Wonderful food, and very friendly (though somewhat slow) service. My muscles and prawns were *awesome*. We were seated in the back lounge area, which was cozy, but our table was too tall for the shorter guests, and didn't match the rest of the decor. The sound level was perfect but only after we asked that the speaker just over our table be turned down. The front room across from the bar was more visually appealing and the tables (booths) looked as though they would be more physically comfortable but I'm sure it would have been much noisier there. Overall a great place, that's sure to continue to evolve.
Food and cocktails were very good as was service - kitchen was a bit slow but an enjoyable evening.
An unfortunate first time experience at the copper spoon. Reservations were made with some very dear friends on Valentine’s Day. I sent a private email inquiring about vegan options, as the regular menu (online) appeared to show this was possible. However, when we all arrived, we were presented with a Valentine’s prefix menu and a limited regular menu. We explained there were strict vegans at the table and wanted to know what the options were. The server seemed to stumble & mistakenly suggested vegetarian (not vegan), offering us deviled eggs etc. Ordered Veggie polenta. Not vegan, though we had to take a few bites to determine there was most certainly animal products such as, butter or milk. 15 minutes later, the server came back and realized she had made a severe mistake after asking AGAIN. Yep- cream & cheese. There was no offer to have the kitchen whip up something specifically vegan. Overall, we had minimal service other than our water being filled up every few seconds. Drinks took up to 15 minutes to deliver. We asked for bread later & they brought it out with melted butter all over it. Charged us &3! We were not listened to the entire time we were there. The service was poor at best. Granted, it was a busy valentine’s night but we did have a reservation and I never did get a reply to the email that I sent.
Poor customer service & little responsibility taken for the lack of attention to detail.
I would recommend servers be educated on food preferences & the findamental difference between vegan & vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. If anybody at the table would have had a severe allergy for example, this would be another conversation. There were vegans at the table who had been vegans for over 20 years & they could’ve become very sick as a result, if they had continued to eat what was presented to them & told was vegan. BIG Liability.
As a local small business owner, I am super disappointed in the lack of fundamental customer service skill sets.
Pros: Lovely ambiance, great music, friendly service, reasonable prices, delicious drinks.
Cons: Limited food choices and some dishes were over-seasoned.
Party of four. Sunday Evening. We started out with a waiter who was personality plus. We started with drinks. My dining companions were all into mezcal and had a good time with all the drink choices. We had starters of brussel sprouts and Korean chicken wings. Neither disappointed. I had the lamb burger and it was ah-maz-ing! Two companions had the small portion of shrimp and mussels, which was plenty with the starters. Another companion had the chickpea burger and really enjoyed it. We finished the evening with coffee and two companions had the vegan mousse and they seemed to like it although it looked a little too loose to be considered a mousse or pot de creme. Overall, really great special occasion meal.
Fantastic food and very cute restaurant!
First let me say that our server was fabulous. The food was not good and everything was way overpriced.
My favorite spot in Oakland! Do not miss this place!
Went during restaurant week - which was the first mistake! Thought that for $40/person, it would be ample food, but the portions were small and the protein was skimpy. It took hella long for our food to arrive (despite not being that busy), and the food itself wasn't great. The flavors were one-note and lacked texture. The highlight: the hummus was awesome. I should have just had 4 servings of hummus. The gumbo didn't taste like anything except spice, and it was supposed to be shrimp and crab but didn't have any shrimp. The coconut ice cream was the size of a child's dessert. The drink I got was on the rocks (heavily) but served in an ice-cream sundae style cup... which meant that the ice just kept attacking my nose. The server was nice, but everything just took so freaking long, it was hard to appreciate decent service. Maybe things are different when it isn't restaurant week though!
Service was nonexistent. We waited 30 minutes to order and another hour for our food. When food did arrive, it was either burnt or missing elements. Ruined my friend’s birthday.
Poor value for restaurant week. Tiny portions for $40. Everything was too salty.
The first time we went there, it was wonderful. This last time it was restaurant week with a prix-fixe menu, so maybe that's why it wasn't as good. Entree was disappointing and dessert was dry. I'd be willing to try again.
Enjoyed our experience here. Food was very good. I had the lamb burger and it was very tasty. Loved the pickled cabbage. The service was excellent!! My only wish was that the dessert menu had more items. After dinner we had drinks at the bar. We had a great time and will return.
The food is delicious and the ambiance is really nice - they have a wide variety of food and a stocked bar, which is great. I've been twice and both times everyone in my group received a complimentary shot after our meal. The decor is quirky in a fun way (mismatched sets of dinnerware, dark and warm interior). The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, albeit not as attentive as I'd like (head's up - I'm not the kind of person who likes my water glass refilled every time I take a sip, I do appreciate being left alone for the majority of my meal). Both times I've been, my friends' and my drink glasses went empty for a while before being approached for additional drink orders. Also, there was an unusually long wait for food, which, for me wouldn't be a deal breaker if I was given a head's up or been more frequently attended to. Great place for dinner if you come in not starving, and if you have a few hours to spare.
Ambience amazing- the table and bar staff extraordinary.
We were a large group easily accommodated .
We recommend all the dishes on the menu!
Cocktails were fabulous.
We are looking forward to returning in March -
After the Oakland Running Festival
Great drinks, great food, great service! This is a local gem owned by locals! Support Oakland!
Lamb burger was very tasty, the chicken less so. The Bacon for the win was disappointing.
The food is good, the service too, but the noise level was unbearable!
Got a call 5 minutes before the reservation to confirm the reservation. I thought that was a little odd because most places call 24 hours before the reservation. Walked in the restaurant and it was almost empty. Waitress was nice but kept asking every 10 minutes if we ended anything or how things were. Nice but over kill. Food was ok. Drinks interesting. Nice ambiance.
The service and ambience was good but the wait for food was extremely slow. This could have been due to a shortage of staff, but if not, it was way too long a wait for the main dishes, approximately 1 hour.
Overall, very disappointing. All entrees arrived cold. The half roasted chicken was more like the size of a mini hen and it was tough. I could barely cut it with my steak knife. It was tasteless and swimming in a mushy parsnip puree; the roasted potatoes were undercooked. The salad dressing was too salty. The butternut squash soup was watery and tasted like coconut milk rather than squash. "Bacon for the Win"... not clear on the concept. The lamb burgers and chickpea burger were cold. The sweet potato fries were also cold and over salted. The bread bowl for $3 was simply a few pieces of charred bread with a little butter on the side. Not worth it. The carrot cake was tasty, but the portion (2" x 2") wasn't worth the price charged. The cocktails were interesting but too expensive. I added a note that we were celebrating a birthday but the waiter never mentioned it. The entire meal missed the mark.
Food lacked flavor. Cocktails too experimental.
I chose this restaurant bc it was my birthday and this restaurant is newish and we hadn’t been there. Overall it seemed fine, but was oddly slow for a quiet Monday night. At the end of the meal it took an unexpected turn, hence the 1 star. We had a bottle of wine but during dessert ordered 1 more glass. The waiter split the pour between my GF’s and my glass - 1/2 each. When the bill came it included 2 glasses of wine. I pointed out the error to the waiter. Fifteen minutes later we got the manager who was completely obnoxious and told us that although we ordered one glass of wine the waiter poured two glasses and therefore we had to pay for two. The fact that he had split the glass between our two glasses was a concept the “manager” could not grasp. As I tried to explain it she was just ridiculous. Despite the fact that our bill was over $200 the manager really wanted to fight about a half glass of wine. The restaurant was virtually empty and it’s no surprise- the management is horrible.
My first time here, and what a delightful experience! Met a friend for her birthday; we were seated in the back "lounge" area, which apparently is only set up for dinners on Fridays & Saturdays (if I heard correctly.) It was a beautiful room - the lighting and decor were so warm and inviting, just being in there gave me happy vibes. Service was lovely and efficient - and many thanks to our waiter, who graciously turned the music down a few notches when asked. (The speaker was pointed right at our table.) The food was wonderful - many vegetarian options, which I appreciated, and some really fun and tasty side dishes. (I will always say yes to deviled eggs, and plantains.) Delicious cocktails, too! Basically, I had a fantastic time, and am going to recommend the Copper Spoon to all my friends. Am curious to check it out on a week night, as well.
It was Thanksgiving evening, so the restaurant was not very busy. we had to wait almost 30 minutes between courses. The waitress acted very put out to be there. The pumpkin soup was the best part of the meal, the avocado toast was soggy, the cornish hen was ok (but the waitress said it was chicken) and the menu stated apple crisp, but what we got was a cold piece of apple pie.
Definitely not recommending this place to anyone.
Small entree menu with lamb burger not available at 6:30 Friday night...steak very fatty and came to table lukewarm...
Service was excellent. The “Jaywalker” cocktail was fantastic! The music was also great. Kudos to the curator.
Interesting beet salad. A small but interesting wine list. Good cocktails. Definitely "new" Oakland hipster vibe, not our scene, but good food,.
Wonderful!!!!
Great service, food, environment, cocktails!!!
Welcome to Oakland!
Loved it!
Try the Sassy lamb burger. It was awesome. I enjoyed it.
5/5 Stars for our complete experience. The Customer Service from the host, bartender & the wait staff were excellent & genuinely welcoming; Quality of food & flavors were outstanding; Timely & Prompt service of food/drinks; Reasonably priced for the freshness and unique creative choices. I am excited that I have a new place for business lunches or a friend's get together. Thank you, thank you. What a gem!
Our Easter brunch was phenomenal! The beauty of the interior, the sumptuous food, and of course, the drinks with their freshly squeezed and crafted shrubs... equate to the alchemy of the Copper Spoon!
Exceptional. After the Hallowell scandal, we were hard-pressed to find a new Oakland restaurant. Terrific and sophisticated cocktails. Food was also excellent, with shout outs to the steak. Friendly and attentive service. We expect to visit regularly. A+
We went here for my sister's 21st bday dinner on 3/31. Our server was amazing! She was so helpful, joked around with my friends, and made us feel so taken care of. She recommended good drinks and was just overall awesome. The food was good, especially the steak! :)
Great place to take the wife for date. The service was excellent along with the cuisine. Mood was relax and intimate. We will be back!
First time in this place. So unassuming from the front compared to the inside. Really lovely all round.
Just recently found this place & I must say, it’s great to have a restaurant/ bar that opens late on weekdays. The staff is very friendly & eccentric. The food is delicious & they have good signature drinks. I’ll definitely be back! The bar is my favorite. It’s small but perfect for 2 or 3 people.
It was great a to z ... Delicious food and drink, friendly & thorough service, nice ambiance.
This was our 2nd time there. Very glad we went back—service was much better and consistent. Food is good and value is good for what you get. Lots of good veggie options and drinks are excellent.
From the moment you walk in the door, the hostess was very friendly and greeted you with a smile, we were seated and everyone looked happy and enjoying their meal. We were never rushed during our stay. The food was amazing and flavorful. So many unique creations on the menu, we tried as many as wet could. I highly recommend eating here.
