We always love this place. Great food, service and atmosphere and we LOVE the bread basket!
A busy restaurant with good food, it very noisy. Staff very good
Great service, nice atmosphere, we had a big group, and they accommodated us well.
Charming colonial ambience, delicious food generously portioned.
The Colonial Inn is an old standby for me for a special lunch or dinner. I like the formality of the big dining room; however it was only outdoors or the smaller casual dining room when I was there on Tuesday. Outdoors looked lovely, but the weather was too hot, so we were seated in the casual room which is a bit noisy and has little ambiance. The food, as always, was well prepared and delicious. The service was great - our waiter was very attentive. If you are vacationing in the area or just want a place for a leisurely meal, the Colonial Inn is a good place to go.
Lovely experience as always.
The staff at the Colonial Inn are always gracious & helpful. I’ve heard that they are understaffed but I honestly didn’t see any of that, so I’m certain they are working EXTRA HARD behind the scenes to make everything go right!!
We totally enjoyed our experience, and the food was great! Kellie, our server, was so kind about our questions about ghostly encounters. Will definitely go back!
The Colonial inn was specifically chosen to honor a friend who had recently passed away. For this reason we made reservations for Merchant’s Row near a window where it would be quiet and give our small group a chance to honor our missing colleague. Just hours before our reservations were confirmed. Upon checking in I was shocked to learn that Merchant’s Row was closed and hadn't been available for months because of COVID. Why were we not informed before this? The person delivering this message was terse and told me we’d need to sit in the Liberty Room. Friends were traveling for over an hour for this meeting, one of whom had severe hearing issues. The noise level in the dining area was very loud and uncomfortable and this woman struggled throughout the meal to participate in our conversation. I found this more than irritating and unacceptable given what I thought was the high caliber of the Colonial Inn. Sadly, we have decided not to meet there again next year.
Al fresco dining and they have never let me down.
Incredibly loud noisy dining room. Service was OK but could have been a little faster. Now for the food--it was terrible. For 2 simple dishes like chicken pot pie and Yankee pot roast it is mind boggling how they could have been so bad. The pot roast was tough and chewy--this type of meat slow cooked should be tender and falling apart!! Left 2 of the 3 pieces to be returned to the kitchen!!! The pot pie was more like a heavy soup drowning in liquid while the meat and the few vegetables were basically bland and needed heavy salt and pepper to improve taste. Left half in the bread bowl.
The price on the wine was rather high compared to other restaurants for the same brand and type. Cannot recommend this restaurant.
Sat outside on the porch and was well taken care of by our server.
Our server was great and the food was delicious. Portions were so large! We barely had room for dessert but didn’t want to skip it because it’s always so good!
Great place for lunch. We had lobster rolls and truffle fries. Truffle fries particularly good.
Good place for breakfast. Quality of other food is marginal.
Food was good but not hot when served. Service was good & friendly. Ambiance always pleasant & peaceful.
My wife and I went here for the first time and sat in the bar area. The bartender was our server and was very responsive to our needs. He was very attentive and always asking if we needed anything. Not overly hovering....just the right amount. The food was very good and nice and hot. I had the pot roast and it was better than my own mothers home cooking (but dont tell my mom) My wife had the baked scrod and said it was delicious and serving size was also very good. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate with raspberry coulombs. The piece could have been just a little bigger but the taste was very good. We also had 2 glasses of Pinot Grigio which was perfectly chilled and the taste was one of the better Pinot Grigio I have had. It was on the house list but next time will get the bottle, (it was that fruity, smooth and full of aroma) It was by the Slaveda Vineyards (I think I got it right) You won't be disappointed....We will definitely sit outside on our next trip because it is that nice of a restaurant.
The swordfish was perfectly cooked and delicious, the Sancerre perfect. The dining room we were in emptied out about half way through the meal, so it felt like private dining.
Great location, the the food, service and weather combined to provide us with a fabulous afternoon dining experience. Highly recommended.
Wonderful evening, delicious food, and friendly staff. We sat outside and listened to the Minutemen Fife & Drum group that was playing on the green across the street.
High prices and average food . Nose level was high. Our table was at the door to the small room. Due to funeral collation and tourist business it was busy. The service was great!!
I made a reservation in the Merchant Row restaurant and when we got there, we were told that it was closed that night. We were seated in another restaurant that smelled badly.
Yes, I do recommend the Merchant Row restaurant, which is our favorite restaurant, but this time it didn’t work out.
We were very disappointed that we were unable to eat at Merchants Row and had to eat instead at the Inn’s other informal restaurant where we ate breakfast. We were excited about staying at the Colonial Inn and had made a reservation at the Merchants Row Restaurant because we had read it was so charming. On the Saturday night we were there when we came down for dinner, we were told that the Merchant Row Restaurant wasn’t going to be open that night and that we would have to dine in their very informal restaurant. Although we were told that it was the same menu, the atmosphere was totally different and we didn’t really enjoy the experience. Hopefully they will be sure that the charming restaurant will be open on Saturday nights in the summer high tourist season, and if not, clients should be notified prior to arriving for dinner.
My res was for Merchant's Row. It was confirmed on Open Table. We arrived and were told that the restaurant was closed. We were seated in Liberty. Definitely not the same experience. The food was very good but the ambience was not. Why didn't the restaurant notify me aforehand that the dining room was closed??
Nice old inn. Good service and good food selection.
Great sweet potato fries
Charming location and setting, but unfortunately the service, the ambiance and the food are not at the same level. I have been to the Colonial Inn on and off for over 30 years and while there was a short period during which both the quality of the food and the service was better, it keeps disappointing.
We had a wonderful evening and every aspect of the night was perfect. Our server, Bill, was outstanding and allowed us plenty of time to talk and did not rush us at all. We met 2 wonderful couples and spoke with them and we all had a great time and we are all looking forward to the restaurant opening again and meeting our new friends
Great food and wonderful service. I kind of miss the days when they had white linen and a bit more of an upscale atmosphere, but still a lovely place. Wonderful atmosphere in the old inn, don't miss a stop in the old tavern room.
Waitperson Bill was terrific. Busy as heck but never pressured, personable and friendly. He surely needs a raise!
Burgers are scrumptious.
Service is great.
Atmosphere is historical
We had an outstanding evening at Merchants Row. The service was spectacular and our server, Sheila, had the perfect sense of timing and understood how important the date was to me. The food was perfectly cooked and nice and hot when served. We had such a great evening, we are going back next Sunday !!
We had a delightful time here. Food was great, the service was awesome and super friendly.
I have been here twice and each time the service and food was excellent. It is a historic colonial days style restaurant. Ambiance very nice.
I've eaten here twice. The first time the experience was excellent, food and service-wise. This time not so much. It seemed there was only 1 elderly waiter for all of the tables in the room in which we were seated. It was at least 30 minutes from the time we sat until he came to take our order, and at that point he asked for the drinks and the food all together. He was unclear about the bar menu, and returned a few minutes later to confirm our food order, as he had not written one of our meals down. The food came out fast enough after that, but my prime rib had been pan seared (odd), was chewy, flavorless, and the popover was just this side of burnt. My husband's pot pie was delicious, and our past experience was very good. We will give this another try.
It was a crowded brunch so it was a bit noisy and it took a few minutes before our waitress was able to get to us for drinks. Other than that, it was outstanding. There was so many choices, it was difficult to not over indulge! Everything was wonderful. My only wish... was that they would put some of the Indian Pudding on the dessert bar!! The waitstaff was very attentive and when we were done, we were not rushed out at all.
Meats were cold, tea was lukewarm, bagels and cream cheese gone, bread pudding gone. Price per person rose from $35 to $36.95. Service attentiveness was lacking. We have been going to this Sunday brunch for years. Unsure that we will return.
