Open for lunch, dinner and late-night dining, Compline focuses on Napa cuisine: we support local growers and purveyors throughout wine country's bountiful seasons, while drawing on techniques and cultural influences from around the globe. Favorite summer dishes include california halibut with romano beans, liberty duck breast, hanger steak with fondant potatoes, and our best-in-town burger and duck fat fries.
The wine bar is at the core of Compline. Our wine list focuses on handpicked local favorites and top-class Napa wines, placed among a large selection of worldwide classics. A separate retail shop selection allows our guests to grab a bottle to go.
We want to bring the Napa community and visitors to our valley together to eat good food, enjoy great wine, and experience our relaxed downtown Napa hospitality.
Good things: Quality of Food and service... both our duck and hamburger were very good. Not so Good: Ambiance was cold and lacking... Menu was very limited with just four or five entries. Wine prices were over the top.
Wonderful wine list. Small menu with a great variety and tasteful. Service is class A.
Nice glassware and places are, good food, greatvservice
Waiter was courteous and knowledgable, halibut was perfectly done very moist and tender, had a nice corner table with a view of the "square"'
What a wonderful find in a alley/side street.... I say to miss it. The staff/wine guy (looks like a character from NCIS New Orleans) was welcoming - professional and helpful. Food was exceptional - duck fat fries amazing. We had the steak - fried chicken & duck breast. Ended with a delightful cheese board and flourless chocolate cake. May be downtown Napa’s best kept secret.... but found it in my Food & Wine magazine. So worth it!!!!
The food there is some of the best in the valley. Also great are the wines by the glass. Service is always exceptional, especially Nicole.... she is amazing!!
Way too loud and food was ok but not great, service was good
Food was outstanding. Service very good. Overall very good experience.
Wait staff is excellent!
Such a phenomenal place! Everything was perfect. I would go back every day if I could!
Wine was super overpriced for menu - I don’t need a $200 bottle of wine for a burger
Hi Karen, we try to keep great wines for everyone's budget—In addition to our list wines, we have about 100 wines in our retail shop for under $35/bottle. All of those can be enjoyed with dinner too!
Menu is way too limited. Food tasted okay. The restaurant inside is very small so it got really loud even with just a group of 6 people.
Our server was extremely knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. And the food and wine was delicious.
Congratulations Matt and Ryan for two great years providing a terrific place to enjoy wonderful meals, great wines and friendly atmosphere in downtown Napa! Every visit is a joy!
Loved the entire place. Very welcoming, our server had excellent recommendations for food and wine pairings. The bean salad and meatballs were outstanding options for a starter.
Great food and a wonderfull wine list! Some of the best service in Napa...if they have the shrimp and calamari cakes get them you won’t be disappointed.
We have been here twice. Among the best fries (duck fat) I have ever had. The kids said the burgers were incredible - combo of steak and waygu beef, so amazing richness and quality. Would definitely come back!
Compline is a mix of wine-bar and restaurant. I wonder if we would have had a better experience if we had gone for more of a bar experience. The interior is a little cold and uninviting. There was a strange vibe that made it feel like the only customers that weren't personal friends of the owner and staff (the only other folks besides us in the dining area were two large parties). The wine list by the glass was very limited, which was a bit unexpected from a wine-themed restaurant. Additionally, every time we ordered a drink, the waiter would take the drink menu, so we kept having to do this dance where he would ask us if we wanted more drinks and we would say yes, but he would have to bring back the menu before we could pick something.
The food was quite good, however. In fact, my fiancee went back the next day to have a repeat serving of the chicken liver pate. I really enjoyed the gazpacho and bagna cauda.
It is so awesome that they have a wine retail section. Got some killer Burgundy and just had to pay normal retail plus a very reasonable corkage fee.
Great food and a fabulous wine selection here. This is exactly what people are looking for when they talk about a small, local wine country hangout.
High quality cooking and exceptional knowledge of food-wine pairing.
Not a great experience we called to say we were going to be late and they told us that would not be an issue. When we arrived there was no table available. After waiting 15 more minutes at the bar we decided to just eat there. Wine selection was very good, the food was below average for the price.
There was an extremely rude borderline obnoxious patron at the bar who probably should have been kicked out.
I would not recommend or return to this place with all the other options in Napa.
Living in Napa we are very spoiled by exceptional food and service. Friends have recommended the restaurant and we were looking forward to dining there. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. Even though the restaurant wasn't full the noise level was very high and we had to raise our voices to be heard across our table. Food took 45 minutes to arrive once we'd placed our order. Two of us had the duck, one the halibut and one the burger with duck fat fries. The halibut and fries were good, the other items just okay. We're likely to give it another try but probably not soon.
This is my third time eating and Compline and had my absolute best experience with the food. In the past, there was only one thing that maybe sounded good, and the food was really good, just not out of this world. But this last visit was amazing! We shared the octopus, had the gazpacho, I ordered the halibut and my boyfriend ordered the pork. Everything was bright, fresh, full of flavor and deeelicious.
Compline is a great place to go if you want to get off the beaten path suggestions on wines that you will not drink anywhere else. Don't go and expect to order wine that you've heard of. You'll be trying wine from different regions, all with great suggestions from the staff. And the wines by the glass are fairly priced.
I gave a 4 star on service only because we had to be on our waiter a little with ordering our main dish, had empty wine glasses for some time before getting his attention to order more. But that is the only reason.
The ambiance is great for an intimate dinner with close friends. I recommend sitting outside on a nice day/night
I recommend Compline to anyone who will listen. Matt and Ryan run a wonderful wine bar/wine shop/ restaurant. Great food, great wine, great service! Love the burger and the main courses and the salads and the desserts and DO NOT MISS the duck fat fries!! Menu changes periodically, so plan to visit often for either lunch or dinner. Cheers!!
Had lunch here for the first time. Way too pricy for what we ordered. The food was ok. Service was extremely slow even though there was hardly anyone in the restaurant! I gave 3 stars because the waiter was very nice. Otherwise, I would had given a 2.
Friendly, well trained staff, very good food and an incredible wine selection.
Awesome food, service ambiance and best playlist ever in a restaurant
Lovely place - fun food menu but It's all about the wine list!
Bacon Jam burger was dynamite. Duck fat fries and house made aioli were a great compliment. Extensive wine list and not just Napa stuff which was refreshing considering the alcohol level of the Napa appellation. Had a great bottle of Ceritas. Thanks again, will come back and refer friends!
Terrible service. Mediocre food. No one in restaurant and the wait was interminable.
Delicious! Waitress was very knowledgeable. Dinner was amazing. Will definitely be back.
Our waiter forgot us completely. Another waiter came and helped the table next to us, and he kept walking right past us. We waited because we had our dessert left, but no one came. We saw the waiter coming out again helping the table next to us, and we stacked our plates trying to signaled that we were done with our meal. He , once again, walked right past us. We ended up having to go to the counter/host table to ask for the check.
Not really a great way to start the day in Napa.
Amazing wine list
Awesome small food bites
My husband was like a kid in a candy store shopping for wine after we ate!
Not what I expected and not worth the high prices. The menu is very limited. Entrees were very good, but everything else was a let down. Starters were bland and Dessert was overly salty. For the cost I would not return.
Wonderful as always. Several people in my group had dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate. Staff is always friendly and not to obtrusive. Sat on patio and enjoyed the evening.
Service was wonderful and the drink list had a number of interesting options!
We were visiting from Florida via San Francisco. After an unexpectedly slow journey from our San Francisco base, we were welcomed to Compline! The traffic delays made our dinner reservation impossible and there was no availability for the time we wanted. I called the restaurant and the host was very understanding: “Sorry to hear about your traffic problems. Come on over; we’ll get you in!” That’s customer service!
Our server was wonderful and our meal was great! The menu is good, solid California style with its own twist! My lamb meatballs were fantastic and my couscous salad was composed differently than I’d ever had! Yummy! My husband opted for a burger: it was excellent!
This is a great wine-based restaurant (as one would expect in Napa). The wines I tasted at the server’s suggestion were good. We’d definitely return!
Absolutely wonderful! A gourmet meal at an affordable price. I sooooo wish that we lived nearby so that we could eat there regularly. What a find!
