Colori Kitchen will always hold a special place in my heart because it was where I had my first date with my boyfriend. It's cozy and intimate which I prefer over a large impersonal place. I love that you bring your own wine since that not only makes it a good value, but you know what you're drinking and can spurge on a nice bottle. The food is consistently excellent and we've now gone several times. It's perfect for an early dinner before the Taper or Disney Hall since it's a short distance from either.
Been coming here for years. Still love it each time. Of course the standard Italian fare is great, I love the lingcod or specials of the evening. Bring your own bottle of wine (can buy it at the Whole Foods next door). We like to share our bottle.
We love Colori Kitchen. Unpretentious. Fun. Food is great (get the Cioppino). No corkage. Excellent service. Great value. What's not to like? IT'S LOUD. Our prior visits have been early weeknights (Tuesday, Wednesday). While energetic on those nights, it was easy to communicate with our table mates and staff. Latest visit was on Friday and everyone dining there must have been hard of hearing. Because they were all speaking AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS. There are no soft surfaces... ANYWHERE. So, it was QUITE LOUD. By the end of our meal (get the Cioppino) we had to get out of there for fear of PHL (Permanent Hearing Loss). Chicken Marsala was excellent, New York steak was also near perfect. Kale Ceaser was great and not over-dressed. (But, forget all that and get the Cioppino). And unless you're playing left tackle for the Trojans, plan to share it or take some home. All dishes are large enough to be shared by mere mortals.
We have been here several times and the food does not disappoint. While the location is not the most convenient for us, as we live 40 miles away, we try and go as often as possible. We love the food!
Hubby wasn't sure from the outside. Pleasant surprise once we ordered from menu. Great service from our waiter. No alcohol but BYOB w/o corkage fee! All the items we ordered were delicious, pleasantly served & very generous servings, from salad to entree to dessert. Salad so generous that one serving serves two people! We will definitely return again, and next time, we will bring a bottle of wine! This place is diamond in the rough!
Ordered the tagliatelle bolognese and mushroom risotto. Perfect portion for two. Meat entrees appeared delicious and really big! Will have to try next time.
Grilled calamari was so tender and tasty. Pasta dishes were superb! Their specials didn't disappoint. We had spaghetti and meatballs, burrata, pasta with bolognese, their fish special. Their cheesecake was the best I ever had - light as clouds.
The only negative was waiting for my reserved table. Staff we're struggling with a no-show but our server (Chip!) did his best. Food (salmon for one, striped bass for another) very tasty - we substituted broccoli for mashed potatoes, best broccoli I've had.
It's very noisy, but that's part of the price you pay for being in such a lively spot.
I'll be back!
Love this place!
I've tried everything at this point and the food is always great with an amazing wait staff.
Is it possible the main ingredient in my risotto was canned cream of mushroom soup? That this question even occurred to me is a problem.
Flawless as usual. The food in addition to our waiter is one of the reasons I continue to introduce friends to Colori.
Their pasta is amazing. It's a great little restaurant, and I go there every time I visit downtown LA.
The food is just so good. The grilled calamari is a must have. It is BYOB too...can't beat it.
Great food and service. Loved the grilled vegetables. Bring your own wine.
Had a great time. The prices were fair, the service was solid, and the food was fantastic. Will be back again as soon as I can, and I've already spread the word to several friends!
We had the most wonderful meal at Colori Kitchen the other night, just a plain old Wednesday. Started with the calamari appetizer - I don't think I've ever had such perfectly prepared and tasty squid, you could cut it with a fork. I had ricotta and spinach ravioli, the mister had tagliatelle with a meat sauce. It was all absolutely delicious - flavorful, never heavy, portions just perfect. We finished up with tiramisu, which was heavenly.
The place was pleasantly busy while we were there, but I've been told that it gets quite busy and there may be waits for a table on weekend evenings. Though we didn't have to wait, I am quite sure that I would if I had to - and happily - the dinner was very much worth it!
Best service I have received in a very long time. Amazing food. Calamari app was the best and so was the lasagnia! I love that you can bring your own wine too. Great prices!!!
The food was great along with the service and all of the people who work there. I had the carparcio and was great. I had the filet of sole, two people had chicken Marsala and one had the ravioli and said it was the best he ever had. The Italian cheesecake is a one of a kind and the cannoli was "give me another one please. .
Eat there before its to busy to get a reservation. We all LOVED IT
I live downtown and Colori Kitchen is just down the street. I'm rather partial to downtown and this didn't disappoint. We had a lovely time at this smallish place. There is no pretension, the food is very good and reasonably priced for downtown, and the ambience is quaint and the service is good. Due to the high ceilings, the noise level is a bit high, but not intolerable. The place is very good for a date, or a special occasion or if you just want a basically nice place to go out to eat at. Bring your own wine, they apparently have no liquor license, and the waiter will open your bottle for free. I will definitely go there again; I'm thinking of bringing my brother and his wife from Orange County here so they have a good taste of my neighborhood.
Fantastic food. Love the B.Y.O.B.. The staff is always friendly . The best Italian cheescake I have ever had.
We selected Colori based on positive reviews we found on the Internet. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations. The staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered the chicken Marsala and the pasta bolognese. The chicken Marsala was tough (it should have been sliced thinner). The vegetables were too al dente. The bolognese was average, although the home made pasta was so thick that it was chewy. The sauce was tasty. Overall not worth the price. For those concerned about surroundings, the neighborhood was not the best.
First time at the restaurant and it was during dineLA week. Was there with a friend who is an executive chef at a notable restaurant and she commented on the exquisitely prepared food. I agreed. The service was also very attentive and appreciated.
Really enjoyed my ravioli; I picked this spot because of its participation in Dine LA. Unfortunately the vegan option I saw online was nowhere to be found in the restaurant itself (I saw a vegan penne pasta with veggies option; the only vegan option, which was not part of Dine LA, was risotto). I'm not vegan but I wanted the option for a healthy night out.
The restaurant is too noisy and it is almost impossible to hear your guest, partner or mate. We arrived at 6.00PM Saturday, and immediately upon crossing the threshold I realized I was in the wrong place compared to the photos on YELP, or Open Table . Later, I was told that they have two location. The place looks somewhat dumpy, unattractive, and often shabby. This place needs a serious facelift!!
As for the food, my appetizer was a tasty Caesar salad with crisp green, and thin slices of Parmesan cheese. My mate had the Caprese Salad which looked good, and was qualified as such by her. A basket of excellent italian bread was greatly welcomed before the appetizers; unfortunately, a tasteless light green dip was provide which could have been peas, avocado, lima beans. Dreadful stuff , please bring out the squares of butter and let me worry about my clogged arteries.
For entries, I choose, the Tagliatelle with tomato flavored meat sauce. The noodles were al dente perfect and were delicious. I thought the Angus beef a bit dry, but overall a worthy dish. My lady friend was less fortunate, she ordered the Lasagna. She picked at it which is a bad sign. She happily gave me a quarter portion, and I immediately understood her disappointment. The noodles were some cheap store bought product which looked saturated with sauce and a clear indication of poor preparation and ingredients. She also noted there was very little ricotto cheese and a surprisingly helping of bread crumb filling. The restaurant has no liquor license which reduces a diner's happy factor. We decided di to pass on dessert mainly because the noise level was reaching a sold out Dodger Stadium. level In addition, the lack of ambiance , and terrible lighting chased us out.
OK, but I rather would go to Maggiano's for good Italian food
After talking with some locals and reading several online reviews, we were up in the air about going here. But I am glad we did. Yes, the place isn't in the greatest neighborhood. Yes, the place has some rules that some people don't like. But our experience was incident-free. The hostess was super nice, our waiter was fantastic from start to finish and the food was awesome.
The wait staff here is friendly and charming. The food is excellent, with a diverse menu that can feed anyone from vegans to paleo types. And every dish is so flavorful. There's a reason we come here often!
The food is delicious and offers a diversity of Italian dishes, with everything from traditional pasta dishes to things like grilled branzino and cioppino. If they have their burrata on the menu you MUST get it - it's absolutely delicious, though not for the calorie counter. Their bread is great, the bean dip they serve with it is wonderful. And the staff is constantly friendly and warm. I went here twice in one weekend for a reason!
My wife and I are from San Diego and we were in la for the day. Where do we go for a GREAT dinner?
Our "go to spot" where the food and service are ALWAYS on point. Colori Kitchen. As always we're promptly seated, thanks to our reservation from Open Table. Food was delicious as always with great service as well. Remember you can bring your own wine and there is no corkage fee!! This place is such a gem and never ceases to meet our expectations!! ENJOY!!
The food was great like my mom made it
The server is a great guy he makes you feel like family, BUT the bus boy came to the table several times to remove stuff then the Mgr politely ask us to leave because there were people waiting, And I Thought She Was RUDE you just don't kick people out because someone else is waiting, Eat, Drink Love....
Some of the most authentic Italian food I've had in LA!
This is a downtown hidden gem! The food and service were excellent. There are only a few tables so make a reservation and be prepared for a noisy room! Enjoy!
Colori is our favorite go to place before any downtown event. The place is packed and friendly and the food is very good. The chef is always coming up with great off the menu specials. Saturday nights Halibut was wonderful. Super casual and the prices are right. Bring your own wine and no corkage fee. Make a reservation for 6:00 and you will make any event at the music center or Stapels.
Actually walked by without recognizing even though guided by GPS. Glad we found it. Excellent service and good value for food.
Once again Colori rose to my expectation and the staff delivered the best home cooked professional grade food to our table. I took a friend and first timer who raved about Mr C's in Beverly Hills and another italian spot in Sherman Oaks.....and then wham.....suddenly she fell quiet except for the munching noises she made as she devoured her chicken parmigiana and the tasty Calamari house special in lemon sauce. Needless to say the meal and our evening was spot on....we walked over to Louis Botega for comparison....ambiance wise....so the verdict was NONE. I am 100% satisfied with everything that separates these two downtown Italian style eateries. But obviously .....both deserve attention......my order of preference would be..... Louis Botega , BUT only if Colori was fully booked.
I have loved Colori Kitchen for many years now. If there could exit a dive Italian restaurant, this would be it. I use "dive" in a very complementary way - BTW!
It has always been packed, with reservations hard to get Thursday through Sunday. This Thursday night was not the case. As I exited the Harbor freeway at 6th street going east to get to Colori, I thought I was in New York City. The streets were very busy as were all of the restaurants.
Young millennia’s drinking and eating and spending their money at some trendy and some not so trendy restaurants. Colori was almost empty. The food was still great as was the "dive" ambiance.
It sorely needs alcohol. The missing link all of the downtown gentrified young folk want in an establishment. I hope it gets a license for at least wine and beer. I would be sad if Colori Kitchen ever closed its doors due to this fact. It certainly would not be because of the delicious food!
The staff was very attentive and friendly. They were happy to describe anything on the menu and give suggestions. The food was also very good. The fish and calamari that we had were excellent.
Have been coming to Colori for years and it's amazing too see how far the neighborhood has come. I miss the days when basically the whole street was shuttered and no one would venture there - it made getting a table so much easier. But, I am happy to share this place with others. There are countless Italian restaurants in DTLA that may appear "fancier" or more "chic," but Colori is special to me because of the homestyle cooking and the always gracious service.
Was expecting a little more during Dine LA. However, it still looked crowded as usual. I expected a different taste this time around but I think it was more my taste palette that didn't match up with Colori's that night. Good stuff regardless.
Delicious food. Great value. Great service. Great vibe and energy .
Can't wait to go back!
Food was great and overall experience was nice. Would recommend.
