Corduroy Ratings and Reviews
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but after dining there last Friday with friends, we will not be back. Where to start? Perhaps with my husband's $16 scotch, which may have had as much as a tablespoon full of liquid buried among a dozen ice cubes -- but it may have been less than a tablespoon. Or with the kir I ordered; I specified (and had to repeat this twice to the waiter, who seems not to have known what a kir is) that I wanted it "light on the cassis." What I received was deep purple, and my guess is that it was 2/3 cassis and only 1/3 white wine. The service was generally awkward, and our waiter literally hovered over us, watching us, waiting for us to order while we chatted with our friends. He had no sense of when to approach our table and when to stay away. Then there was the food. We had raved about Corduroy to our friends, who were from out of town, on the basis of past experience. The food this week, however, was ordinary. Three of us had a salad of tomatoes with burrata -- good but nothing special -- and I had a squash soup that was quite good. The entrees, however, were humdrum. One of us had roast chicken -- again, not bad but nothing out of the ordinary -- and three of us had sea scallops with grits. Boring; not even any herbs sprinkled on top to mask the bland flavor. And the menu in general contained nothing that seemed inventive or special.
This is a beautiful restaurant. It's a shame that the quality of both the service and the food is not what it used to be.
They had my flourless chocolate cake so all was good. Had a new waiter who was attentive, engaging and fun. Friends' first time and they loved Corduroy. Waiter caught on we were celebrating bdays and on his own had special dessert design 'Happy Birthday'. Fish was flavorful and cooked perfectly; I even ate the crispy, seasoned skin. Homemade ice cream selection is always a must-have. All-around dinner was excellent, which is why 5 yrs later Corduroy continues to be a top dining favorite of mine, I always recommend.
It was a very special day to celebrate my best friend/boyfriend’s birthday for the first time after our loss of most precious family members. We both were emotional so easy to get sad but the atmosphere of this restaurant, all the great dishes, and the best server we had ever had made us really relax and happy. He was so kind and amazing. We had been many countries and many restaurants all over the world but we will definitely go back to now, one of our favorite restaurants in the world, (the best in DC for sure!) Corduroy. Thank you for the amazing night!
Corduroy is kind of a hidden gem in its neighborhood, due to the construction going along. Once you get inside, it is a pleasant surprise, nice interior, nice friendly staff. The dinner we had was excellent, from starters to desserts. Very pleasant service, too.
I have been to Corduroy many times because the food is lovely and it is a very quiet and non-hassle restaurant. I was very disappointed in the professionalism of the service this past visit. Perhaps because it was a Monday evening. It felt like we had the J.V. team. My guest noticed it as well. I will be back, and hope the service is back to normal.
Wagyu beef special and lobster carpaccio were pretty good. That’s about it. Otherwise, the bad..... Service was odd, ambiance (on the second floor, the first seems better) dated, and the majority of the food over/undercooked and over salted.
The pork came out very undercooked; and I don’t mind a little pink. I asked to have it cooked a little more and it came back gnarled and smelling of cooking fuel. We ate two bites, they still charged us for it. We were too polite, not a good idea, as the service though relatively prompt could have cared less that the food was bad. My expectation of a restaurant like this is that they should have recognized the problem and taken it off the bill.
The steak and pork came with the same mediocre pseudo A1 sauce. Wine by the glass and 1/2 bottle selection bad (that’s not a huge deal though, just a comment). Wine menu broken and crusty, literally. Pages were falling out. I’m guessing it was from a time the restaurant cared, long ago. Cocktails watered down.
I think this place was good once, but it was a very off night or now it’s just plain bad. It rates around college dinning hall food, with better but poorly executed ingredients.
Plenty of choices in DC. I wouldn’t risk a night out here.
Spectacular Dining Experience!!!!
The bar excels at creativity. Small batch everything. You will get to try same truly creative ideas, and the bar is warm and welcoming. As far as the menu is concerned - It Is Amazing. Creative and delicious are the best two words to describe the chefs creations. Special!!!
I have always liked this restaurant. It is as lovely and pleasant as ever. My starter of a mild slaw with shiso was delicious. Crunchy and refreshing. Main of lamb was perfectly cooked. My guest had the Wagyu beef special and was also pleased with it. Dessert apple tart tartin was also perfectly cooked. The table service was outstanding.
The service was outstanding by all, especially Byron who went out of his way to assist two senior ladies with a parking challenge. The food was equally outstanding: the heirloom tomato salad and seared scallops and grits for me, and the tomato soup and lamb for my friend who was celebrating a birthday. Would definitely come again and recommend to others.
Corduroy is consistently great. Chef Power has a diamond on his hands and its CRIMINAL that the restaurant press routinely ignores this place in favor of places with trendy half-thought-out food served by waiters with ironic beards and pants that don't fit.
After wanting to get back to Corduroy after quite a few years absence it was gratifying to see that it's still amazing. The rooms are soothing and quiet. The wine list is superb, the cocktails very well made and the food is outstanding. We had Tomato Tonnato which pairs dices raw tuna with a deep, rich sauce of tomatoes. Sounds like an unlikely combination but the dish was stellar. Amazing crispy soft shell crabs without breading paired with frissee salad and flash fried strands of very thin spaghetti. Crazy good!
Ambiance - This place has gone downhill. When we went, they still had he boxes out from the delivery of that day or week? Boxes of wine or maybe food were literally out in the open not put away or emptied. This was a sign to the rest of the place. It reminded me of some place that was amazing 5 years ago, got a high rating in Zagat, and then gave up. Lights in the place were not installed, carpet and wallpaper were dirty - the place was run down.
Food - Not good. The food ingredients do not compliment each other at all. Each dish has major ingredient that does not mix. This goes to the salads, the tuna steak, and the pork.
Service - Amazing. Literally some of the best, but the food is really not worth the price.
Two San Francisco and two Chicago foodies truly enjoyed the professional, courteous service and excellent entrees at Corduroy on a recent Saturday evening. Our entrees included tuna, steak, and lamb. The bartender was also wonderful and accommodating to two of us who arrived early.
Marvelous food, terrific service, quiet for conversation, upstairs 3 course prices fix $30 dinner is fabulous. Beware, it is at the bar ant not at a table, but that was not a problem for 4 of us. Awesome bread from Panorama.
