Commonwealth - San Francisco
Better make your reservations before August 31 as Commonwealth will be closing after that date. A wonderful restaurant forced to close due to another greedy landlord. I tried the extended tasting menu. It was incredible. With the variety of cooking styles and different paired wines it felt like a trip around the world at a much lower cost!
The food was amazing and service was great .
Nothing interesting about the food. Lacked flavor. Bland. The wait staff was nice. We did the tasting menu. Approximately $500 for 3 people including a bottle of wine. Expected more. Would not recommend.
We had the full menu for dinner at Commonwealth. It was a great experience. The food was delicious and the service staff was excellent. I anticipate a return visit shortly.
great food, great service and ambience. We definitely will come back.
Wonderful, innovative food and interesting, delicious wines.
Great value for this many course, pre fixed menu. I would definitely return!
This restaurant has won my heart, and is my favorite in the city! ❤️
A small, sparse and tastefully decorated restaurant in the heart of the Mission. The hay-smoked carrots were tender and delectable, the desserts were a treat, and the service was impeccable and particularly patient with the non-English-speaking guests I had for the evening. Every dish we tried was very conscientiously prepared, and there are a wide variety of vegetarian options that are just as sophisticated and delicious as the meat dishes.
I have had 3 amazing meals here before. Unfortunately this time the quality of the dishes was poor. Everything is in place for a fantastic experience, including great service but when the food quality isn’t there it all falls apart.
The food and service are excellent. The ambience needs improvement. They need more elegant sophisticated furnishings (e.g., tablecloths, sound dampening window treatments, etc.). I understand they may be moving to a new location in the future and hopefully this issues will be addressed. My only food criticism is that seaweed chips just do not work well this the rest of the menu. They should serve bread.
Commonwealth is just EXCELLENT.
It’s my 5th time here and its still as amazing as the first time. Creative, delicious and such a memorable experience.
Thank you to the superb culinary team, to depth of knowledge of the sommeliers and impeccable service from the servers.
Service was amazing. Tables are a bit too close together. We got the tasting menu but had to replace the seafood dishes due to allergies. None were replaced with meat dishes which was underwhelming. Food was really good but wished they replaced a seafood dish with a meat dish. Left still feeling a bit hungry!
Great tasting menu. It was our anniversary and the server brought us free glasses of champagne!
The service was very good, the food was beautifully served but the quality and taste were average at best and somewhat pretentious. Too much reliance on foams and the like, which is somewhat dated! Portions were very small. My dessert was not bigger than a large coin and twice as thick as a coin - one mouthful!
This is an insiders San Francisco restaurant with $100 tasting menu worth $300 at other places. The beet tartare and tongue and shrimp were the best ever. We also had several delicious amuse bouche. They even have a parking lot. They are hidden away on Mission near 18th a few doors down from Mission Chinese. They were careful about my guests gluten intolerance. The staff were both knowledgeable and friendly. The guests appeared to be SFfoodies about 1/3 Chinese Americans. This was my 6th visit. You may order tasting menu for whole table or alacarte
Stellar food - great wine
Overall great experience at Commonwealth. The ambiance was open with lots of light. The food was delicious. I went for a surprise birthday dinner. We opted to not go for the tasting menu. Instead, we had: 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, a dessert, and drinks (2 beers, and 2 glasses of sake). Everything was so thoughtful and incredibly delicious. The service was also top-notch. I can't wait to come back to try some more of their dishes!
Commonwealth has always been terrific. My ONLY complaint is that the menu has changed little in years.... If it changed more often, I'd return more frequently!
The tasting menu was inventive and every dish was perfect. The wait staff was professional without being pretentious, and I honestly just had such a great time.
Excellent very inventive food; It had been several years since I had been here and I think they took it up a notch. The setting is minimalist but the service is warm. The wine list is nicely done (though a bit white focused).
Outstanding in every way. Sarah was geat, as always, very welcoming and making sure that all was well at our table( and everyone else’s, no doubt.)
All the servers were great as well, (in particular our setver with the long hair but I did not get her name )knowledgeable, unpretentious and seemed like just plain fine people, l
Food was better than ever. We brought our own wines and the staff was gracious and even able to taste.
Tho we live in the East Bay, we have probably eaten at Commonwealth 15-20 times and were it not for the hassle of getting into the City these days, we would be there regularly.
Thank you again
It’s a foodies paradise
I recommend this restaurant highly
Must go in San Francisco
At first glance menu was strange
But flavors are incredible
Commonwealth is a gem in the Bay Area! That it's located right smack in the Mission is even more awesome! It is an oasis in the surrounding blight of its neighborhood. An inspiration to local business of what is honestly possible in an otherwise declining part of the city.
Oh how I love Commonwealth. We've eaten here at least a dozen times and are always blown away by the food and service. This time we took friends who hadn't eaten there before and they were also amazed. I'm sad that they're being forced out of their location and hope they can stay in the neighborhood.
Nothing to write home about. Small portions
Absolutely spectacular meal. Everything on the tasting menu was fabulous. Wait staff was knowledgeable and so friendly. Loved it.
Commonwealth never disappoints! The food was delicious and the service was very attentive.
Wonderful modern California meal. The trout course was tremendous.
Fantastic, creative meal. Each dish was well conceived and executed. Furthermore the food tasted quite healthy - cream and butter was used sparingly and not as the only means to create flavor.
The food was amazing with reasonable price.
Waiters there were all very kind and were willing to assist you in terms of any problems.
I enjoyed the asparagus and the lamb the most.
Good experience, would go back. Definitely wasn’t hungry after like some reviewers, but they recommended 3 dishes pp and we did that (plus drinks and dessert). The carrots dish stole the show.
exquisite tasting menu with mouth-watering flavors and interesting tetures
This was our second time at Commonwealth. We brought family with us and we all had the tasting menu. Every dish was inventive, beautiful and delicious. The flavors were so rich, distinct and balanced with excellent portions for each dish. We were all perfectly full at the end. And we adored the unique and subtly indulgent desserts. We brought a bottle of wine but also tried their negroni cocktail which is also like a delicious dessert. The service was also top notch. Love the simple atmosphere. Everything about the experience helps the food stand out. Highly recommend it all!
I had the great pleasure of dining at Commonwealth while a recent business trip to San Francisco. The tasting menu was an imaginative adventure of well-balanced, delicious dishes paired with great wines. My personal favorite was the smoked trout. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Kudos to the entire team. I’m looking forward to dining with you again the next time I’m in San Fran.
Maybe they just had an off night since we came here based on the great reviews. Went on a weekday night and it was pretty empty up until we left (around 8 pm). The ambiance wasn't great since it felt cold and dead. We ordered most of the options from the a la carte menu. The food was creative, but the flavors were pretty muted. A number of the white plates we used were very scratched and worn (looked dirty), which really detracted from the experience. Overall, it was pretty underwhelming.
A very special restaurant, serving food as good as any in the Bay Area, for prices that are quite reasonable.
If you're looking for an experience with food you should try this place. We got the Chef's extended tasting menu which had 12 courses (I think, definitely more than 7). They ranged from hot to warm to cold dishes on the temperature scale. The last three courses were desserts. Every course was unique and pleasantly presented. Depending on your preference you'll like some more than the others. The staff was very courteous.
Beware the extended tasting menu is a lot of food! so if you have the appetite go for it, you'll be pleased. The place had a full bar but we didn't get any drinks as we had to drive back.
