It's well worth the nasty (but mercifully brief) trek from BART up Mission to this memorable restaurant. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings, and it was admirable in every aspect.
The service was efficient and friendly without being obtrusive. In many respects reminiscent of Coi under Daniel Patterson, every dish was carefully considered as a part of the whole. Nothing disappointed, nothing over-reached, nothing screamed "Aren't we clever in the kitchen!"
My friends and I decided to dine there for a different Michelin experience and we did. Still deciding whether a Michelin restaurant atmosphere should be that laid back... We felt something is lost in the overall experience when the restaurant isn’t as creatively designed as its tasting menus.
Taking that aside, the food was amazing. Couldn’t describe it because even if I did, you’ll have to try it to know what I’m trying to tell you. The wine pairing was completely worth it. They know what they are doing to make your taste buds have a blast.
If your are in town there are a lot of amazing options to dine up and above, if you are one of those who think “why should you have to dress fancy and “behave” in order to get an upscale tasting menu”, well, here is your option...don’t push it though, casual doesn’t equal sloppy.
Very beautifully plated creations. Loved everything except we thought that the celery sorbet didn't "work". And we like celery. ..actually, the crisp, fresh taste one gets from eating a celery stick wasn't there. And the verjus soda didn't add another taste...just visuals.
Otherwise, thank you for a tasteful evening.

This restaurant offers outstanding cuisine st a moderate price with free parking. What a San Francisco treat. Foodies of all ages and ethnicities were there with us. My wife could not resist sweetbreads with shrimp mouse , so we did ala carte . The tasting menu looked great too. MAny sherry options on the menu.
Excellent products: sea urchins (first time I see urchins in a menu in the Bay) and smoked chanterelles
A lot of creativity in the combination of textures and flavors
We loved the desserts : a date ice cream with sesame seeds and coconut mousse with fennel
Very cosy place

Excellent food experience. The flavors were amazing and some of the food I had never tried before so that was a adventurous and pleasant experience for me. Both my friend and I opted for the Tasting Menu and it did NOT disappoint. Loved it. Will definitely recommend to a friend and come back for another meal. Best, Marilyn Leoncavallo
Me and my girlfriend love food and have been in many gourmet restaurants all over the world. Our experience at Commonwealth was outstanding! This was one of the best tasting experience we ever had - each course a masterpiece! Fantastic, guys! We will certainly recommend you to all our friends visiting San Francisco.
I never write restaurant reviews and am almost never negative in speaking about a restaurant. I had been wanting to try Commonwealth for wile and was very much looking forward to this dinner with old friends. The service was borderline hostile. We were on time. We were polite and yet we never really felt welcome by our wait person. The food was fine. The space is lovely. I am so sad to say I will not go back.
1. We appreciate the unexpected glasses of champagne brought to us when we sat down. It was our 20th wedding anniversary dinner.
2. Hosts were very engaging and attentive.
3. Hosts smiled when they approached our table
4. We were fortunate to get parking in the small lot adjacent tot he restaurant.
5. We appreciate that a portion of the revenue goes to local community causes/organizations in need!
We hadn't been to Commonwealth for many years and to our delight it was as lovely and satisfying as ever. Food was interesting and very good, definitely a departure from everyday fare. Our server was particularly good. We chose the tasting menu without the wine pairing; our server recommended an excellent wine that supported all of the courses. Highly enjoyed our return visit to Commonwealth.
The food was well-executed. Beautifully plated, with interesting flavors and textures, our meal was very good. However, in a city like San Francisco and for a Michelin starred restaurant, you expect a little more. While the ambiance was nice and the food good, the restaurant seemed to lack a vision or a story they were trying to tell. While (most) of the service was friendly, it wasn't personable. We also brought our own bottle of wine, and the wine director (?) seemed a little put off.
Overall, while the food was great, the whole experience seemed a little "soulless".
My husband and I were visiting friends from out of town and chose Commonwealth based on other reviews. Overall, we were very disappointed.
We decided to go with a la carte based on some of the items sounding really interesting. We each chose three courses. For me first course was tuna and very under seasoned and lacking much taste. Second course was the highlight for me, the charred broccoli. Unfortunately the chanterelle dish was really off. Neither our husband or friend finished and the waiter asked if they weren’t digging it, to which the answer was no. No follow up. Final course I went with the sablefish, again very bland and lacking flavor. Left over half of it on the place. Overall most dishes, and especially those I mentioned lacked an element of acid, and a little salt would have helped tremendously. Needless to say, we didn’t have dessert.
The other part of the experience that was really disappointing was that because the tables are so packed together, the waiters regularly bump into customers and have to continually apologize for reaching over and around people to deliver food and drinks. That isn’t the fault of the staff but very poor planning. Assume it was intended to maximize space and thus revenue, but it makes for a very uncomfortable dining environment.
We came in with high expectations and excitement and left very disappointed and overall still hungry after spending a lot of money.
Les plats étaient excellents et le service à la fois professionnel et décontracté, on sentait que notre serveur aimait ce qu'il nous apportait. On s'est régalé et cerise sur le gateau la salle n'était pas bruyante du tout (mais il paraît que ce n'est pas comme ça tous les soirs...). À refaire !
The staff were wonderful, informative , helpful and genuinely kind individuals. The food was definitely creative and unusual, if that's for you this is your place. My reason for the 1 stars is the ceiling - there is a glassed in cathedral ceiling, a disco ball and medium size picket signs - the one directly above our heads in large colorful letters "F**K Trump". (It was spelled out), inappropriate and really unfair to bring politics unnecessarily to what should be a fun dinner.
What a memorable dinner. My friend and I did the tasting menu plus wine pairing. It was one of the best tasting experiences I have ever had. Everything was so fresh, light and well thought out. My favorite was the sesame ice cream and Madeira painting. Out of this world. Great service too!
The tasting menu for vegetarians is excellent. It is very expensive if you get the tasting menu with wine pairing, but it was delicious. If you are looking to try Commonwealth but don't want to blow over $300 I recommend splitting a couple of dishes and going with a cheaper bottle or glass of wine. Overall, the food, service and experience was great.
We went to Commonwealth to celebrate an anniversary. I was a little hesitant, because people seem either to love it or hate it – but we loved it! From the warm and generous welcome, to the informative but not overbearing wine waiter, to the charming and friendly service in a visually peaceful room, the overall experience was first rate. And then there was the absolutely stunning food and imaginative wine pairings. Yes, the portions are not huge, but this is the furthest from "home-style" platefuls of food you can imagine. It's creative, chef-style food at its best, and the value comes from the thought and skillful execution that goes into each dish, as well as the top-quality ingredients. We were surprised and delighted by every course, and left feeling satisfied on all levels. Not cheap, but a great value compared to many prix fixe options in the city.
My dinner at Commonwealth was very disappointing. When the waitress asked us if we wanted coffee as the tasting menu was now switching to sweets, we were very surprised, as there had been very little substantive food to that point (and the one meaty dish, duck, was dry). Throughout the tasting menu, there was one "wow" taste and one very creative high-quality dish, but the rest was just good. Thus, we left quite hungry, and the quality and creativity was not high enough to compensate for it. The service was fine but not particularly friendly nor inviting. It certainly fell far short of any Michelin-star restaurant I've experienced, and even without the expectations that come along with that, I wouldn't recommend it at this price point.
Dinner at Commonwealth has become an infrequent delight-nearing-ritual, satisfying a keen desire to enjoy the company of friends in an environment that is calm, welcoming, and in which I can be confident the quality will be maintained or even somehow improve time-on-time.
The service is delightful and the staff expertise is excellent. The range and opportunity for choice from the menu is wide, for myself I return again and again to the tasting menu. Clearly I don't want anyone else to go there, because then I will struggle to get a table; I'll compromise - please go there, but leave a table for me too.
This is a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the Mission. We loved the food but the portion size and the cost, given the size of the portions, were surprising. Everything seemed very fresh and was beautifully presented. It is obvious how much time and care go into preparing the wonderful food with the nuanced flavors. We had the a la carte menu. The portions were tiny (and we do not normally eat large meals) but with 3 courses plus dessert, we left quite hungry. The dessert we ordered (ice cream) was delicious but really amounted to just 2-3 spoonsful. I would love to recommend Commonwealth because of the ingenuity, thoughtfulness and care given to the food preparation as well as the outstanding service by everyone in the restaurant, but in paying a substantial price and feeling a little hungry at the end of the meal prevent me from doing so.
