What Insiders Are Saying
We can always rely on Cotogna in the Financial District for an excellent upscale Italian meal.
Great food and experience. Hard to get in, advance reservation needed.
All items were a la cart, even the dinner rolls for $10. The portion sizes were small. The food had good flavor but we felt the value of the meals was not worth the price. Also, our table was less than a foot from the table next to us, so much for intimacy.
Cotagna never disappoints. It’s a great space, wonderful ambiance, creative and delicious food and excellent-friendly, warm and knowledgeable service. I highly recommend it!
Staff was super friendly!
After hearing about how good Cotogna was from friends and reviews online we were excited to give it a try. While the food was really good, the service was subpar and I am really disappointed in the experience overall. We had the mozzarella & beet salad and prosciutto appetizers, the Tagliatelle alla Modenese and the smoked onion, pancetta & farm egg pizza - all were good but as noted by others pasta portions are small. I made a reservation two weeks in advance for 9pm on a Friday. We arrived at 8:55pm and were immediately seated at a table that appeared to be for 4 people and were a bit confused when the hostess pulled our table about no more than 1 inch away from the one next to us. About 5 minutes later another party was seated at that table, we felt more like we were sitting at a table of 4, not 2 and it was slightly awkward. We got over the close proximity, but still had not been attended to after sitting for 10 minutes, made even worse by the fact that the table next to us (who sat after us) had water and drink orders taken by a different waiter than us almost immediately after sitting. Our waiter, who had spent copious amounts of time at the table on the other side of us giving recommendations, never even looked our way. This continued throughout dinner, the table next to us who sat after us finished their dessert and left a full 25 minutes before us. We were excited to try dessert but decided against it after being ignored our whole meal, dealing with a waiter who acted annoyed when we asked for recommendations and took 10 minutes to throw a dessert menu on our table. We are easy going and didn't complain once, though I wish I had. Even weirder was that we ordered a bottle of wine, the sommelier brought it to our table but then took it to the bar and opened it and tried a glass before actually having us try. For the restaurants reputation and the prices you are paying, this service was unacceptable - we will not be recommending or dining her again.
Best Italian EVER!
Everything was delicious! I had a wonderful dining experience. Already recommended this restaurant to the rest of my family.
Very good food and service , I am happy it’s not upscale.
I have been dining at Cotogna since they opened in December, 2010. I have dined there almost weekly since then and have had several business luncheons at the restaurant. I have never been disappointed by the food or the staff. The experience has always been exceptional.
Went here for our anniversary. They even printed out names on the placemats and made us feel extra special. The brown butter egg ravioli is to die for.
We have been trying to get a table here for a long time. So glad we finally did. It was worth the wait. Everyone on staff was super friendly and the pasta is out of this world. Cocktails were too easy to drink .
Our waiter, Alex, gave great recommendations. He steered us to the fried chicken and ravioli, both winners! The cocoa nib semi-freddo was the best dessert I’ve had in years.
LUDICROUSLY noisy at 2PM on Friday. AVERAGE 86 dB, peaks over 90. Never going again.
Thank you cotogna for making our anniversary dinner so special. The food is simply spectacular and the staff is so attentive and caring!
I was really excited to try Cotogna, after someone suggest I try it bc Flour + Water is one of my fave restaurants. Overall, our meal was good but one piece of it kept it from being great. We got pizza and two pasta dishes. The Agnolotti was a huge disappointment. It did not have the shape, nor the flavor I thought it should have had. Texture wise it did also seem like it had been sitting out for a while, bc it wasn’t saucy enough and the inside of the meat was dry. Overall, the service was impeccable and the other two dishes we had, the lamb pizza and corn pasta dishes were amazing.
We had high expectations coming based on great reviews. The service was outstanding--kind, attentive and prompt. The food was just o.k. and I am willing to try again and order other items.
Issues: The appetizer menu was very limited and weak. Out of 5-6 choices, the fig salad was the only one appealing. it came with several slices of burrata and toast, but only 2 half figs, so we ate 2 toasts with just cheese. They definitely should have added more figs. Upset that the only salad option is to share a salad with one other person, for a $32 charge! Crazy. We ordered, and shared the large ravioli with egg, and it did not enthrall me. I tasted lots of butter and egg, but nothing outstanding. We also ordered the carbonara zucchini which was again, lacking a bite, and very simple and probably should have ordered something more substantial.
The noise level was CRAZY--small 2 tables inches from other parties so very difficult to carry on a conversation. I would opt to try and sit at the bar with the open fire grill, next time.
The drinks were good, but I'm sorry I did not order the one with apple and rum, as that looked wonderful.
So, not wowed this first time, but will try again.
Unbelievably good food. Some of best And most interesting Italian in SF
The Sunday evening menu and crowd was terrific—lively, friendly. The menu is outstanding and perfectly prepared. Creative, great ingredients!!
The pasta was so good, we had to come back two days later. Great staff too!
The food here is outstanding. The raviolo is heavenly, don’t miss it.
Fantastic food and service
Amazing food, friendly staff, I highly recommend! If your looking for quality pastas and pizzas with fresh ingredients, check this place out.
This is one of our favorite restaurants, we go back every six weeks.
Cotogna never disappoints. The food is always excellent, and there are no mis-fires on the menu--it's all good and cooked to a high standard. The service is also excellent; not over-bearing, but clearly professional and well-trained. Certainly one of my favorites in SF, whether for lunch or later at night at the bar.
Was really excited to try this place after all of the rave reviews but the food lacked flavour, was way too salty and I feel like we were ripped off out of a $100 meal
The food was spectacular, service impeccable - sharing the kitchen, cooks & ingredients with Quince ensures the highest level of cuisine, and the service staff are fabulous. Wonderful Sunday supper menu and parking is easier on Sunday evening. We will be back! High recommendations.
Noise level was through the roof!
Been there many many times....never ever been disappointed. Great spot, walking distance to North Beach.
Awesome experience with wonderful food and service.
Excellent food and service, nice wine list! We had several outstanding dishes in terms of creativity, taste and artful presentation. Artisinal cocktails were great too!
Loved the Sformato as an appetizer, and the Rigatoni Nonna Spencer. Both had so much flavor, highly recommended!
One of the best Italian restaurants I have been to in a very long time. Food very creative, tasty and generous. I had the pork rillettes as a starter. Enough for a main course. My pasta with mixed meats was delicious - not a smudge left on the plate! Highly recommend this restaurant, book early.
I love Cotogna and always have a wonderful time at this special spot!
The service was excellent and the food was outstanding a must repeat and I will definitely recommended!!!!
as always ! the BEST
Amazing place to dine. A must go in SF. If you like quality.
We arrived to find our table had been specially prepared for our special occasion. We were offered champagne to celebrate, which we turned down as we dont drink. As an option we were given a non alcoholic bubbly as a replacement.
The starters were good. Cold tomato soup with chuncky options added. Cured bacon with puff pastry and blue cheese.
The mains were ok. My pork loin was overcooked which made it tough and dry.
Dessert was an Italian pop tart which was the dish of the evening.
Ive had better meals recently.
This establishment needs to up its game.
Too noisy difficult to have a normal conversation...If you could correct that.
