Cowboy Star Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I chose to eat here for dinner after our elopement. They went above and beyond to cater to us and make us feel special celebrating our wedding day. Food was outstanding! Highly recommend the thyme quail appetizer, the roasted beets, and the aged ribeye steaks.
The service was the best we have received in a very long time. Of course, they catered to us - but we noticed the other servers providing similar attention to their guests as well.
If you’re in the area, this restaurant is a must visit. We will definitely come back on our next trip.
Spouse wanted a steak for his birthday, I had a cold. We put it off for a few days til I recovered and he got a bonus movie for his suffering. I thought Cowboy Star would be a good choice, close to the movie theater and we switched to lunch before the movie. Good choice.
The restaurant has a nice selection of craft cocktails. I chose a whiskey sour, which I haven't had in years, and it was a good choice, not sweet and a bit tart. Spouse got his fave, a dark beer, to add the bottle to his beer collection.
Lunch was the smallish wagyu top sirloin for me and a filet mignon for date. Both were done very nicely, and both were super tender for their specific cuts. We'd order both again.
But the impressive thing, vis a vis other chain steak houses, was the tastiness of the sides. Most chains have BORING sides, but Cowboy Star makes roast veggies or fries or broccoli taste GOOD. The fries are from the appies menu and have a trio of different sauces - house-made prosciutto aioli, spicy ketchup and mustard aioli. All 3 add to the potatoes and even put a nice touch on the meat or plated veggies. Worth the extra $3.
We also stopped in at the butcher shop next store and brought home a few things for the next week or so.
Definitely worth a return trip.
We loved it. We were there about three years ago and liked it more now. Beware of the corkage advertised as $20, it was billed as $30 irritating thing to be surprised by although made little difference to the check. Service was ok, not great. Overall loved the place.
I'm a carnivore and I went with a vegetarian. I ordered the crispy wagyu tongue, 12 oz New York steak, Brandy peppercorn sauce, bone marrow, and the peanut butter brittle with Creme Brulee banana and rum dessert, which they actually lit on fire. It was all excellent except for the bone marrow which I could have done without. I ordered four or five spicy margaritas as well.
He ordered the risotto, bread, brussel sprouts, and panna cotta. And he washed it down with an Old Fashioned. Or two.
Absolutely the best steak in San Diego. The dry aged rib eye is one of the best I have ever tried. Now I have had steaks at Gallagher Steakhouses in New York, Las Vegas, Ruth Chris, Morton’s, DK’s in Hawaiian, Delmonico, Craftsteak, Lawry’s. None of them compared to the dry aged rib eye here. I mean it was absolutely delicious and tender. I had the marrow, tartar, but the steak was the best, not to say anything else was bad in fact it was all Excellent but again the steak was outstanding. Sorry I keep going on about the steak but it’s true.
Cowboy Star is simply the best! It’s one of the top best restaurants I have dined in, and I’m comparing it to San Francisco restaurants.
My husband and I have eaten there a few times. This week we celebrated my birthday. We were treated so well. Our steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The mashed potatoes were addicting!!!😍
I recommend Cowboy Star to my friends already. I will continue to do so in the future.
Great experience sitting at the chef's bar which enables you to watch some of the cooking magic. Service was timely, friendly, and helpful with questions. Thought some of the pricing was very expensive and I'm not talking about the meat. Thought the desserts were very expensive for portions. My second time eating there in 10 years and I would absolutely go back/recommend.
We had an amazing experience at Cowboy Star. The food was incredible (crab leg meat instead of lump crab for Oscar style!!), the drinks were on point, and the wait staff was beyond helpful and attentive. Glenn made our night, gave excellent recommendations, and saw to our every need before we knew we needed it. I haven’t seen that level of service outside of New York City. Truly special.
Went there for my friends birthday and the wait staff was very nice and got us setup quickly. The food was amazing we had the ribeye and the skirt steak with the creamy horseradish and chimichurri sauce. The ribeye came out overdone and we ordered medium rare. We showed it to our waitress and she had a new one cooked quickly. Lived the spicy margarita and no dessert didn't need it. The rolls were so awesome too but had to remind the waitress to bring them out.
We were in town for a long weekend and wanted to visit a local steakhouse. It was easy to get a reservation on a Sunday evening. The restaurant is small, but intimate. I loved that you can see right into the kitchen. We sat in a booth, but there is bar seating that looks straight into the kitchen. Great menu with awesome accompaniments paired with the steaks. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. Overall we really enjoyed our evening; our bottle of Pinot was fabulous as well!
This was the second time we have been here. We came back because we absolutely love it. The food is amazing. I have been to many steakhouses before and this by far is the best I have ever eaten. Better than Ruth Chris, better than Flemmings. Absolutely delicious. The ambiance is amazing and the service is top notch. Worth every penny.
The staff was great and I like the open kitchen design. I stopped by after dinner to tell the Cook Crew what a fantastic job they did on our meal. The restaurant is small though & two of us were right in between groups of 6 so it was pretty loud. Even with a reservation in advance they couldn't seat us elsewhere when we asked right as they were seating us. But hey sometimes other conversations can be entertaining!
Their charcuterie plate had some delicious cheese on it and the meats are all produced in house and added a wonderful local aspect to the plate. As for the actual meal, the Bison NY cut was simply awesome & the Dry Aged Rib Eye full rib cut was one of the best I have tasted in San Diego. Special shout out to the Mushroom Dish made up of 3 types of mushrooms and served in a cast iron on wood type plate. Really fantastic and it rounded out the meal nicely.
All around a great experience and we will be back for sure!
Amazing steak house finally along the San Diego coast. Terrific selection of aged and fine wagyu beef and many seafood options as well. Try the wagyu tongue and definitely the scallops. Best bread pudding and baked Alaska ever. Great find! Perfect wine and cocktail pairing options!
Our waiter Luis was great and made the experience feel personalized and worthwhile. The meat came out better than expected, rib eye and filet, they even comped a desert for my girlfriends birthday. Happy birthday menu which we got to keep. Wine was reasonable and very good.
Overall a great experience and I would definitely go back for another special occasion.
Cowboy Star is an absolute must for any San Diego locals or visitors. Their steaks are unparalleled! My husband and I have been spoiled with great steaks our whole lives and I would say Cowboy Star is one of the best- if not THE best! We both agree we now prefer Cowboy Star over Ruths Chris. I recommend this place to all of my friends and cant wait to come back for the next special occasion!
We hoped for burgers, but they weren't available at dinnertime. We thought, because of the name, that it would be a restaurant with an Old West ambiance, but it was modern and sleek. We split a delicious house salad and the 14 oz. dry aged ribeye. It was beautifully presented as they sliced the steak into 7 or 8 pieces so you weren't given a hunk of half the steak. It was very tasty, but I've had better, much better. Staff was eager to please and friendly as one would expect. They did a very nice job for 2 weary tourists.
