De la part des éditeur·rice·s d'OpenTable: Fine-dining vet Jordan Smith has plenty of fun with the menu at his French-ish Ferndale spot that the Detroit Free Press named 2024's best new restaurant. The sleek wooden interiors make it feel very upscale, but Coeur is totally unpretentious and laidback. Expect a seasonal menu of dishes like a branzino curry with trumpet mushroom and next-level desserts from pastry chef Carla Spicuzzi like a swanky take on a Choco Taco.     We dined at Coeur on Saturday night, eager to try a newer restaurant. Overall, the food was pretty good, but certain details held the experience back from being truly memorable. We started with multiple appetizers, expecting them to be spaced out (that is what the waitress told us), but instead, they all arrived at the same time; followed by a substantial lull waiting on the main course, which disrupted the pacing of the meal. The garlic bread was decent, and the sauce it came with added a nice touch. The rutabaga tempura had good flavor, but the rutabaga itself was unexpectedly hard; a softer texture would have been preferable. For the main course, I ordered the steak medium rare, but it arrived rare. They attempted to fix it, but even after the second attempt, it remained undercooked. Additionally, the steak itself lacked depth of flavor (they did not seem to season the steak with salt and pepper before cooking), and the chimichurri sauce—meant to enhance it—was buried under the vegetables rather than presented alongside or on top of it. My wife ordered the braised short rib, which tasted fine, but the accompanying polenta was quite dry. The attention to detail was lacking in other areas: our table was wobbly, though the staff quickly provided a wedge to stabilize it after we asked. The setup of the tables was odd. We were at a two top that felt like it was in the middle of an aisle. While the appetizer plates were cleared, there was no effort to wipe the table afterward. Many have noted that something felt off about the experience, and I would agree—though it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where it falls short beyond the finer details. Everyone on staff was polite and fairly attentive, but given the price point and location, the level of service and refinement did not meet expectations. For the cost, Coeur was simply okay. While there were enjoyable aspects, I wouldn't be in a hurry to return.

    We did the a la carte menu and we had the burger and the cod. Every bite was outstanding. We can’t wait till our next visit.

    Great staff: greeted by Katie - great first impression of the restaurant. Kimberly, server was engaging when the time was right and invisible when we didn’t need her (almost magic). Lena, the somm, knows her stuff - she treats every bottle of wine like a $7,000 DRC - very flattering. Food was off the charts: had beignets, tempura rudebega, mussels, ravioli, coulotte steak….wow. Probably best bottle wine list in the Detroit area - real eclectic “food” wines, not the standard “Birmingham, Caymus stuff”.

    The food was delicious here and the service was great! Everything we tried was flavorful and fresh. We will definitely be back to try whatever we were too full to try! The chicken, burger and short rib were all yummy. The drinks were fun and tasty too. Only thing I wish they served Spanish coffee cocktail.

    Delicious!! We did the blind tasting and were pleasantly surprised at every course. I did the wine pairing and loved every selection. As much as we devoured our own meals, we looked on enviously at the bread and salads and other menu items that surrounded us. Can’t wait to go back for round 2!!
