Cotogna Ratings and Reviews
The food was remarkable. We all had something different and were impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the amazing final dishes. The noise level was pretty unbearable at 1:45, when we arrived and gradually diminished until it was possible to have a conversation by 2:45. The server was not appropriately attentive. There was a long wait before a drink order was taken, even longer before the food order was taken. We were not ready to order when first asked but then were abandoned for much too long. One of our party ordered a glass of wine with his entree and it sat on the bar for a good 8-10 minutes, until his food was cold and we demanded that someone retrieve the glass. There was no apology from our server although the person who brought the wine was very apologetic. Not a three star performance by our server.
We’ve been here many times before, as well as to the sister restaurant Quince, but on our last visit we were disappointed on all fronts. The food and wait staff took way too long to show up throughout the night. The crab chitarra lacked salt, of all things. The women’s bathrooms looked like those of a concert venue, and the back hall between the two restaurants smelled badly like it had been cleaned with a bar towel. Lastly, on a cold December evening the air conditioning was on, such that the window shades were billowing and floor vents were blowing cold air onto our legs. It was warmer outside than inside the restaurant. Shocked by how far downhill the experience here has slid in just a year. Hope they can bring it back up.
The food was fantastic as always. The service was meh. We arrived for an 8pm reservation and were seated at 8:20. We had an hour to eat a 2 course meal. Should be fine. We ordered 2 salads, a pizz and a pasta dish; and asked for the 2 cold dishes to be brought out first, followed by the 2 hot dishes. It took more than 30 min for the salads to emerge, along with a pizza, oddly. We tried to wolf down the pizza so it wouldn't get cold, then ate some salad while a waiter said the pasta was coming. Then the pasta didn't come. It arrived about 7 min before we had to leave. I ate it as fast as I could but still could not finish. I did get some very intense heart burn, which was a nice distraction from the service. Then for no reason the came out w.ice cream. I suppose an apology? My husband attempted to eat it between bites of salad and pasta. It was... gross.
Cotogna is one of my favorite restaurants and is a true neighborhood gem. I eat here often, and it's one of my favorite Italian restaurants, a place where the pasta is wonderfully al dente and where they use fresh seasonal ingredients every time. The sformato is seasonal and delightful, too. The wine list is always interesting but not so large as to get overwhelming, which I appreciate. I also enjoy the ambience here, on the corner of Pacific and Montgomery in the Jackson Square historic district of San Francisco. It's an elegant and casual place, where I often run into my friends from the neighborhood or who work in the Financial District. I highly recommend it for both work and personal get-togethers.
Cotogna never disappoints! The service and food are always impeccable. My husband and I had a late reservation to celebrate an anniversary and were seated at the chef's counter which we had requested. Service was excellent and also friendly and pleasant. We continue to go back to Cotogna anytime we have something to celebrate because it never disappoints.
We went specifically to order the bistecca, however we placed the order, opened the first bottle of wine, we learned that someone else ordered the last steak 45 mins prior. It was bummer, but I expected someone to tell me that they ran out before they opened the wine and brought appetizers

The food is good here, but they don't manage the floor well. We had 7:45 reservations, and didn't get seated until 8:10. There were no apologies, just a statement that the people in 'our' table were late leaving. They said we could order a drink while we waited, which we did. But, the drink didn't come until we were at the table already.
A simple 'we're sorry for the delay' would have gone a long way, but we never got an apology. I would't mind a little wait, but almost half an hour was a bit much, particularly when we have a babysitter on the clock.
When our server came, she asked how we were, and I said that we were a little stressed by the long wait to get our table. I also said that we were trying to forget about that and have a nice dinner. She simply said, let's turn the page on that. Then she took asked us about our water preference, and left. Her totally non plussed response left me feeling like it happens often.
This is the fifth or sixth time I've eaten here, and I like the food. But, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth. If I were ever to return, I would definitely shoot for a 5:30 reservation.
Second time I've had this waitress in three weeks for lunch. Next time I get her I will ask for a different table she isn't waiting on or sit at the bar. She is non respondent and indifferent. This time the reservation was at 1:45 and we were seated promptly, but it took 15 minutes for the waitress to appear and she said she would be back in a minute for our orders. Then another 10 minutes passed, she came back took the drink orders (there were only two of us) and said she'd come back for the food order even though we were ready and had been since her first appearance at the table. The restaurant was only about 30% occupied at that point. It was over an hour when we got our appetize from our reservation time and then another 35 minute time lapse between when that was cleared and the appearance of our two pasta dishes. People came and went with two courses in other areas of the restaurant while we sat there with no food and no waitress. Never again. Also, she just brought the check with no offer of coffee or dessert. Frankly, I was happy to leave.
