Commonwealth - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
We had been here once before sometime back and decided to try it again. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and looking for something a little different, but not too formal.
Food was intriguing, portions looked small at first, but we both waddled out at the end. Our server was helpful, very attentive, but not intrusive.
We will go again.
Dined here NYE.
Summary: overrated food in a fun ambiance with decent service.
We dine out a lot, and understand how difficult it is to make it as a restaurant in San Francisco, and thus, prices tend to be quite high. That said, we expect value, in the form of creativity, bold flavors, pristine ingredients, and precise execution...especially from a Michelin-starred establishment.
Expectations had been raised even higher due to the NYE price hikes on the prix-fixe menu. Sadly, we left disappointed.
Service is friendly and efficient, generally speaking, although one server takes herself a bit seriously.
Ambiance is playful industrial sumptuous, with a disco-ball exposed through a sky-light above the center of the room. Kitchen is open, and music is tastefully matched to the decor and mood of the room.
Food...oh the food...while ingredient quality is high, and execution is generally on-point, it's as if the chefs lack courage. Perhaps they simply like to allow the ingredients to shine, and thus, don't embellish much. However, this lack of seasoning is a let-down on the palate, resulting in bland, boring flavors. This is a culinary sin with ingredients such as prime Wagyu!
Furthermore, the chefs manifested the ability to reveal bold flavors in both the amuse-bouche and the desserts. The 5 courses in between? Not so much.
For $400/two people, we expected much more.
The creative cuisine here is exceptional, the service is friendly and waiter is well informed, the ambiance is just right for featuring the delicious food on the table. The atmosphere is relaxed, but nice. There is nothing I would change. We have recommended Commonwealth to many friends and we will always return.
Wonderful food. Creative and delicious dishes. We all had the tasting menu. One person had the vegetarian version. The food was all fantastic. The sommelier was great and the wine pairings were interesting and delicious. Service was excellent. Everyone was friendly and professional. Only complaints were that the room felt more like a diner - all hard services and tables too close together, and the neighborhood was so sketchy that I was embarrassed I had invited friends there. They need to move. Stat!
Phenomenal foodie destination! Commonwealth exceeded my expectations with their successful , unique food pairings and unexpected ingredients - uni, for instance, and quince paste.
Our table of 3 ordered 9 small/medium plates - it was the perfect amount and we all shared everything. The sea urchin and squid noodles was everything I'd hoped for, and we all enjoyed the large scallop. The lighting is soft and pleasant and service was prompt, courteous and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend dinner at Commonwealth!
Second meal here in the last month and outstanding once again.
The food is extremely well crafted without
Being overly prepared.
The place is comfortable and well appointed
And the decibells tolerable.
Service was outstanding and both Chelsea
At the bar and Chelsea at the table were
Not cheap but for the quality of the dining experience, entirely worth it
Looking forward to my next visit
I'm conflicted on my review. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. We left still a bit hungry. The food is good, but as the Emperor said to Mozart in Amadeus "..there are simply too many notes.." Every dish was tasty, but all seemed to try too hard to impress. Some odd choices, again trying to impress by being different. We were not happy with some of the wine pairings. I don't think the tasting menu & wine pairing is worth the money.
We got off to a bad start. I made the reservation a month ago and said it was for a birthday. The table they had for us was the lone table in the middle of the room, a terrible table. We asked for another but there weren't any. The hostess was apologetic, but was not too helpful in accommodating our request. Tables opened that she could've rearranged to make our request work, but did not. Eventually we were moved to another table. Waitress was friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is simple.
We went for a birthday, the only thing they did was put a candle on a plate. Nothing extra offered for the birthday or our unhappiness with the seating arrangement.
Glad the place is here, I believe they've been doing well for many years, good for them. However, I would not go back.
It's well worth the nasty (but mercifully brief) trek from BART up Mission to this memorable restaurant. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings, and it was admirable in every aspect.
The service was efficient and friendly without being obtrusive. In many respects reminiscent of Coi under Daniel Patterson, every dish was carefully considered as a part of the whole. Nothing disappointed, nothing over-reached, nothing screamed "Aren't we clever in the kitchen!"
My friends and I decided to dine there for a different Michelin experience and we did. Still deciding whether a Michelin restaurant atmosphere should be that laid back... We felt something is lost in the overall experience when the restaurant isn’t as creatively designed as its tasting menus.
Taking that aside, the food was amazing. Couldn’t describe it because even if I did, you’ll have to try it to know what I’m trying to tell you. The wine pairing was completely worth it. They know what they are doing to make your taste buds have a blast.
If your are in town there are a lot of amazing options to dine up and above, if you are one of those who think “why should you have to dress fancy and “behave” in order to get an upscale tasting menu”, well, here is your option...don’t push it though, casual doesn’t equal sloppy.
Very beautifully plated creations. Loved everything except we thought that the celery sorbet didn't "work". And we like celery. ..actually, the crisp, fresh taste one gets from eating a celery stick wasn't there. And the verjus soda didn't add another taste...just visuals.
Otherwise, thank you for a tasteful evening.
Oh, also...special thanks to your informative wine steward.
This restaurant offers outstanding cuisine st a moderate price with free parking. What a San Francisco treat. Foodies of all ages and ethnicities were there with us. My wife could not resist sweetbreads with shrimp mouse , so we did ala carte . The tasting menu looked great too. MAny sherry options on the menu.
Excellent products: sea urchins (first time I see urchins in a menu in the Bay) and smoked chanterelles
A lot of creativity in the combination of textures and flavors
We loved the desserts : a date ice cream with sesame seeds and coconut mousse with fennel
Very cosy place
We will come back !

Excellent food experience. The flavors were amazing and some of the food I had never tried before so that was a adventurous and pleasant experience for me. Both my friend and I opted for the Tasting Menu and it did NOT disappoint. Loved it. Will definitely recommend to a friend and come back for another meal. Best, Marilyn Leoncavallo
Me and my girlfriend love food and have been in many gourmet restaurants all over the world. Our experience at Commonwealth was outstanding! This was one of the best tasting experience we ever had - each course a masterpiece! Fantastic, guys! We will certainly recommend you to all our friends visiting San Francisco.
I never write restaurant reviews and am almost never negative in speaking about a restaurant. I had been wanting to try Commonwealth for wile and was very much looking forward to this dinner with old friends. The service was borderline hostile. We were on time. We were polite and yet we never really felt welcome by our wait person. The food was fine. The space is lovely. I am so sad to say I will not go back.
