Great food. Sketchy service. Bar staff seemed a bit obsessed with cleaning glassware. Adding automatic 15% gratuity to every bill...even a party of two ...is a bit over the top.
Walked in and were immmediately greeted and seated. Our server was extremely pleasant and light hearted, as well as very knowledgeable and service was impeccable.
Duck fat fries were great- duck for two was best I’ve ever had. Awesome to have a sommelier assist in the wine service. We also were able to talk with the chef on the way out and thank him! Job well done!
Food great...the smores desert was 12$ for 1.50 worth of food...only disappointment
Cute room, great staff, great food. Tucked a bit out of sight off First Street due to construction, but worth the effort to find it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Compline. My husband and I shared the duck for two which was beautifully prepared. Our friends selected the steak for two and were equally impressed. Tasty food, terrific wine list and fun atmosphere made it a great evening out with a small group.
Very high quality food and staff was very attentive. Chef came out to welcome and thank us which I appreciated.
Love this place. Small, changing menu that emphasizes the use of fresh, local ingredients. This week Santa Barbara Sea Urchin risotto. House smoked salmon. Fabulous. The burger and duck fat fries also outstanding.
We were pleasantly surprised at Compline. The food was mostly delicious, though the S'mores was a complete miss. The burger really was divine, and while I was surprised when our most wonderful server recommended it, (because it was the least expensive thing on the menu) it didn't disappoint. The country terrine was very good, but needed four pieces of bread instead of three. The brussels sprouts and cauliflower were good - but roasted veggies are kind of hard to mess up. What made this a four-star experience instead of a three-star experience was the service and the wine. We had five wines we'd never heard of and they were all terrific. We enjoyed wines from Austria, Italy, Australia, France and California. My wine palette was definitely honed in the Napa Valley, and I was delighted to enjoy such a wide variety of offerings from other places. It was also super fun to meet Matt, one of the owners. We'll absolutely be back and look forward to seeing if the menu expands. Welcome to Napa Compline!
Don't miss the chef's pork preparations, all based on purchase of a whole pig and the chef's innovative inclinations. Duck fat fries are to die for and who can pass up the brownie to end the meal well.
We had an amazing meal with great service and exceptional wine.
Had a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner at Compline. Both the food and the service were excellent, and had an overall fantastic experience.
So thankful to have celebrated our engagement at this lovely restaurant. Not only were they extremely accommodating, the service was top notch. The dinner was on another level, the duck was to die for. We will definitely be back! Outstanding.
The food and wine here is simple but authentic and always delicious. The Duck Fat Fries are a must!
The spot is behind the Archer Hotel. Not everything is built out yet, in the new development. The food is tasty and served with attention. However, the menu is small. Basically, a tapas spot. I would need to try when the rest of the complex is built out.
First time at Compline. In comparison to other similarly priced restaurants, it was mediocre. Food was average, service sub par. For example, no coffee refills, restaurant was not busy at all and service was not attentive, presentation and de-boning of fish special was incorrect, two of us ordered wines by the glass, one was noticeably a healthier pour. We appreciate the automatic 15% gratuity in most cases except in ones such as this. We believe this is a case of wait staff not pushing hard at providing a great dining experience. Realize this is a relatively new restaurant and they probably have not worked out all the kinks. Overall, we just didn’t get the impression that they were all that happy to have us there.
We sat at the bar which was very nice. However, Looking into the dining room it seemed to me rather cafeteria like with tables lined up straight and way, way too bright.
Really enjoyed the food and the service was impeccable.
As Napa locals...always looking to try something new. First comment...even though it is listed as First St...it is set back off of First proper...a little alcove near the new hotel...Archer.
Menu is not extensive, but is inventive. We decided to try the salad and the squash soup to start. Both excellent. For mains, we did the half chicken with congee and the pork loin with the bread pudding. Both were very good (especially the chicken with congee), but we felt the bread pudding was overpowering the pork loin. Would suggest a different pairing for our taste. Both were prepared perfectly and satisfied.
Wine list and stems are excellent. Have to call out the service...perfect. Will be back.
Great food and wine list! We also did a wine tasting class, which made our visit extra special. Tucked in the pedestrian walkway along side the new Archer Hotel, Compline isn't visible from First Street, but well worth the extra steps to find. Great staff and service made for an enjoyable lunch. We'll definitely be back!
Innovative for Napa
Being a local, I chose the wrong night - Friday night of Restaurant Week. Place was packed, seated in the back room. Deafeningly loud. Obnoxious and wished I'd had ear plugs. Almost left. Being alone, it was perhaps more apparent than if I was with a partner, although screaming across the table to communicate would have been worse, perhaps. Service was not great because of business; I will try again at lunch or mid-week, because I can and because the food was excellent, love the wine list and want to support my local restaurants. Suggest that they get a sound engineer to go in with some serious absorbent wall soundproofing.
Enjoyed the ambience and the food. Limited menu but very good. Somewhat noises. Wines are quite pricey. Should be able to find very good wines for a more reasonable price.
Late lunch. Sever very skilled and personable. Food was wonderful. A great addition to the downtown scene.
Excellent night out with friends. Sat at the bar and loved every minute of it.
New facility - needs some acoustical treatment to deaden the sound. Otherwise very good service and cuisine.
Excellent food and fantastic service, this is a great wine bar that is friendly and down to earth with a comprehensive wine list from all major wine regions. The service was very friendly with well trained staff that are very knowledgeable on the wine list and wine in general. The food was delicious, a small menu but everything on it sounded amazing, all for a reasonable price. My only complaint is the lighting, they seem to be using white LED bulbs at 3000K temperature, which gives off a sickly white/blue glow. Switch to warm LED bulbs at 2700K, and maybe add some candles to help read to smaller print on the wine list, and the experience would be enhanced significantly.
Our new go to restaurant. The Somnellier wait staff is a plus. Don’t take wine with you, just ask them to recommend the wine to go with your meal...You will be very pleased with their selection. The presentation is very creative. The meals are delicious. Take a look at their wine selections in the front of the restaurant...boutique wines and reasonable!
Food; service; wine... Everything was outstanding. Will definitely return.
Great local wine bar/restaurant. Excellent, small menu with a diverse wine list. Burger and duck fat fries are worth returning for.
Compline is a very welcome addition to our community. Relaxed and warm atmosphere combined with world class wine and friendly, professional service. Offers a spot to have a lovely lunch, full on dinner, or duck fat fries and a glass of wine snack mid afternoon!
Love this place! The owners are great people the service is excellent and everything we ate was wonderful. I wish I could give them more stars!
Solid wine & food location. Somewhat stark decor-but these guys are all about the wine. Perfect for those of us who think about the wine before the food. Happy they’re here!
Kaleb was amazing! Good food, great wine, and overall amazing experience.
Excellent. New. Thoughtful, precise food and beautifully curated wines.
First time there. Solid wine list and outstanding food. Service was very good as well. Highly recommend
We were seated (party of 2) in the room to the far west of the restaurant with one other table in the room that was finishing up. Service was good and prompt. We were told by our server that if we ordered entrees they would take 45 minutes to prepare as the kitchen was backed up. So we ordered meatballs and tomato salad off the appetizer menu. The meatballs were excellent although tiny portion served in a huge grey bowl. Salad was nice but also very small portion served in a huge grey bowl. We also ordered the cheese plate but again tiny portion size and expensive. When we received our bill there was already a 15% gratuity added to the bill and the server said "I share this small service charge with the kitchen" I suppose he was implying he needed a larger tip. This was weird if you are going to automatically add a tip just raise your prices 15% and say you are a no tipping restaurant at least be innovative with it not weird.
Food was incredible. Highly recommend the Bavette steak and the sausage and calamari. The staff here from the lovely woman manning the hostess stand to the servers were all exceptional people. Super happy to have dined here.
Great little restaurant and bar in downtown Napa. Open later than a lot of other restaurants in the area, so it worked out well for a late arrival into town. Excellent food and service.
Great new place. Delicious food and wine, great attention to detail, service was sincere in their friendliness. New favorite spot in downtown Napa!
