Our waitress (who said she only works on Fridays) spent the entire meal laughing at me each time I made a request. She seemed very uncomfortable and said that she could not make any of the drinks on the menu (Except for the Gin and Tonic.) When her friend came into the restaurant for a visit (not sure who the visitor was, she was talking loudly behind a curtain with our waitress though as we ate a few feet away), she spent at least 5 minutes talking rather than bringing me my drink I had ordered prior. When we expressed our displeasure with the service , she argued with me and said that I was a rude customer. Never been treated so poorly by a waitress in my life. Food was OK, but for the price, you could get much better service going to a less costly alternative such as the Burgundy Lion (or even a chain like the Keg!)
It was a quiet evening, few customers. Food was ok. Service was acceptable, but inconsistent. The biggest disappointment was that before I started ordering, I asked the staff to make sure that I could redeem a promo coupon. The waitress said she was going to check with the manager, who then refused to honor it, but only at the end of the meal as he brought us the bill. I find that extremely unprofessional, and did not make any effort to accommodate a new client.
Quiet mid-week evening dinner. Quiet because the restaurant was mainly empty, and my dining companion ended up missing dinner due to a meeting running long. I stayed because I was already seated, and I was hungry! The bread plate had toasted "sticks" of black bread, and not-so-fresh olive bread, with a little dish of creamy chive spread. Started with the appetizer of foie gras au torchon with apple chutney and brioche. Delicious! Unfortunately, I did not enjoy my "main" of the Warm goat cheese salad with raspberry Vinaigrette and roasted pine nuts. It was more of a composed plate instead of a salad. The small mound of greens was fresh and tasty, but the cheese was plated as a cake melting atop a toasted slice of black bread (like an open-faced sandwich) and had a weird, plastic taste I could not stomach. The plate included some julienned apple garnish on the side but that could not save the cheese. Since I was still hungry, I asked for the side of a small casserole of cooked vegetables - which was very simple but tasty. I decided against dessert (I have to really be in the mood to enjoy dessert) and left somewhat hungry. Service was efficent, and I did appreciate that the waiter asked me about how I (did not) enjoy the goat cheese salad when he saw all I finished was the greens and the apple. He surprised me by not charging for the vegatble casserole, whoch was an appreciated touch.
The ambiance was really nice, great for a date. The food how ever was just ok. I decided to go with the discovery menu which is four surprise meals. The first meal which was foie gras was very tasty. The second meal was octopus risotto and the octopus was over done, very tough. The third meal was beef tartare which was good and the dessert was good too. Overall the food was not memorable. Nice place good service but would not return.
Our first night in Montreal we were lucky enough to find this neighborhood gem through Open Table. There is no mistaking this menu for anything you would likely find in the States without some major searching. I am not very well versed in the intricacies of French cuisine, but I found the offerings at Code Ambience to be quite intriguing and certainly tantalizing. We shared the pork terrine and the duck foie gras appetizer. The pork terrine was a fine, but paled in comparison the duck foie gras, which was prepared a la "Torchon", which I understand to be a painstaking process in which the liver is boiled in cheese cloth in stages over the course of several days, in this case with a blend of secret spices and served with apple chutney and slivers of croissant. Presentation was very pleasing and the flavors were fabulous. The rest of the meal remained at this level throughout. A fine wine list to accompany a menu of wonderfully creative French dishes. A definite yes.
The evening did not start well since the restaurant had no record of our Open Table reservation (suggest that you call the restaurant to confirm!). Nevertheless, and although the restaurant was full, the staff found us a small table (for 2 - we were 3) and endeavoured, throughout the evening, to make us feel welcome. On offer was a special, limited, dinner menu (three courses, $31 per person) with only one vegetarian option (fish). Overall, the service was excellent, the food good although not outstanding (the tuna was overcooked for our taste and we were not asked how we wanted it prepared), and with a good selection of wines. Ambiance and noise level very acceptable for a relaxed evening.
Tartare lamb excellent ( not often in other restaurant )
The other tartare were very good too !
Pork stew very tender
Very very good wine list !
Server , sommelier ( same person ) was excellent , answer all our questions patiently and very knowledgable about his food and wine .
We stumbled upon this understated "boite" partway between the two ends of the "hip strip" that Notre Dame West has become and have become regulars, thanks to the elegance of the French-inflected cuisine and the fresh local ingredients. On our last visit, the catch of the day was eperlan -- smelts -- from the St. Lawrence River, beautifully prepared. The scallops from the Iles de la Madeleine and the duck are also reliably delicious.
All dishes were excellent beautifully presented and sized for a multi course meal. When it was time to order dessert everyone selected a dish. the atmosphere was relaxed and quiet and the service was excellent. Not everyone in our group was comfortable in French and we spoke English between ourselves. The waiters switchEd back and forth between languages and we were all given English menus. The message was we are here to make every effort to ensure our customers are comfortable and at ease. Great food great service in a restaurant where you do not have to shout at your companion to be heard. We had a relaxing wonderfully evening and will return.
CA is a small, quiet, stylish space with an excellent kitchen and Maitresse D' who is on top of everything. Bistro fare with a bit more "haut cuisine" than most. Portion sizes are perfect. Easy street parking nearby. A great place to go with foodie friends with whom you want to have a conversation, because the noise level is appropriate for dining, and is not a night-club scene.
I have also had lunch and they do a good table d'hote if you are looking for a full meal/business lunch.
Excellent contemporary French food and very attentive, personal service from the owner. We were very well taken care of and he made the evening feel very special. Modern interior design with a lovely bar area where we enjoyed excellent cocktails before dinner. All In all a great evening. Will definitely be returning.
