A friend an I needed to meet for lunch in Old City. I found Commonwealth on a discount web site and checked out their menu and Yelp reviews. They were decent. I went to the restaurant's web site and saw they were open for lunch 11-2. I went on Open Table and made a reservation. It said tables were available at 12:30 that day. I got a confirmed reservation for OT.

Well,, I met my friend at the restaurant and it was CLOSED. We had to go somewhere else at last minute. I called the restaurant that night and the women who answered said "No we won't open for lunch until next Spring". I mentioned that they should have seen the reservation and called me and changed their own web site. In fact they had a lunch menu posted outside the restaurant.

So, they have lost my future business for not being attentive. And, no I can't tell you about the quality of the food. Hard to eat when you can't get in, even though they advertise lunch.

Left medium stars Bc I don’t know! We didn’t get to eat. I had been meaning to check this place out; had a lunch date so I checked the restaurant’s hours and made a reservation on opentable. We walked over to find the lights on but the doors locked and the stools on the bar. Restaurant next door had no idea why the place was locked (and seemingly closed). Disappointing! Boo hiss.

Our waiter was absolutely amazing! The service was wonderful and quick. We ordered a cheese plate and it was HUGE, especially for the low price. Definitely recommended!!!

Nice place. Been looking forward to this for brunch with my mom and wife. Service was good but I ordered shrimp and grits and was told they were out. So I ordered pork belly hash my wife ordered croque madam and my mom the country Benedict. Our server came back and said they were out of that as well. I wasn't going to eat at all, was very disappointed. I decided on biscuits and gravyNext my meal comes out in minutes and nothing for my mom or wife for about 5 minutes. My biscuits were very thin and dry , potatoes had no flavor at all. Some salt would have been nice. My meal was comped but overall a poor experience. We will unfortunately not be back

Common Wealth is on the edge of Philly's Olde City area. There are many small restaurants in the area. There is both street and garage parking nearby. It was Sunday at about 5 pm. We found street parking at $2.50/hr. The restaurant has outside seating both on Market St. and a more quite side deck. We choose to sit inside as the weather was a little chilly. I had an excellent cucumber & watermelon salad with creamy feta cheese dressing and the red fish with rice. The fish dish reminded me of wonderful red fish dinners I have had, over the years, in New Orleans. Highly recommend this dish. My wife had the beet and carrot salad, along with the scallops and collard greens. Both were starter portions, because she was saving room for dessert. For dessert my wife had the Crème Brulee, which was excellent. I had the ricotta dumplings, 4 freshly deep fried dumplings served with a sweet cream sauce. The consistency reminded me of binets from the Café du Monde, but better, because they also had sweeten ricotta cheese as one of the ingredients. Definitely have them for dessert. There are 4 of them so you can share.

Atmosphere and staff were pleasant. However, I was disappointed with my entree. I ordered the country style benedict. The menu states a cheddar cheese biscuit and I received an English muffin with a slice of cheddar melted on top. The server recommended the fried chicken, looked good but was very dry and overcooked. My partner ordered the chicken and waffles. It was good but also the chicken was dry and overlooked.

This place is great if you are looking for some drinks and a step above bar food at a reasonable price. It's not a "romantic date" place or "hot new place". It's a straight up neighborhood place where you xan hang with friends that happens to be in Center City. Also has evening musical entertainment.

The staff were terrific. The interior is quite noisy - perhaps due to the speakers in the rear of the restaurant facing toward the front - causing one to have to speak very loudly to be heard by others at the table. The food was quite good, although a note to the chef - it's important to "de-fat" the sauce prior to serving. The short ribs sauce had a couple millimeters of clear fat floating on top. Chill the sauce overnight and the fat can be lifted away.

The outside seating was nice. My friends enjoyed their food - was expencive for the quality. They dont have many choices for wine at all. One red by the glass and a few whites, or you buy by the bottle.

Marginal at best. Craig Le Ban recommended the oysters bienville. Tasted like oysters with Campbell's condensed soup on top. Beet salad was institutional cafeteria grade. Seared scallops on sweet corn hoecakes with collards included one collard. I did not think you could reduce such a succulent and prodigious vegetable to a single leaf between a scallop and a corn pancake. A $14 Martini that was only meh, a Sazerac that lacked bite ... not impressed.

So, while the food was an underachievement, the atmosphere was bombastic. Apparently, West Philly was having a birthday or similar on the patio/party deck. Hooting, hollering, and (the worst) cackling rang out through the early evening dinner hour. Well, at least they were having fun. Won't be back. Ever. Pseudo-Cajun cuisine is sorely lacking and after that, there's not much to discuss.

Went for restaurant week because the menu selections were great. I was disappointed with the portion sizes, the crawfish hush puppies were flavor- less and clearly without crawfish. The red snapper was overcooked. The shellfish and grits was flavorful and enjoyable. The ambience was probably the best part of the visit.

We requested an outdoors table when we made the reservation and they tried to give us a table on the street with our baby while it was raining on and off so we waited 45 min for a table on the patio. It was restaraunt week, and the food was just OK. Scallops were chewy, crawfish bites my wife got were so dry. My entree was 4 ravioli, not remotely filling. Went home hungry. The salads were OK, nothing special. The ricotta donuts were the best part. Wasn't worth $100 meal, won't be coming again.

The food was underwhelming. The actual dishes are nothing like the description. Almost all the dishes were salty. I ordered the scallops appetizer which was overcooked and smothered in a brown sauce. The gumbo was good but the more I ate it the more salty it got. The pork entree had 8 pieces of meat, the rest was all fat. I didn't even eat the sweet potatoe puree underneath. It didn't pair well with the pork. The asparagus was mush. I was greatly disappointed in the ricotta beignets. It was too chewy and hard. Not light & fluffy.
What made this experience wonderful was our server, Victoria. She was a delight and made us overlook the mediocre food. Everyone at our table agrees that she is like a Disney princess.

The food was delicious and the service was great. I would have liked the grits in the seafood and grits to have its own flavor. Seafood was cooked to perfection but the grits were a little bland. Fried green tomatoes were delish as was the gumbo and very filling. The ricotta doughnuts were a nice end to the meal.

We went to Common Wealth during Restaurant Week and loved it. The special menu had a nice selection of entrees so that everyone got what they wanted. I had the seafood grits which consisted of shrimp and scallops on creamy grits with a delicious sauce. Since we arrived early we were able to take advantage of the happy hour pricing on drinks. Everyone left satisfied and happy. I would return again. The Southern style cuisine is delicious.

My friends and I dined here for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place was practically empty which is never a good sign for brunch in the city. Once at our table, we were first greeted by our server who looked like he slept in his dirty uniform from the day before. Apparently his previous night out was so good, you could still smell the alcohol on him. Next we ordered drinks and based on the time to make them, we assumed the bar tenders were distilling the alcohol for each drink. We ordered an app for the table and full meals for each of the five of us. The app came out without any issue then three of the five dishes came out. My other two friends waited, and waited, and waited some more for their food to arrive. 15 minutes and two discussions with the manager later and one plate arrived. Then a few minutes later, the last one. We further complained because it was apparent that the last two dishes sat under the heating lamps for a very long time. I assume our waiter forgot they were there. This is evident in dry, hard food that had a well formed 'crust' on it and plates hot to the tough. When this info was presented to the manager, she said we were wrong and that food never sits for extended periods of time. There were other minor issues not worth writing about here. Towards the end, the manager put little effort into fixing the issues while our waiter avoided our table. We won't be back. Our friends won't be back.

We were referred here by the desk clerk at the nearby Wyndham Hotel. He suggested we try the shellfish and grits which we did, and also the oysters bienville. We were very happy with both. Our waitress Victoria was very helpful and pleasant. Happy hour from 5-7 pm was a great deal on drinks and small plates. The next evening we stopped by again just to have a drink on the patio which was very pleasant!
