Food was delicious and the service was friendly. A great meal!
Great food but the seats are uncomfortable.
Great service and food was delicious!
The restaurant specializes in "comfort food" that is a bit elevated above diner level. Our meal was delicious and the ambience is "neighborhood bar" comfortable.
Service great, food was good, although the chicken breast (on the 1/2 chicken) was very dry.
I cannot live happily for long without the yummy vegetable sides at Comfort. Easy to do gluten-free here, also.
Fabulous food and service.
Perfect evening. There was a large group in front so they automatically seated us toward the rear in what turned out to be a perfect location...quiet and full of downhome charm. Service was excellent and southern food was very good. Would not hesitate to recommend Comfort to anyone visiting Richmond.
Fantastic meal! For apps we tried the fried okra (which was made gluten-free! Yay!) and it was fantastic. Cut length-wise instead of in rounds, the okra was crispy and not greasy in the least. Delicious ham rolls and pimento spread, too! The entrees and sides were all wonderful. We had a group of 7 people, so the sides were served family style, which was fun. Most of the table came from out of town, so I feel like Comfort showed them how amazing our restaurants are here in Richmond. The service was perfect...our waiter was very accommodating and friendly. The out-of-towners were on expense accounts, so we needed everyone's checks to be separate and that wasn't an issue. The only bummer was that someone's 3 ribs didn't make it in the leftovers box. Those ribs were marinated, boiled, baked and fried...ham flavored and so delicious we all had a taste. The person who ordered them was so sad when they got back to the hotel and saw they were missing. But it's cool! Those things happen. Will be going back myself soon, and will recommend Comfort whenever someone asks for a great place to go.
Comfort has been a favorite for a long time. We drove from Harrisonburg to Richmond this time because we missed the banana pudding. The smoked pork tenderloin was great!
This restaurant donates its profits to Feedmore. Food was excellent, drinks were good and service was great.
Amazing appetizers! We had the pickled platter, the mixed fry and the pimento starter - outstanding! Really good drinks. Yummy grits. The pulled pork was delightful.
Delicious food, very loud when the place is full.
Food was not that great; and the drinks was horrible. I would not recommended to anyone. There was nothing comfortable about it and Flys were flying everywhere you literally had to keep food and drinks covered. Yuck!
Seated fast service was very slow. Had bartender was our server. Food was awful!!!!! To salty could eat it.
Food was outstanding! Only issue was that a couple of dishes were oversalted - the greens in particular. Nice space, but it was very noisy. Service was good, but a little slow. Waiter was great after he warmed up. We had pickled vegetables to start, catfish with okra and mashed potatoes, fried green tomatoes with roasted beets and cheddar grits, other sides were macaroni & cheese and greens. Beets and okra and mac & cheese were wonderful! Catfish, potatoes, and grits were fantastic!
Been there twice now. The food is amazing! I had a pork tenderloin with red wine applesauce the first visit and a roasted half chicken the second. Both were cooked perfectly and had such amazing flavors. Girlfriend got the meatloaf both visits because she enjoyed it so much. Service each time was a bit lacking. The wait between clearing the table and getting the bill was a little long. Also, after ordering a second beer I never got it. Food-amazing! Service could be improved.
The ham rolls and pickled veggies are a must (put some pickled red onion on the ham rolls... you'll thank me later!)! My friend & I split the veggie plate which is 4 or 5 of the sides. Holy. Moly. We were stuffed!! I've been coming to comfort for years & have never had anything that I didn't love!
We have dined at Comfort for many years and have always loved the food. On our recent time there a few days ago, the food was not as it had once been and the portions were very small for the price. We were so disappointed. I hope if it is an issue with chef help, it will be solved quickly. It will be awhile before we visit again. We spent $100 on 3 people and left hungry.
Great small plates and vegetables === highly recommend
We love eating downtown and had a gift coupon for Comfort. Funky vibe, great wait staff but the cook staff needs to step up. The Cesar Salad had cornbread croutons that tasted like "last week". We both ordered fried catfish w/collards and mashed potatoes. The sides were excellent but in both our orders the fish was not done in the middle, as in cold. We didn't notice until we had eated some so said nothing. This is the second visit for us but I can't see going back.
The special entree Grilled trout with crabmeat & lemon was outstanding. The skin was the perfect char and crispness and really added to the overall flavor. Another diner at my table also ordered that. We both loved it and encouraged the restaurant to add it to the regular menu. I always enjoy the large selection of vegetables at Comfort. In addition to the normal selection, there were additional ones for the evening. One of the few restaurants where you have a wide choice of veggies. Another of my table mates ordered a vegetable plate to enjoy an especially large selection. Great food and value in addition to the charitable mission. You can’t beat that combination.
The food was very good. The waiter was awesome. Very nice place
Been here before; this visit was with a gift certificate given after hints dropped.
Good old Southern classics, some with a twist. The meatloaf was excellent, cornmeal-crusted eggplant with tomato sauce very good. Stars, however, are the sides. Collard greens melt in your mouth, green beans are lightly sautéed with a light garlicky sauce, super creamy cheese grits, mac and cheese to die for. Look for the seasonal sides. For dessert we had what was billed as banana pudding but was a creme brûlée with a 'Nilla wafer crust, banana slices on top. Delicious, and not your grandma's banana pudding.
Only caution I have is that most dishes were very salty. May be just the Southern cooking style but I drained my water glass (a Mason jar!) a couple of times.
Service was there but unobtrusive, refilling that Mason jar for me just when needed and answering questions. Our waiter was also the person who had taken the order for our gift certificate over the phone and personally thanked us for coming in.
Venue is a vintage storefront on West Broad Street. High tin ceiling, worn floors, long wooden bar. It's possible to get seating in the store windows and people watch on Broad Street.
Yes, do recommend.
The food was delicious and staff was very pleasant .
Absolutely incredible. Great, Southern-inspired dishes that are full of flavor. A short list of entrees is perfect for the indecisive crowd and their mainstay and seasonal sides are all phenomenal. Highly recommend the pimento cheese appetizer.
Great place for dinner. Lunch was meh. Jimmy John's grade foil wrapped hoagie with a bag of chips...
My daughter and wife were skeptical, they said they would play along. I am always in search of real honest from scratch cooking. I found it. Told several people at work today, and they are already planning visits. --Thanks!
There was a new menu since I last was at Comfort- several nice things added. I had two items from the special small plates offered that evening- both delicious.
Always good. I always get the catfish and Mac and cheese and it’s excellent. Very filling! Prices are great for Richmond restaurants.
Comfort is a reliably excellent restaurant with an unpretentious menu.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner for my husband’s birthday. The squash casserole is everything!
Food was very good, maybe priced a bit high for the offerings. Quantity was more than enough. I always finish my plate. Just couldn’t, not that I didn’t want to. Very good selections. For “comfort” fare the green beans should have been cooked more and with ham. I hadn’t been to Comfort in 12 years (I don’t live in Richmond) but it was still as good as the last time
That cornbread! It should be for sale by the loaf! That aside, it was a very good meal, and quite comforting. Pan-seared snapper was delicious, and so were the sides. Banana creme brule was yummy, although the custard could have been warmer, and the crust at the bottom was unnecessary and a bit bland. Stick with the custard and bananas. Overall, a very nice meal in a friendly atmosphere.
Altogether wonderful! Perfect southern food!
While the pork and catfish were good, the chicken wings and collard greens were so salty to be inedible. The vibe is great and yummy cocktails, but I wish there were more attention to the food.
Birthday celebration and it was delicious
The food was overly salty.
The food here is great. Pickled vegetables were wonderful. It was very quiet, had the place to ourselves. We had the roasted chicken, eggplant and catfish dinners with beets, squash casserole, mashed potatoes and collards. Five of us ate for around 125.00 +tip and 2 of us had pre-dinner drinks. It was a nice place, tables are more comfy than booths for those who are not tall.
The servers were great. Attentive without hovering and kind and caring with a good sense of humor, knowledge of menu, and suggestions.
One issue - several of us felt cold in the booth. Again we were the only diners for the first hour so...
