Fantastic meal. Unique and unusual. Great attention to detail and easily adapted to individual needs and requests.
A treat, with outstanding service and wine pairing. Sara has proved that her knowledge of wine pairs beautifully with the chefs creative cuisine.
We ordered a variety of dishes from the menu and they had great flavor profiles and beautiful presentation. Our server helped suggested 2 wines we would otherwise not have considered and the were great paired with the food selections.
Tasty, but the portions were TINY. Don't come hungry, or if you are, know you're going to be racking up a big bill. The food is very thoughtfully crafted.
Attentive service and really nice atmosphere for a date night. The cuisine was spectacular throughout the course of the tasting menu. Definitely need to come back again soon!
I really wanted to like but unforunately our experience there went the other way. Food was mediocre, more on the very buttery side. Food portion is very small. Service was great tho. Everyone was very nice.
Overall a disappointing expereince, probably won't go back.
Commonwealth is our go-to outstanding restaurant. It's simply laid out menu, straightforward pricing, spectacular low key service, and across the board amazing tastes and dishes that evolve every time we go (monthly) and yet satisfy every time. It's such a win.
Wonderful meal. Highly creative menu which we all (mostly) appreciated. A couple in our party of 4 felt the menu bordered on 'fussy' and a bit too 'precious' -- trying to be too creative and pretentious at the expense of great food -- but this was offset by others in our group who loved the flavors (amazing sun chokes!). The portions are small and the bill adds up, but in all a great meal. Whatever 'fussiness' might be on the menu design is balanced by the laid back but excellent service.
This is my absolutely favorite restaurant in SF. The most innovative food in the city. The food Is amazing, the service is friendly, knowledgeable,,and prompt. Check out the menu since it’s not in everyone’s comfort level. But it is exquisite.
This was our first experience at Commonwealth. We had heard the name of the restaurant because of its listing as a Michelin one-star dining experience but didn’t realize that most of the dishes had an Asian influence, mainly Japanese. That was fine with us because we adore Japanese cuisine.
We had an early reservation because we had a theater engagement in the Mission District, but we also wanted to allow enough time to try the tasting menu. In view of the time constraint, we did not order the wine pairings, just a lovely, although small, pouring of a French Pinot Noir. Because we had arrived so early, we were given what I think was one of the best seats, right adjacent to the window. Be advised, though, that on a cold San Francisco night, I found that spot to be a bit cool and drafty.
The presentation of each of the seven courses was magnificent and we should have taken photos because each dish was like a work of art. If you expect to leave Commonwealth with a full stomach, rest assured. Portion sizes are quite small. While we were not starving at the conclusion of dinner, both my friend and I felt that we would have been satisfied with larger portions. Maybe if we had ordered the wine pairings we wouldn’t have been as aware of the austere serving size. Commonwealth offers another tasting menu with a larger number of courses (at a higher price, of course), so perhaps that would have been more satisfying.
Service at Commonwealth from the time of our entry until we paid the check was superb. Each course arrived with adequate space between the prior and subsequent courses. All the waitstaff were friendly and helpful. Commonwealth is worth at least a one-time trial for San Francisco Bay Area foodies.
food was just acceptable for a 1 Michelin star restaurant, but would not recommed the wine pairing
A great service dining experience... totally what one expects fro a top tier restaurant
Nice atmosphere and great service. Quiet place to relax and enjoy dinner.
This is a real gem-fabulous food, cozy atmosphere and real value compared to other restaurants to this caliber
Commonwealth is a gem. The chef is imaginative, creating dishes that are as innovative as they are well-conceived. Unusual combinations are the hallmark of this menu, and the dishes are vibrantly-flavored. Portions are perfect for the prix fixe option, with very nice wine pairings available. Love this place!
Visiting the city
We celebrated our anniversary here. The tasting menu was fantastic. They are willing to make adjustments based on dietary restrictions, which was very nice. The wines were unusual and well paired. The food was great and the servers were attentive and friendly.
An excellent experience start to finish! Loved our meal here!
never disappoints - Commonwealth a true gem of SF. Bravo to Chef Jason Fox for keeping this restaurant at a top level.
As always, great. I have never had a bad bite there
Delicious tasting menu beautifully presented by a wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Best all round restaurant in San Francisco! Love it!
The creatively-presented yet amazingly-tasting food, as well as the overall experience, never disappoints at Commonwealth. It's my favorite fine dining restaurant in SF, and I will continue to come back.
Commonwealth was not only delicious, but the service was over the top friendly and and hospitable. The burnt honey ice cream was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The food was beautifully presented and not too expensive.
Excellent food, great casual atmosphere and down to earth service!
Went for a late, light supper. The crowd had thinned and we were able to receive our server, Julia’s, thoughtful attention. Each of three courses were creative with ingredients and inspired in balancing texture and flavor. The evening was entirely enjoyable.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary here, and enjoyed the extended tasting menu. Our 3 hours with 14+ courses was spent enjoying the delicious food that was presented. I wasn't stuffed, I was pleasantly satiated at the end. The wine pairing was one of the most unique- the pairing was fun, complex, and interesting! We learned quite a bit and I appreciated the service given some of my dietary restrictions. We'll come back, perhaps we won't have to wait for another special occasion and return just because.
Bad food. Good wines pairing
Menu was very creative and original. Actually had to google some of the items to know what they were! 6 course meal was VERY filling!
Excellent service and high quality meal. A little noisy, but still a nice atmosphere
We had a fantastic time. Very creative tasting menu that left us thinking after every course.
The smoked trout glazed in fermented juices was wonderful. The cucumber pearls and tapioca were playfully used as a metaphor for roe, while the fermented glaze added depth to the smoked trout that was skillfully balanced by the crisp and light sake lees cream sauce.
While all the courses were wonderful, I found the charred stone fruit with nasturtium sorbet course the most thought provoking. It made me uneasy as it was delivered: hanging off the top edge plate as if it were a cliff - used to accentuate the risk that was being taken putting all of this on one plate. This left the diner ample space in which to play with the many, and seemingly discrete elements on the plate: celery two ways, squash, sunflower seed pesto, wild fennel, and of course the nasturtium sorbet, and charred-until-ashy stone fruit - all the elements came together in a surprising way, beautifully balancing powerful flavors that I would not dream of putting on a plate together.
I would absolutely return the next time I'm in San Francisco, and will be recommending to anyone I know that's headed that way.
Very creative, flavorful, and innovative dishes. Beautiful plating. Unpretentious.
Food was okay but I did not get the wauv factor - the way it was arranged was beautiful and the service was great.
Recipes by someone who is focused on how complex food sounds rather than by how delicious it tastes. Lovely servers
Exceptional artistry and refined yet bright flavors. As far as food value and overall experience I rank this high for a return visit.
Great Birthday !
We had a great waiter and sommelier who made the evening more special!
Love this place--one of the best restaurants in the city. The staff even asked if we wanted to move when the people next to us were being too loud. The food quality is superb--clear Japanese influence on the chef and I love that.
One of the very best in town. Among the most creative menus. Staff is the greatest
