This year the culinary delights and indulgent atmosphere of COTTO is being transported to the famous Welsh ‘town of books’ Hay-on-Wye, to host their restaurant at the annual Hay Literature Festival. Diners will enjoy a grandly decorated space, the food and wine will, of course, be distinctly Italian. Think fresh and seasonal bruschetta, crispy calamari or rich and melty arancini, paired perfectly with a cold glass of Gavi di Gavi that just seems to magically refill itself. All in the company of classically English period-pieces it will be the contrast you never knew you needed. Come as the sun shines, and the feasting and merriment spills onto the decking to the fore, with expertly balanced Negroni’s and Aperol Spritz’ to-go only aiding the stimulating intellectual debate. Come and eat a Neapolitan margherita amidst English Neoclassical sculptures in a poetic reminiscence of Europe’s latin roots. Come to Hay and come to COTTO.

Unfortunately we won't be back. The food was delicious but the service was negligent despite us booking, and there being only 3 tables occupied when we arrived. Staff were standing chatting at the back of the restaurant with no intention of serving. It was a warm day and the heat in the tent was oppressive, so we asked to be seated outside (where people were seated eating and drinking food from other establishments) We were told this wasn't possible. When I stated we would need to cancel our order and leave we were then told we could eat outside after all. We waited far too long for our drinks to arrive. My partner went inside to enquire where our drinks were where he heard the staff complaining about having to serve us outside. Apparently they were too busy with their 3 tables that were occupied inside! He also had to go and ask for desserts. And again to pay the bill. We were so disappointed with the service, luckily it didn't spoil an otherwise fantastic day at Hay Festival - but we won't be back!

This is our second visit to Cotto at Hay Festival this year. We went last year and loved it, so booked for two sittings this time so we could eat in between events. The food is high standard and all staff are fabulous, friendly and attentive. It is a little pricey but it's a lovely experience! If we get to Hay next year I hope they will be back.

2 of our 3 main courses were very good, the fish and the meat gnocchis, but the mushroom and truffle pizza was very dry, hard and barely edible.

Excellent meals, we had 3 meals at the Festival and all were highest quality. Limited menu but everything we tried, we enjoyed.

The food was incredible. Octopus salad was so tasty. A little haven of peace within the festival. Definitely going to visit the restaurant in Hereford.

A delightful resting place in an attractive setting with friendly service. Good vegan choices. The only drawbacks were the main courses not arriving together and the prices.

Lunch date with my husband. Waited ages for them to take our order. Another long wait for drinks. Then they only brought one pizza - we had to ask for the other - we wanted to eat together. They clearly hadn't cooked the 2nd one and gave us a free drink as an apology. When asked they took the first meal back and said they'd bring a fresh one, so that we could eat together. Eventually both pizzas were served - mine was charred around the edges, husband's was the original one that had been kept warm. And when he went to eat it, was undercooked - soggy/raw dough. We ate what we could, paid the bill and left. Bought dessert elsewhere. The staff we spoke with were mostly lovely but overall it was a very disappointing experience. We had a much better meal the next day from the Canteen.

The menu was much smaller than expected, and overpriced for what was actually served up on a isit earlier in the week. On that occasion service was chaotic with dishes arriving in a random order and at erratic intervals. Oddly, the main courses arrived before the starters, and the desserts were served twice. Despite this disappointment we went back on the Friday. On that occasion we did not stay as the menu had been even further reduced to the extent that it included only one main dish I could eat, and that was the dish I had on the previous visit when it was distinctly unappetising.
