dishes that we may not enjoy.
Thank you for helping my husband and I celebrate our anniversary. The service was superb and the cocktails, steak, bread, Caesar salad and Mac and cheese were all spectacular.
The food was outstanding the service was awesome!! We will definitely be back! Merry Christmas Eve!!!
Great restaurant... Easily I’d rank it in the Top 5 of San Diego.
Steaks are the specialties but there’s a good number of seafood options as well.
Portions are enough as to share.
Not for kids...
Amazing steaks, appetizers, service, dessert , wine! Everything! The macaroni and mushroom sides were on point! The mussels were amazing! Bread pudding is my husbands favorite and it was so good! Allee was our waitress and she was incredibly nice and we felt like she was an old friend! All of her recommendations were perfect. We will definitely go back!
Attentive service that was subtle and helpful.
Great space. Steak was delicious and prepared nicely. Medium size ala cart green salad.
Though this is a pretty pricey place, it is well worth it. The steaks we had were delicious and cooked to perfection. The rolls were excellent. We will go back again.
One of the best restaurants in San Diego. Service and Food were top notch. Almost Michelin star worthy
We had to wait 45 minutes for our table to free up but everything else was fantastic.
Not up to usual standards. Squash soup was cold and bland. Steaks were delicious as normal. Potatoes on plate were quite cold. Mushroom side dish was average at best. Our server was just ok. Bread pudding was also delicious. Brought friends as Christmas present. Did not leave up to hype we had told them about.
Our table was a party of 4 and my steak and my customer’s steak both came out undercooked.
We both ordered medium and they came out medium rare...not even close to medium. We sent them back and it took 10 minutes to get them back so the other 2 went ahead and ate their steaks without us...not good.
They didn’t apologize for the mistake nor did they offer to comp us a drink or desserts or anything.
This is the second time this has happened to me at Cowboy Star....for the service and quality it is way over-priced.
HUGE disappointment. The food was pretty good, but our waiter was very sub-par and really impacted the entire experience. When you spend over $500 for dinner on a special occasion, you expect great food and great service. My T-bone was good but not great, though others in the party said their steaks were quite good. Paying extra for bread (which again was good not great) and steak sauces (also good not great) is annoying. We ordered food to go as well during our meal, and it never came. Our waiter chatted with another table for 15 minutes while we waited for him to collect our payment.
Again, for just an ordinary night out at a reasonable price point, it would have been fine. However, for what it's supposed to be, I see no reason to ever go back to Cowboy Star.
The ambiance was nice. However, the service was poor and the meal was not worth the price that we paid. Specifically, the wagyu skirt steak was extremely salty. When I pay several hundreds of dollars for a one-time meal, I expect excellent food and service. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
Perfect service, food, setting for our business lunch. Only criticism is the music could be quieter to enable easier conversation
We completely enjoyed our dinner at Cowboy Star. The food was so delicious, it was so hard to choose what to order. We had rib eyes and sirloin steaks for our entree and they were prepared perfectly. The sides were delicious and different from what everyone else does...gourmet all the way. The appetizers and desserts, not to be missed. And to make the evening perfect, the service was some of the best I’ve had. I will be going back!!
Great meal and service
The experience was quite disappointing. I ordered a dry aged Ribeye and they brought me a NY strip. Even the guy who brought the steak first called it a NY steak and then changed his mind after checking with the kitchen. It definitely looked like a NY steak and tasted like one. I told the server twice about this and I said that I don’t mind eating the NY steak, but they should not charge me for the more expensive one. The server argued twice with me that this was indeed a Ribeye because it was on an oval plate and that the shape of the plate signifies what kind of steak it was... So I guess nobody makes mistakes at their kitchen and the customer is wrong. No change on the bill, they did charge me for the more expensive steak. I decided not to ask for a manager because I didn’t want to ruin the night any further.
The restaurant is rather small and atmosphere is so and so. Water was dripping on my wife’s head because the AC unit was leaking. Mushrooms were OK and so was the shrimp cocktail. Creamy spinach was too watery. I really don’t see why this place would be voted Best Steakhouse. Definitely not worth what we paid for.
The food was outstanding
The service was wonderful, as was the food. We cannot wait to go back!!!!
It is a steak house, and got top aged steaks. Flavor was good but full of gristle. 40% of steak was inedible. With small piles of sinue on our plates, the manager (?) came by, caught us off guard as we were pulling sinue from our mouths and asked “ how is everything?”. Surprised and unprepared, we answered that our steaks were almost inedible ( visible still were the small piles we had to pull out of our mouths) we answered in the obvious, “ couldn’t eat the meat”. To which he replied” we must have gotten a tuff cut”. Bid goodbye, and proceeded to the next table. Seemed pretty disengenuous.
Date night with the Hubby. Mark was a great server and very knowledgeable on his wine.
The first time we came here it was great hence why we came back a few times. This time was l ol for my dad’s birthday. We ignored the fact that the hostess was very rude on our first visit. Figured she was having a bad day. We go the this time and it’s her.. the same rude hostess. Now I’m thinking she’s probably a relative of the owner .. I’m not sure but she’s not very approachable at all. The food took a lot longer than before. The waiter was great. The food was okay.
After eating at more than a handful of fine dining establishments in San Diego I will say c☆ never disappoints.
Loved the experience. Great food!
I didn’t think it would be possible to get so many five star reviews, but now I know why everyone is so happy with Cowboy Star. From the friendly hostesses, the fantastic bar tender the waiter, and the wait staff. I was at five stars. This is before we tried the food. After the way ku beef, the lobster risotto and the bread pudding we were at 10 stars. These folks do an amazing job. Best steak hose I have ever been to. We live 2 1/2 hours away but we would gladly make the drive again, just to dine here again.
Definitely THE place to go for a great steak! All food was well prepared, beautifully presented and delicious. Server was attentive and accommodating. My husband was delighted with the choice of Cowboy Star for his birthday dinner.
Amazing as always!
Living in NYC gives you a craving for great steak. This place is as close to a NYC steakhouse as I’ve found in SD to date. I will definitely be returning.
We had my birthday dinner that evening. We like going there to get a good well cooked steak.
