Everything about Colleen’s was great except for the noise level. Apparently it was kids-eat-free day so screaming children throughout. We made the mistake of going there to meet our sister’s new boyfriend because we couldn’t hear anything, and it was hard to talk and get to know him.
It took over 40 minutes to get our brunch out on a Sunday morning. They took it off of our bill but even when I did get my “breakfast platter” I was unimpressed. For $12 I received a mostly empty plate. My boyfriends $15 chicken and waffles were astounding and the portion matched the price.
When I order a breakfast platter, I assume I’ll be getting a platter of food. I paid $3 to add toast to this meal so I could dip some bread in my fried eggs but the bread was sweetened and filled with poppy seeds.
I’ll go back but I’ll be getting the chicken and waffles. Serious plate envy.
The management was kind and accommodating to our obviously delayed breakfast and did not charge us. This is why I will go back. The manager was so lovely.
I live in Chicago and have had better soul/ comfort food back home. I had the shrimp and grits... the shrimp were pulverized and the grits weren’t seasoned at all... it felt as if I was eating cream of wheat.. the only thing this restaurant can hang their hat on was the chicken pot pie and that wasn’t exceptional. Overall I give it a 2 out of 5. Overpriced and not what I expected from Austin comfort food.
We love this restaurant. We always enjoy the food, the staff is great! A little on the loud-side, but we're happy to deal with that for fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and some really yummy deviled eggs!
Nice restaurant with super friendly and attentive staff. Fried chicken served family style was enough for 4 so the three of us had leftovers, and was very good. French 75 cocktails were very tasty. Mashed were good too. Only negatives were way too much salt on the fried zucchini and way too much pepper on the haricot verts.
This place was amazing! I had seen some negative reviews but heard great things so when I walked by it a few days earlier I knew I wanted to try it. At first I was a little shocked my the size of the menu, it wasn’t as robust as you expect from some restaurants but after ordering the food and tasting it I can see why! They don’t need a lot of options, EVERYTHING from the appetizers to the main course and the drinks were amazing! I can’t wait to go back! Great place for families, individuals or in my case a date! I highly recommend it!
Oh and there was so much left over we brought them home and they were just as good the next day! That never happens!
Only for lunch, none of our entree's were anything to write home about. . .
Fantastic spot for brunch. Staff members are attentive, professional and courteous.
The food at Colleen's is very good and unique, with a good wine list and excellent brewed iced tea. Their specialty is a delicious, moist friend chicken. The fried chicken with mashed potatoes, green beans and a biscuit, or the caesar salad with friend chicken are both great options. The service is also great. It can be a little loud, but not too bad. We also enjoy the cool old movies they show above the bar.
What a lovely place! It was the special place to celebrate and Brian our waiter was fantastic.
The Chicken Biscuit was pretty impressive, soup was ok, the dessert (a mousse pie and banana pudding) was disappointing and the High Cotton Cocktail was too strong to be enjoyable.
Overall an ok experience, so I would not go out of my way to recommend to a friend.
We had an overall terrific experience visiting Colleen's Kitchen for the first time, for Sunday brunch. Menu favorites: the Little Biscuits (esp. the fried green tomato), fried okra, chicken & waffles, Colleen's punch. Love the decor and atmosphere, noise level in a packed restaurant was bustling but we could still hold a conversation and hear each other fine. Service was mostly very attentive, wait time for food was a little longer than expected but not a big deal. Nice # of choices on brunch kids' menu, as well. Will definitely be back!
Place was perfect for brunch, but i think they may have been a bit understaffed - a chronic problem in a overemployed city like Austin.
Long wait for food after we ordered. They forgot about our bloody Mary’s, but then gave them to us free when we brought it to their attention. Expensive, mediocre food. The pie tasted like it had been stored in a bad fridge. Would not recommend. Too bad because the interior looked nice.
Exceptional food and service. A true gem and a must go soon spot. We will be back to try more of the farm to table menu!
Service was only factor that was not the best. Hopefully was a one off. Still a great place!
Got there just before happy hour ended but was able to order some drinks and bar snacks/starters. The potato chips with blue cheese were fantastic as was the pimento cheese spread. The pickled vegetables were a bit too vinegary to enjoy. We then split their shrimp and grits and were not disappointment. A great stop and meal before hitting a movie next door!
Great food as usual. Loved the doughboys and my wife liked the sunday punch.
The food is mediocre. It was ok the last time I went, but it seems to decline every time I go.
Party of 7. Everyone's food tasted great. We tried the shrimp n grits, redfish, burger, pot pie, succotash and a couple of the little biscuits. The pot pie is an extremely small portion for the price. It doesn't cost much to make a chicken pot pie. The serving size is fine, but it definitely is way overpriced at $15. Our server did as little as she possibly could outside of taking our order and getting our initial waters poured. We had to track her down to get any of our other drink orders filled and to get refills on the water. Never saw her again after our food was served until we tracked her down (again) to pay our bill. Would probably eat here again, though, because the food was very good.
Really cute place. I ordered the shrimp and grits. It was delicious however, the shrimp were a little too spicy and without the grits, they would have been overwhelming. Also, my friend ordered the chicken pot pie - yummy, but veggies were undercooked. Banana pudding was fabulous! Overall, food was yummy. Will go again.
The cocktails, food and service were all great. The biscuits are to die for and the fried chicken was fantastic. My wife and I agreed that may be one of the best banana puddings we have ever had. Great job all around.
Our only constructive feedback: we sat at a 4-top table in the middle of the room and those tables are tiny. Our drinks and appts/meal barely fit just for the two of us.
We had poor service where we were left waiting for long stretches of time trying to get a drink menu, place a drink order, place an appetizer order, place our dinner order. When our food arrived we were very surprised at the small size of the portions. The cut of fish was no more than 5 bites. The catfish appetizer came with 5 or 6 small pieces, and the pot pie was small and came with no sides. Worse than the portion size was the quality of the food. To call this food southern is a stretch. Overall very disappointing.
Food was great! The place was busy and loud but we still had fun
The food was mediocre. Lacked flavor. The service wad good and the people were lovely. Overpriced
Loved Colleen's Kitchen. I've eaten there for a quiet meal, but was impressed by the fine dining aspect!
Great food, great service. Definitely recommend. The house chips were especially delicious.
Happy Hour has drink and food discounts making it very reasonable in price. The food is very good and they have specialty cocktails that are very good as well.
Reddish portion seemed very small! Server was great and they brought wonderful cookies for Father’s Day
Punch bowl is so fun! Very reasonably priced!
I love just about everything about this place, but the exceptional friendly service is what keeps me coming back and bringing new friends.
Great place for brunch and takes reservations! Parking in the area is a little difficult even with the parking garage.
The owner greeted us at the door! Every detail was amazing from the teacup drinks of strong punch to quirky decorations of the past. Bright and clean and super cute. The food was amazing! Everything we ordered was memorable. We really enjoyed our time and we can’t wait to go back!
The weather was perfect so we ate outside, overlooking Mueller area. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic and we shared the fried chicken platter for4. The food was excellent and the portions large enough to share. The mashed potatoes were also good. We sat and talked for 2 hours and never felt rushed at all. We will definitely return to this great find!
Overall, we had an excellent time at Colleen's Kitchen. The food and drinks and server were great. They sat us by the kitchen, which was fine, except that two servers dropped dishes right next to us and one of these accidents sent glass flying into my mother's lap. My mom was fine, and they were very apologetic about it and I don't think it would have happened had the servers not felt rushed -- It was UT graduation weekend, after all.
Fun dinner with family. The fried chicken and biscuits are so delicious they are worth the occasional calorie splurge. Friendly, helpful service. And happy hour pricing on drinks and appetizers also a plus.
Love the decor and the fact that it's a local business that uses real food. It has a good bar and good menu. In my experience, the preparation of the food has been uneven. Mashed potatoes were somewhat glue-y the other night, for example, but the biscuits are always good.
Outstanding food and service in a relaxed atmosphere!!
Food and drinks were absolutely fantastic! Can't wait to go back for that. The service was sort of slow, but not neglectful. It was just like they weren't really interested in doing things in a timely manner. We will go back though. :)
Fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits - how much more Southern comfort food can you get? All wonderful, with fantastic service. Dessert was disappointing - a root beer cheesecake/pie. Odd taste, rubbery crust and the root beer foam on top was just weird.
