Cowboy Star Ratings and Reviews
Everything was amazing ! It was our first time having a meal there and we couldn’t have been more impressed . Garth started us off with some old fashions and they were truly phenomenal. The meal was perfect and our server ( female) was beyond knowledgeable and gave us great suggestions . We will definitely be back
I love this place. I really do. Probably my favorite steak house in San Diego. The service has been impeccable and the food outstanding every time I have gone to CS. Nothing different about this occasion. Great food, great service!
However, I do have one gripe: apparently they've recently upped their corkage fee to $30, which I find to be excessive and, frankly, greedy, and feel compelled to mention it her. I'm sure many people will assume I am cheap, but believe it or not, far from it. I genuinely and generally have no problem paying a corkage fee. I have a lot of wine at home that I know the quality of and would generally be happy to pay a fair corkage than have to pay twice as much for a bottle of similar quality and value. I know the concept of the corkage fee and understand that alcohol is a large part of a restaurant's margins. My gripe is not with the practice but with the amount that keeps creeping up, CS apparently being on the forefront here. It took me long a while to accept over the last few years as restaurants at this level pushed to make $25 the norm, but $30 just felt egregious, especially considering I purchased over $50 in cocktails from them as well. Our bill was $260+ before a generous tip (north of 20%), so squeezing that extra money out feels excessive to me.
Has it's pros and cons. We had reservations at 8:30 but weren't seated until 8:50. We were placed at a 2 person table crammed between 2 other 2 person tables (they split up a 4 person table- they had clearly overbooked their reservations). This made it impossible to get up without having to ask the other patrons to get up out of their chairs. We were literally less than a foot away from each table- which made it impossible to hear our own conversation- and we could hear every word of their conversations.
Bread was great, salad was good, Mac and cheese was great, but my husband's New York Strip was just mediocre. He ordered it medium-rare but it was medium, and he said it was tough. We usually go to Mastros and he said the steak doesn't even compare here. Disappointing since we were celebrating his 40th Birthday. Probably won't return.
Amazing food, service and presentation! Cowboy Star is a high end place that does a great job of putting the food first. It’s expensive, but you do get a lot of value and just the right amount of attention here. Don’t come in a hurry (you shouldn’t be in a place like this anyways).
I love the Cowboy Star and have been a patron since the week they opened. And I've never had a bad meal until yesterday. But my fish was dry, overcooked and tasteless. I didn't want to complain because my client was taking me to lunch. I will stick with beef.
We had a reservation for a birthday celebration and we had to wait an additional 45 minutes for a table - any table. Not our requested booth. We were only a party of 4 - not a big party. Other than saying « thanks for being patient » the management did not offer to buy our cocktails while we were waiting or pick up dessert for the table. Will not return.
What I thought was going to be a nice dinner for my one year anniversary turned out to be a mediocre dinner and time. First when we got there it was a nice vibe, the hostess was really sweet. Took about 10 mins to get seated with a reservation. You would expect when you annotate that it’s a special occasion they wouldn’t sit you next to the restrooms. The constant traffic of people walking in and out of the restrooms made an unsatisfying experience. The doors made a creaking sound every time someone walked in and out the restroom. The waiter was very nice and knowledgeable but failed to manage his time throughout all the tables he had. He had a big party and obviously his time was focused on them and not us after they showed up. When I received my 14oz ribeye steak, it was not a 14oz ribeye steak. They served me the wrong meal. After a few mins of waiting for our waiter to come to our table to check on us, he never showed so I flagged down the server to inform her that this was not what I ordered. She took the meal back and 5 mins later as I sat there and watched my girlfriend eat her meal, they brought out my meal. I cut into my meat and noticed it was very difficult to cut through. Then after the second bite getting closer into the center of the steak I was less than like warm. I waited another 10 mins for the waiter to show up but he never did so I flagged down the manager because at this point I was very frustrated. I informed her my steak was less than luke warm and would like my steak to be heated. She came back 5 mins later and my meadium raw ribeye steak I order was nice and hot but also completely charred on the outside. I was very disappointed in the quality of my meal and my experience. I would not recommend this restaurant for a date night nor any other occasion for that matter.
Great food and service! However, I would recommend only getting a booth. The regular table seating is smashed close together usually in a 4 and 2 top arrangement. I was in a 2 top next to an overly loud and obnoxious 4 top, we were sitting together for all reasonable intentions and that was not cool. Besides that the steaks were very good!
