Overall, lackluster. While the plates look great, taste and service fall short. Glad to have tried but won’t be going back. Didn’t appreciate the server trying to guilt us into ordering more plates. Mannerisms of (some) staff were rough and rushed. Not sure if our server thought we would tip better after he patted my back after so-so service. Many of the dishes were too sweet for savory dishes and I didn’t quite get the Asian infused flavors.

My boyfriend is a chef and we decided to visit San Francisco (from Seattle) and knew we wanted to eat well and try to eat at a Michelin start restaurant and this place looked amazing and with not being insanely expensive! All I can say is WOW!! We were both thoroughly impressed with the food, the service, and the knowledgeable staff!! We walked away from Commonwealth still talking about the amazing food the next day! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an outstanding high end meal, (that won’t break the bank) and with extremely friendly staff as well!! 5 stars for sure!!!

The location seems a little sketchy and the building is not well marked. Look for the actual address 2224 on the window and enter at the side. Once inside the experience was simply perfection! Highly recommend the extended tasting menu.

I wanted to try this restaurant because it has a Michelin star. The service was very attentive, but there’s no ambiance or atmosphere and it’s quite loud (to be fair, most restaurants in SF have little atmosphere). As for the food, most of it is worth the star. We had carrots, mushrooms, brussel sprouts, sweetbreads and fish (those are five separate dishes). The first four were superb, but the sablefish was really disappointing. I love dessert, but nothing excited me enough to bite. I’d recommend it once, but there are far better restaurants, so I won’t return.

The tasting menu was delicious! A few highlights...smoked trout, oysters, squid noodles, lamb shoulder and the salted date ice cream. All dishes were excellent. I didn’t do the wine pairing but I ordered a bottle of Rossese di Dolceacqua "Beragna," Ka Mancine 2017.

Although the food was great, I am disappointed that they did not prepare anything for my boyfriend as I have mentioned that the dinner is for his birthday. The guy who responded on my email confirmed that he made a note about it, but after serving the complimentary dessert (tasting menu), the waiter handed me the bill. Sad. Other Michelin star restaurants that we went to on his previous birthdays never missed that part. They would even email me to make sure they get extra details about the celebrant.

The entire experience was overall very impressive. I ordered the extended tasting menu, 140 for 14 courses (I don't drink wine), many of which were carefully designed and perfectly cooked. The arrangement of dishes was reasonable as well. Desserts were less favorable, but several other dishes were mind-blowingly good.
Service was okay. Waiters/tresses were professional, but my waiter could have been nicer.
The environment was clean and cozy, more on the modern/casual side. Only thing to complain is its location. Doesn't seem to be very safe to walk around at night. Drive/uber might be a better choice.
In general, the experience is totally worth the cost. Highly recommended.

We ordered the “chef’s extended tasting menu”. The courses were good but not mind blowing. They need to speed up the food prep and delivery. Our dinner took nearly four hours from start to finish. There was a lot of time between courses and not enough paired wine poured with each course to make me forget about it. While I walked away full and happy, I also feel like the wine pours should have been heavier given the cost.

I was very happy to get a last-minute reservation for five at Commonwealth my last day in San Francisco. SF is a great foodie town (the Bay Area has more Michelin stars than New York City) and I was happy to see COMMONWEALTH had space.

We didn’t pick the tasting menu because we aren’t a fan of Wagyu beef. Together the group of us ordered lots of fun items from each of the three sections of the menu.

Personally I ordered the sea urchin, the squash and the duck confit. Of these three the duck confit was the most memorable. Overall, the ingredients are unusual and the flavors intriguing.
The dining experience is very memorable.

Dinner with the hubby on Valentine’s Day.
We are both foodies and often dine at Michelin star restaurants and we thought the food was pretty well done. Some of the dishes are a little too salty. One of the desserts was too sweet for us to enjoy.
Service was good for a relaxed and casual setting.
Pretty good experience in general.

The food was great, as expected for a Michelin star restaurant. However the service was subpar, dishes were left out for a long time between courses and no one acknowledged us as we were leaving, normal for a dingy Chinese restaurant (actually even then, the people say bye to you), but for a restaurant at this level, seems a bit strange.

Only three minor issues with this restaurant. 1. The chairs were not comfortable so go for the bank seats. 2. The door leads to a car park and allows the cold air to invade the restaurant every time someone comes in or out (smokers) making the place cold enough to be just a little uncomfortable. 3. They do not have a liquor licence (just beer and wine) so forget the gin and tonic to start or an Armagnac to finish.

Our dinner at Commonwealth did not disappoint. My wife and I wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day a week early (because we would not get the chance later). We wanted a Michelin-rated restaurant in SF that had decent parking; so, the dedicated parking lot was a big plus. If not for its location in the Mission district (with colorful residents walking by the window intermittently), ambience would have been perfect. The tasting menu was incredibly flavorful and beautiful with nice variety and amazing originality. Portion sizes were perfect for the average person, but a tiny bit much for my petite wife. Also, they tell you it's a six-course meal, but that doesn't count the complimentary seaweed chips, the sorbet like palate cleanser nor the salted taffy bites after dessert. So, really, it's a nine-course meal. The staff was extremely attentive, warm and engagingly friendly. Total price, including a 20% tip for our awesome experience, came out to a couple of Benjamins; but for our special occasion, it was well worth it!

Really not a fan of this place. I've been going to check out all of the starred restaurants by michelin in the Bay Area, and I can't figure out why this place has one. Food for the most part was incredibly salty. Opted out of doing the tasting menu to try a little bit of everything from the a la carte menu and didn't like anything of it except what the new sous chef made, which was amazing with mushrooms and egg. But the server almost seemed condescending about the dish, even though it was the only good thing my friend and I had during the whole service. Drink menu was out of date, we wanted to try a couple of different drinks, a sparkling rose and one of the beers and they weren't sure they had them. Turns out they didn't. Pretty pricey and small portions, left the place hungry and annoyed with the service and food. My least favorite of the one stars by far. If you were to compare Mourad and this place which each have a star, you wouldn't think they were even on the same scale. The table next to me had a guest that kept spitting out the food.

Wonderful meal. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing on a Sunday night. The restaurant was not full, which is surprising. Gorgeous, creative dishes, and interesting wine pairings, including one sake pairing. Highlights were the oysters (my husband who is not an oyster lover practically licked his plate) and the beautiful squash course. Burnt honey ice cream on a bed of meringue was also delightful. We'll be back!

We splurged with the tasting menu and wine paring and given the price, one would expect near perfection. Instead, some of the courses missed the mark and while the individual servers were consistently pleasant, overall the service suffered in that we were seated approximately 45 minutes after our reservation and in the end felt rushed when offered the bill prior to being finished as we hadn't had the chance for after dinner coffee. Given the non-descript space, it all comes down to service and cuisine and based on that combination I recommend considering somewhere else for that special evening.

This was my third visit trying tasting menu. It was my friends first visit. Unfortunately we didn’t have time for the 3 hour Chef’s tasting menu (maybe next time)

Ordered the tasting menu. Salmon that evening replaced a trout dish. Both the salmon and wagyu steak cooked perfect. However, both dishes was just a tad too salty. Everything else tasted great and executed wonderfully.

I did ordered coffee during dessert. Personally, I preferred previous coffee vender better.

Staff was very friendly and professional (like usual) 👍

Thank you for the extra dessert that evening. 😋

Looking forward to my next visit

The portions are ridiculously tiny on the a la carte menu, and the flavor just wasn't there. Really surprised that this place has a Michelin star, because it's not that impressive. Somewhat affordable for a Michelin restaurant, but the food isn't good enough and kinda boring.

Not sure if I will recommend to a friend... Service was pleasant; dishes were creative, and the presentation of each dish was pleasing. We have the extended Chef's menu, which composed of 13 different dishes. 6 of the 13 were exceedingly SALTY. We are uncertain if the high level of sodium is intended or by mistake. At any rate, those dishes did not taste good.

Came here for dinner with a friend and his mom and was totally smitten. My highlights were the creative foods that were totally recognizable and fresh but prepared with funky moxie and paired with totally unique wines as well as the totally delightful staff who made the evening memorable, fun and charming! My kind of creativity while keeping to the roots- I think this appropriately embodied the "farm to table" vibe as advertised!

The interior is a bit chilly, very open space vertically but tight corners on the floor. We were sat in a little corner booth that I could strategically slip in and out of to access the bathroom from my cushion bench, but not without worrying our neighbors that I'd knock over their wine.
The ceiling is really fun to admire, almost like an inverse pool of water a disco ball casts a shimmery mirage on a rectangle that hovers magically above throughout dinner.

I had written ahead to request 1 pescatarian, lactose free, gluten free meal and was instantly greeted with a plethora of amazing options that kept true to the spirit of the menu but affording small changes that would make it a totally comfortable and non-compromising experience. I was delighted and selected my pescatarian tasting menu accompanied by the wine pairing while crunching on the delightful homemade potato chips offered at the beginning paired with a light and airy vinegar mousse.

I will definitely consider coming here again, I'm curious to try the 13 course tasting, I really appreciate the folks who worked with us to make this a great evening and almost want to go back just to hear more fun stories.

We have eaten at a good number of one-, two-, and three-starred (Michelin) restaurants in the Bay Area, France, and Spain. The tasting menu we had recently at Commonwealth is definitely two-star food. No dish was less than absolutely delicious, imaginative, and a joy to discover. Typically, in each one could taste several ingredients and textures that blended wonderfully and complemented one another. The vegetarian course was perhaps the best such dish I've ever had. Sorbet accompaniments were marvelously subtle. Portions were calibrated perfectly so that a diner is completely satisfied but not overstuffed. The wine pairings were interesting, very thoughtful and somewhat unusual, and always successful in matching the food and enhancing the experience. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and charming. All in all, a thoroughly delightful experience that made us eager to return when we're prepared to face the three-house extended tasting menu.
