About Colibri - Mexican Bistro
Restaurant Description: Colibri Mexican Bistro features a traditional and diverse Mexican cuisine. The complex flavors from the kitchen are complimented with creative drinks, selected Tequilas, beer and wine from the bar. The decor matches that found in Mexico City's cantinas in the early 1900's. Bienvenido a Colibri Mexican Bistro y buen provecho! We serve our authentic cuisine in a tapas style so that you can enjoy multiple dishes to share with others. Colibri - Mexican Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Really great little restaurant tucked away in San Francisco, the food was excellent in particular the guacamole, the pork tostadas, lamb shank and chicken breast which we tried. Very busy restaurant with a nice vibe and feel to it. The only reason i rated the service down was that the meals came out really fast - we ordered appetizers and were only half way through and the main meals came out. I'd recommend ordering appetizers first then entrees later to avoid this, but overall great food and nice restaurant
Service and drinks were great and the food seemed authentic. But it was VERY warm when we arrived and the guacamole was $16!!! It was large, but too expensive. The waiter could have told us it was not meant for 2 people. But our waiter was friendly and attentive on a busy night. Very loud inside, so don't come for a quite date. Fun with friends atmosphere.
Not a good experience here at all.
First the positive. The guacamole with 3 salsas and chips was delicious and well made with very fresh ingredients.
The negative...after waiting over 20 minutes for our cocktail order to arrive, my friends dry martini with a twist came out instead with olives. He mentioned this to the waiter. The water then returned with a martini (with a twist) faster than was humanly possible to make a martini. Realizing this, my friend asked if the bartender had just removed the olives and replaced them with a twist. The waiter admitted that this was in fact the case. My friend returned the drink only to have the waiter return again stating that now the bartender said she didn't just replace the olives with a twist. One taste and he was quite certain that this was not the case. There was very little effort on the part of the restaurant to make this right so we asked for our check having only had the guacamole and we went to have lunch elsewhere.
We have loved this restaurant for several years, but this time was not at all what we had experienced in past visits. Perhaps it was Sunday night and our reservation was just an hour before they closed, but it was disappointing overall. The fish in my fish tacos did not taste fresh. My friend had the filet mignon but it was not the size or the quality that it had been in the past. Off night? Maybe, but we decided we would try somewhere new for next time.
This was my second time at Colibri. We had friends in from Munich and Southern California. Service and quality of food was excellent. Noise level high, but we were 5 people at a small table, (had to continually ask them to remove empty dishes since table space was limited), so we could hear one another fairly well. But this is not the place for a quiet romantic meal! Vibrant atmosphere. Even after 20 years in the Bay Area (from Houston), I still find prices for Mexican food in SF, quite high. Guess being so close to Union Square bumps up prices even more. I would go back for a special occasion, otherwise I prefer Mission District for quality Mexican/Latin food at much better value.
Great place to get a bite before going to the ACT theatre which is directly across the street. We had the fish tacos and the Panuchos de Cochinita Pibil were tasty with lots of flavor. They also served us freshly made tortillas with incredible sauces. I had their Margarita de la casa which was amazing! And we made it in time for the show!
I unwrapped the napkin on the table to discover to disgustingly dirty cutlery. Behind my fork and spoon we're old lettuce leaves so deeply hacked into the metal that for a minute I doubted whether this was the design of the cutlery. When I called the hostess and showed it to her, she confirmed that was not the design but dirty cutlery and quickly took them away.
It took them an hour to bring a plate of eggs and some ceviche. The ceviche it was marinating in such an overly acidic and astringent mix that it hurt the throat.
Additionally, the service was slow and inattentive. Also, the management did not seem very eager to make it up to us.
We will never return and could not recommend this business to anyone.
Looking around, it is obvious that this is a joint for tourists who may think this is the ultimate Mexican bistro in the city.
We got right in with our reservation. We only had to wait for our server for a few minutes. He took our drink order then came back because I was unsure what I wanted to order. When he took our food order after bringing back our drinks he was zero help. I was Unfamiliar with the menu and some of the items on the menu.... but he did not give me any suggestions. He left, still without bringing us our chips ( homemade tortillas ) and salsa. I tried for 5 minutes to get his attention with no luck. Finally, after sitting there for 20 minutes I flagged down the hostess and she was able to get it for me!
Our waiter was subpar. But the food was yummy and our cocktails... a jalapeño and a ginger margarita were amazing!!
Margaritas were tasty as well as their carnitas. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of the veggie chile relleno, wished he would've gotten it with the carnitas. Along with fresh chips they give you 3 different salsas ranging from sweet to spicy. Oh and their churros are AMAZING!!
Food is good, ambiance is great, decor and service are great. Amazing endless tortillas and salsa! However, their portion sizes have become an insult. $16 Guacamole comes in a huge stone bowl that houses a shallow plastic plate and they've been filling it less and less full.
Colibri was an absolute delight! I noted on our reservation that it was our anniversary and we were overwhelmed to have three separate employees tell us happy anniversary! And, they brought us a glass of champagne to celebrate. The server was very attentive and the food was delicious. We had the mole poblano and the pechuga rellena de huitlacoche - fabulous! The guacamole was also amazing. And we had their macho margaritas, very tasty and spicy. I have already recommended Colibri to two of my coworkers and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone living in or traveling to San Francisco!
