Cowboy Star Ratings and Reviews
What I thought was going to be a nice dinner for my one year anniversary turned out to be a mediocre dinner and time. First when we got there it was a nice vibe, the hostess was really sweet. Took about 10 mins to get seated with a reservation. You would expect when you annotate that it’s a special occasion they wouldn’t sit you next to the restrooms. The constant traffic of people walking in and out of the restrooms made an unsatisfying experience. The doors made a creaking sound every time someone walked in and out the restroom. The waiter was very nice and knowledgeable but failed to manage his time throughout all the tables he had. He had a big party and obviously his time was focused on them and not us after they showed up. When I received my 14oz ribeye steak, it was not a 14oz ribeye steak. They served me the wrong meal. After a few mins of waiting for our waiter to come to our table to check on us, he never showed so I flagged down the server to inform her that this was not what I ordered. She took the meal back and 5 mins later as I sat there and watched my girlfriend eat her meal, they brought out my meal. I cut into my meat and noticed it was very difficult to cut through. Then after the second bite getting closer into the center of the steak I was less than like warm. I waited another 10 mins for the waiter to show up but he never did so I flagged down the manager because at this point I was very frustrated. I informed her my steak was less than luke warm and would like my steak to be heated. She came back 5 mins later and my meadium raw ribeye steak I order was nice and hot but also completely charred on the outside. I was very disappointed in the quality of my meal and my experience. I would not recommend this restaurant for a date night nor any other occasion for that matter.
Great food and service! However, I would recommend only getting a booth. The regular table seating is smashed close together usually in a 4 and 2 top arrangement. I was in a 2 top next to an overly loud and obnoxious 4 top, we were sitting together for all reasonable intentions and that was not cool. Besides that the steaks were very good!
We recently went to Cowboy Star for our anniversary and it was fantastic, as usual. The service is wonderful and the food was fantastic. We started with the mussels, which were some of the best mussels I have ever had. Then my husband had the wagyu steak with fois gras and I had the venison, both of which were cooked perfectly and had wonderful complementary flavors. We will definitely be back again in the future!
My wife and i have eaten at CS twice over the past 30 days. The initial visit the food was fantastic, our rib eye steak was delicious. The scallops were superb.
Our recent visit was less eventful. We tried the more expensive "aged" rib eye and were extremely disappointed. the meat was dry, tough and we did not enjoy the flavor.
there was a dog in the restaurant with a patron who kept barking...very weird!
This was a very good restaurant. We took advantage of the $30 corkage fee and brought our own Cabernet. We had the house bread (4.5/5), the wagyu tartar (4.5/5), the Wedge Salad (5/5), the size mushrooms (3.5/5) the skirt steak and chimmichuri (4.5/5), and the Wagyu Strip (4.75/5, but very pricey at $110). Dessert was small and not too memorable.
The service was very good, and the crowd was lively. The hostesses were very cordial and pleasant.
All around great choice and highly recommend.
Very late New Years Eve dinner....sitting at the Chef's Bar just simply made the night special. Spend the night with my daughter sipping wonderful wine (great glasses) and watched the chef's creative amazing dishes!!!! When in San Diego again I will surely dine again!!
Planned a dinner for my parents, Aunt and Uncle for a very special occasion. The restaurant staff were all very helpful and service-oriented. They customized the menus with a special note and my parents/family were touched. Their server Jeremy was the ultimate host, giving them a memorable and 5-Star personal experience. Food was amazing! My go-to for a great night out and special occasions from now on!
The perfect B-Day gift. My husband loved receiving a menu that had a birthday greeting wishing him a Happy B-Day. This was delightful and unexpected. The service was amazing and we felt like we were getting individualized attention although the restaurant was packed. The food was also outstanding!
Glen was our waiter. He was amazing. All of his recommendations were spot on. Several people taking care of different things. Very friendly. Very attentive. It was a Saturday nite and the place was very busy. Any time we needed something Glen was on top of it. Thanks
My wife and I chose to eat here for dinner after our elopement. They went above and beyond to cater to us and make us feel special celebrating our wedding day. Food was outstanding! Highly recommend the thyme quail appetizer, the roasted beets, and the aged ribeye steaks.
The service was the best we have received in a very long time. Of course, they catered to us - but we noticed the other servers providing similar attention to their guests as well.
If you’re in the area, this restaurant is a must visit. We will definitely come back on our next trip.
Spouse wanted a steak for his birthday, I had a cold. We put it off for a few days til I recovered and he got a bonus movie for his suffering. I thought Cowboy Star would be a good choice, close to the movie theater and we switched to lunch before the movie. Good choice.
The restaurant has a nice selection of craft cocktails. I chose a whiskey sour, which I haven't had in years, and it was a good choice, not sweet and a bit tart. Spouse got his fave, a dark beer, to add the bottle to his beer collection.
Lunch was the smallish wagyu top sirloin for me and a filet mignon for date. Both were done very nicely, and both were super tender for their specific cuts. We'd order both again.
But the impressive thing, vis a vis other chain steak houses, was the tastiness of the sides. Most chains have BORING sides, but Cowboy Star makes roast veggies or fries or broccoli taste GOOD. The fries are from the appies menu and have a trio of different sauces - house-made prosciutto aioli, spicy ketchup and mustard aioli. All 3 add to the potatoes and even put a nice touch on the meat or plated veggies. Worth the extra $3.
We also stopped in at the butcher shop next store and brought home a few things for the next week or so.
Definitely worth a return trip.
We loved it. We were there about three years ago and liked it more now. Beware of the corkage advertised as $20, it was billed as $30 irritating thing to be surprised by although made little difference to the check. Service was ok, not great. Overall loved the place.
I'm a carnivore and I went with a vegetarian. I ordered the crispy wagyu tongue, 12 oz New York steak, Brandy peppercorn sauce, bone marrow, and the peanut butter brittle with Creme Brulee banana and rum dessert, which they actually lit on fire. It was all excellent except for the bone marrow which I could have done without. I ordered four or five spicy margaritas as well.
He ordered the risotto, bread, brussel sprouts, and panna cotta. And he washed it down with an Old Fashioned. Or two.
