We had chosen this restaurant based on previous reviews and because we always enjoy new culinary experiences. Sadly - and to our surprise - we were disappointed with the food, which was neither particularly flavoursome or memorable despite the seemingly interesting mix of ingredients. It was as if the chef was trying too hard to be novel and lost sight of the basic requirement for the food to actually taste good! However on the plus side, the meal was well presented, well served and not as expensive as we originally thought.
3 out of 8 dishes were ordinary and didn’t taste that good. Artichoke dish was quite low on quality(esp lemon cream). Burnt honey ice cream was toooooo sweet.
Food beautiful but disappointed
Most overpriced hilarious place ever. Don’t go here!
My girlfriend and I had a very lovely dining experience during a mid-week girls catch-up dinner. We opted for the tasting menu and were not disappointed.
We were pleasantly surprised to receive two small tastes prior to the on-menu tasting dishes. Throughout, each dish was beautifully presented, and well balanced in terms of texture, and flavor. They also had a dish that creatively played with contrasting temperatures, which we found delightful and fun . In addition, we were very pleased by how were kindly guided through the wine menu and thoroughly enjoyed the sommelier’s recommendations based on our conversation - spot on.
While all of this would have been enough for us to leave very happy, they also gratuitously presented us with a lovely dessert wine because, at the end of our meal, they had asked us to move one table over so they could accommodate a larger group coming in (and needed our table to do that). The meal had been so enjoyable and they had been so gracious, we were happy slide one table over without feeling any imposition, or expectation that they would “make it up” to us. Class act all the way.
The only reason for the four star on ambience was because the tables are very close together (it’s a small place), so there’s no privacy in conversation. That said, their impeccable service (with thoughtful, friendly & knowledgable staff) , and delicious, creative and beautifully presented plates, definitely makes up for it (deserving of 5 stars overall).
I plan to go again, and am looking forward to it!
Fantastic food, excellent service. Had the tasting menu and everything was beautifully presented. The main course was lamb cheeks and that was the only disappointment, but rest of the meal was terrific.
Som service was outstanding, bringing in surprising but outstanding complements to our meal, the pairings were delightfully done, playful and changing profiles as you ate and drank. My only complaint on the tasting menu was the lamb main course. The food as well as the pairing was disappointing considering the amazing prequel. Overall smashing tasting experience.
Outstanding evening, meal, service. We felt comfortable, welcomed, well fed, and in our own little corner of the world. The service was seamless. The food was interesting, delicious, entertaining, and seasonal. This is a huge find. The wine pairings were international and, again, very interesting and well-paired.
Got the tasting menu again. The food was great, as always, but I wouldn't recommend the wine pairing. The pour was miniscule, even by pairing standards. Obviously you don't want a full glass of wine with each course, that would be six glasses of wine! But this was closer to what you would get in a tasting room, just a few sips in the bottom of the glass to roll around on your tongue and get the flavor. It wasn't even enough wine to cleanse the palate after each bite of food, so you have to ration it out to yourself to make sure you have a little bit at the end of the course. And then you have nothing to sip when you're sitting there talking with friends between courses, (which can be a wait of 10-15 minutes). It just felt awkward, everyone staring at empty glasses, wondering when they were going to get their next few sips of wine.
If you poured all of the different pairings together into one glass, it would probably add up to one regular sized glass of wine. Which, considering that the pairing costs $60, makes for a VERY expensive glass of wine. They were interesting wines, but it's not like we were sipping rare Burgundy here. If you get the tasting menu, just order your own wine by the glass or bottle. It will make the evening more enjoyable.
The food was not that good. I was surprised and disappointed and this was the consensus from the whole table. There's a lot of better food in the city.
Excellent meal. Very fun to watch the kitchen at work. Loved the atmosphere.
I eat lots and this was a rising favorite but the service turned out to be dreadful on a recent visit. Similar declines in service at Mourad and spqr and aster so it’s becoming a pattern at restaurants that seem intixicated with turning from artisans to cash cows. a At these prices for tiny portions, that’s inexcusable. For better service and excellent food, try contrada and Contigo and Frances and Cala - all with women chefs and or managers
Everything was amazing. Tasting menu was great, service was great... highly recommend
Superb food. I loved all the dishes except found the artichoke dish underwhelming. Meat and seafood were excellent. Combinations were subtle, thoughtful, delicious and beautiful. This is the type of food where going out to eat is worth it.
I took my girlfriend here for her 50th birthday. We had a great time. The food is not only delicious but it is also beautiful. I think that is what it takes to get a Michelin star because it seems like the only places in the Bay area with them are making these extreme dishes that look so unbelievable. We both did the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing. It is definitely worth adding the wine because it goes so well with the food.
This was definitely a pricy meal but was worth it for a "very" special occasion.
Tasting menu is a must! Had the privilege of meeting Jason. Well worth the trip to the Mission
Awesome food, great wine collection and an amazing service. Will be back for sure when in the area next.
Commonwealth is our restaurant of choice and we dine there at least monthly. The plates are creative, delicious, not overworked, and focus on the ingredient flavors. We always share a taste but then keep the rest of the plate for ourselves. Service, ambience and overall experience are simple yet exemplary.
The food was phenomenal, unfortunately the wine paired with the food completely lessened the experience.
Food was good but definitely not amazing....
Proprietor made me feel very at home, took the time to walk me through menu, talk about the drink pairings, answer questions. Wait staff attentive without being annoying (in fact, were delightful). Tasting menu was superb. Overall, a top rate experience.
Awesome food. Great wine pairing. Excellent service. Lousy neighborhood
Exquisite as usual. I introduced my friend to Commonwealth. She had never been. My partner and I often had dinner here. We ordered a la carte. The amuse bouches were delicious and the creatively unusual 3 courses were perfect. Clearly Japanese technique and sensibility is at work. Chef and entire staff get high marks. Exquisite food well priced.
What a wonderful place. The food was fresh, local, seasonal and delicious. Creative and fun. Service was excellent. They remembered my husband's birthday and my requests for the Chef's table. Thank you!
Portions are very small. They advise 3 dishes per person and even then I think you would still be hungry. We wanted to try the tasting menu, which had a lot of good things on it, but was a bit pricey at $85/person. I recommend the Scallop, Sea Urchin, Cabbage and Hen. Do not recommend the Shrimp Mousse. Also would not recommend for anyone pregnant either.
Tasting menu was really good. Wine pairings were okay.
From the outside the street you can't this place serve great food. Place is considered very small so table to table is a bit close. Tried the tasting menu with wine paring and I'm impressed by every dishes it offered. Love their sea food dishes especially! Great experience and price also very reasonable, this could be one of the most affordable Michelin Stared restaurants that won't disappoint you.
Great selection of tasting menu for the price. Quiet atmosphere and great service.
The three of us had sampled their Tasting Menu, Seven course. The food was tasty, but when they say tasting menu, they literally meant it because the food portions were really small. And unlike other restaurants, no bread was served. After the seven course meal for about $90 person, the three of us left the restaurant feeling hungry.
Too expensive and the food is not so good. Just the desert. Sorry :(
I went here a couple times way back in the day when they just opened. It was pretty good. But my most recent visit, the food just did not taste good. It's like they were trying too hard to be complex and everything just ended up not quite working out. The flavors lacked intensity and focus. Also one dish was way too sweet. A lot of the dishes were lukewarm or room temp, just personal preference, I like my food on the hot side. What happened to this place?
Staff were super! They were very knowledgeable, provided a warm welcome feeling and were attentive.
The food was beautifully presented, but the flavor combinations didn't work for us. The taste of the food was generally underwhelming.
Still one of the best kept secrets in SF
fantastic tasting menu! well timed and pleasant experience
There were a lot of things that were off for us. We had a reservation and they seated us very late. It felt crowded and we had no where to stand while waiting for our table because every part of the restaurant was utilized since the restaurant is small. Some of their dishes were definitely creative, but the beef which was the main entree on the tasting menu was extremely fatty and I couldn’t eat it. I was really bummed overall because it was an expensive night/dinner and it is rare that we get a date night out together.
What can we say? Consistent exciting food. Great service. Great sommelier. We definitely come here on occasion. And wonder why not more often. The uni and squid was amazing. The sweet bread and shrimp was so delicious and complex
The wine pairing was interesting and unique
Really had a memorable laid back evening
Kudos to Jason Fox for keeping it up!!!!
The tasting menu was good, and I really liked the wine pairings. However, the portions were very small and I was still a bit hungry by the end of the meal.
Overall this was a pleasant experience to say the least. My coworker and I are both cooks in San Francisco and were excited to go out to eat and chose this place for a couple reasons. The tasting menu was cheap and it seemed like it was off the beaten path. We sat and ate the menu and everything was perfect. The dishes were simple, elegant, and not too big or small. Portions kept you wanting more but did not fill your stomach. The wait staff was pretty cool and cooks seemed like they were knowledgable. Highly recommend to all cooks looking to eat on a Michelin budget, or people just looking for an experimental meal.
Fabulous restaurant. From food to service to ambiance 10’s all around
One of SF's creative gems!
