COMMUNION is a place where you feel seen. A place that feels like comfort, rest, relief, and peace. Our mission is to provide the food, the familiarity, and the intimacy that make you feel at home.

Chef Kristi Brown has spooned her way through the culinary industry for the past 28 years. Starting at a small café in downtown Seattle, Kristi has done just about everything from dishwasher/prep cook to running her own catering business for nearly a decade. From the beginning, her vision was to focus on the art and experience of food through culinary activism. A purpose powered by her mantra, “Everybody’s Gotta Eat!” Chef Kristi desires to build community through the cultivation of fresh food and fine cooking.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Chef Kristi Brown

From the OpenTable editors: Eater, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and the James Beard Awards have all sung the praises of chef Kristi Brown's Seattle soul cooking at Communion. The pork neck stew is non-negotiable, alongside creative dishes such as "hood sushi," or cornmeal-crusted catfish rolled with pickled veggies and remoulade. That plus the welcoming vibes in the industrial chic space set in the city's historic Black district have made Communion one of the country's best new restaurants in recent years.

Our visit was lovely -- we arrived at 8:30 and spent nearly two hours enjoying wonderful food and a great vibe -- energetic and friendly in a very neighborhood way. The fried pork chop was tremendous! Flavors, textures, and comfort were the key drivers in the multi-layered experience of yummyness! Looking forward to coming back again and noted the easy 'walk-in' spontaneity of the later evening opening (seating up to 11pm!).

First time at Communion and everything was so delicious! We had yeast bread w/crab butter, clams/mussels with sausage in a delicious broth, chicken mojo, lamb stew on hummus, with collard greens with smoked turkey as a side. The lamb stew and collard greens were my favorite dishes. Everything was shareable. So much food and everything so fantastic—fed three (including two big guys) generously. Service was friendly and attentive, we ate outside on a beautiful evening. Did note the music inside was pretty loud (though great playlist), so that might be something to know if you want a quieter place. We will definitely be back. Parking on the street is hard to find. Allow extra time to find parking.

The customer service was amazing! Loved all the food we ordered. Nothing bad to say about the spot at all. If I lived in Seattle, I’d be going back at least monthly.

We had been hearing about Communion for quite some time, so we were excited to finally experience it for ourselves. Overall, it was a lovely meal paired with equally lovely service. The vibe is lively, welcoming, and full of soul, and it’s clear that the kitchen takes pride in crafting dishes that spark conversation. We ordered a little bit of everything, and while there were some clear hits, a few dishes left us scratching our heads. The hoecakes? Absolute magic. Light, airy, with just the right hint of sweetness and crispness around the edges. Honestly, they deserve a permanent spot on the menu, front and center. I could have easily devoured a stack of them without a second thought. The “Hood Sushi” was playful and fun, though a smaller portion than expected. It didn’t quite match the version I had tried before, but it was still tasty in its own right. The Mac and cheese was rich and comforting, creamy without being heavy, and had that familiar warmth you want from a dish like that. My partner really enjoyed the deviled eggs, perfectly balanced with a creamy, velvety filling. However, not everything hit the same high notes. The R&B fritters were a hard pass for us. Overly spicy, with a strange flavor that didn’t quite settle right. This dish alone nearly pulled my rating down to three stars. Alongside that, the salad was shockingly salty, almost as if someone had mistakenly doubled the seasoning. It was simply inedible. My partner tried the pho, and while it arrived beautifully presented, it fell flat on flavor. It felt odd that, in a meal where some dishes were overwhelmingly seasoned, this one landed on the opposite end of the spectrum. The pork chop flirted with being overcooked, but the cabbage and mushroom gravy swooped in and saved the plate. My mother ordered the Mojo Chicken and declared it her favorite of the night. Beautiful to look at, even better to eat… juicy, well-seasoned, and deeply satisfying. Despite a few missteps, Communion delivers

Food was mediocre and service was meh. Most of the waiters looked annoyed or acted like they didn’t want to be there. Won’t be going back. Highly disappointed!
