The complex flavors from the kitchen are complimented with creative drinks, selected Tequilas, beer and wine from the bar. The decor matches that found in Mexico City's cantinas in the early 1900's. Bienvenido a Colibri Mexican Bistro y buen provecho! We serve our authentic cuisine in a tapas style so that you can enjoy multiple dishes to share with others. Colibri - Mexican Bistro Ratings and Reviews
I made a reservation at Colibri a day or two before some friends came to town, and hoped to show them a good time with some authentic Mexican food. We arrived on time, and were taken to a table DEEP in the back of the place. They sat us right next to the food preparation area, where the cooks chopped food, banged pots and pans, and otherwise added to this already maddeningly loud area of the restaurant. We soon learned that a small partition next to our table housed the area where the bus boys took the dirty dishes, owing to the persistent CLASH and SMASH of various plates and the ringing sound of silverware dropped into buckets.
It would seem that, in their mad dash to make as much money as possible, Colibri's managers have decided to use each and every square inch of floor space to house tables with paying customers, regardless of how this might affect their dining experience. I couldn't help thinking to myself that we'd been sat at the very worst table in the place, but soon learned that an even WORSE table was nearby. A small table about the size of a monopoly game board was squeezed between us and the booth nearby, with two chairs uncomfortably fitted on either side. Pity the poor souls who get stuck there!
I informed our waiter that we would not be staying if we had to remain at this insane table, and requested that he move us. Apologetically, he explained that they had "many reservations that night." I responded, "Yes, and mine is one of them." He smiled, and said he'd need to check with the Maître d' first. He eventually returned, and sat us in a booth. The noise level continued unabated, but at least we were free from the pain of feeling like part of the help.
Interestingly, as we left the restaurant, I realized that the front of the place was much nicer and quite a bit less noisy. I somehow hadn't noticed this on our way in. I strongly suggest demanding a table in that area if you decide to eat here.
The place itself was good but it's a bit small and narrow. However the service was not that great. They brought us three different types of salsa however they never brought us our chips to accompany the salsa. We then asked our server if we could get some chips, however he never brought them, until he made another round to our table and we asked him again and until then he brought over the chips. Which was kind of late since they had already brought our food.
The food was okay, I have had way better Mexican food at a cheaper price. For the price of each plate I say it's not worth it. They're mostly charging you for the location. than the quality of the food.
Disappointed overall. Food was dry. Expensive, and Margaritas were weak.
Will not be coming back, Service was not good. Took my wife here for a birthday with friends, thought it would be a hotspot next to our hotel. Very disappointed and will not recommend to colleagues and friends..
I have been coming to Consuelos and Colibri for over 10 years. I’ve been in for regular dining, special occasions and just for sangria and snacks. The service has always been great, the restaurant has been clean and the food outstanding. I’m not sure what happened on this last visit but the service was slow and poor, the hostess seemed very confused, the food lacked flavor and the overall experience just kind of sucked. I was shocked. I have alway bragged about how great Colibri is and now I don’t feel comfortable recommending it to anyone. I hope this was just an off day. Unfortunately since I now live in Houston I won’t waste my time to come in again to find out when I’m back in the city.
We enjoyed thoughtfully prepared food - ceviche to start, delicate fresh tortillas with salsa triad, duck mole, carnitas; unfortunately the churros were too heavy, too sweet; dulce de leche ice cream was heavenly, the best part of this dish. Table service was good; we had indicated a special occasion when we booked the reservation and there was zero acknowledgment or apology by staff when we followed up. Hostess actually lied about not having checked us in.
This is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. First discovered it in 2009 and every time I'm in town I come back. Their guacamole is incredible and everything on the menu is top-notch. Especially love the lamb shank, but their mole chicken isn't too bad either ;) I've recommended Colibri to friends visiting San Francisco over the years and the ones that have gone absolutely loved it. My only regret is that I don't get to San Francisco more often.
We had a reservation for six and a reservation for two. We ended up with seven people. We couldn't get through on the phones. When we arrived, I let them know that we had seven people. It was early, 5:30. The hostess crammed seven adults into a booth. When I asked if it was possible to move to a table she said that there weren't any tables. I then pointed out several empty tables. Her response was, "It's your fault for not calling us." Total customer service fail. The waiter was great and the good was great, but this left a bad taste.
We had guacamole, lamb shanks and a Jamaica salad. The g uac was OK, but the shanks were tasteless and the salad inedible. We sat near the kitchen and the noise from the dishwashing was loud enough to be disagreeable. The prices for average to poor Mexican food were daylight robbery - $16 for guac, $27 for a lamb shank.
We will not be back.
expect slow service at times right after the theaters across the street empty out. better have a reservation too - because everybody has a table booked right after the show and everybody gets there at the exact same time. We weren't in any hurry so it worked just fine, but if you're catching a show AFTER the meal, you might want to schedule your reservations 2 hours before you want to walk into the theater.
Food was interesting, different than typical Mexican fare. Service was friendly, but a bit rushed. Location (near theatre) is great. Noise level is incredibly high. Had to lean across table, look directly at each other, and yell to be understood. Suspect that noise problem affected how I felt about other factors.
We have been coming to Colibri for close to 8 years now, and we continue to be impressed! The food is outstanding, drinks divine, and the service is top notch. One of the nicest things we've noticed is that we see the same faces visit after visit: a restaurant with a low staff turn over must be doing something right! On this visit, we were celebrating our anniversary with dinner at Colibri before seeing a show across the street. We realized during the visit that it's been far too long since we've been for brunch, so we will be remedying that within the next few weeks! Best brunch in town!
The evening had great potential! But they blew it! 2/3 of the food was excellent (appetizer and all 4 different entrees). First our drinks order was wrong (salt on 2 margaritas that were requested without salt- we reminded the waiter of this and the drinks returned Very SALTY- we think they just poured the drinks into new glasses and the salty rim followed!) We were SUPPOSED to be celebrating a birthday...got a phone call from Colibri that afternoon confirming the reservation and saying “we will give you a good birthday celebration”! Well THAT never happened! Also 3 entrees arrived but we had to ASK about the 4th and then waited 5 minutes before it arrived!!! By then the other 3 entrees were cold. And then there was their version of the dessert “Bananas Foster”. This should be a warm dessert with ice cream. The bananas were cold and the ice cream was warm!!! After all this and the appalling noise level (we had to shout at each other) we payed the overpriced bill and left!
Great food. As others have reviewed, poor service. It all stated out good with warm tortillas and salsa and our appetizer came quick. Then the hour long wait for food. We could not even find our waitress. She disappeared. Finally she showed up and said the food is on its way. After second time and an hour, she realized the food was ready and at the kitchen counter. Food was great! We loved it, just wish it came 45 minutes earlier. Ambiance was good, but everything's looked beat up. They need to clean and touch things up. Paint was scuffed up all over. Even tiles were missing from the bathroom sink. Go for the food, but only if you are not in a hurry.
