My husband and I were staying at the Berkeley, and on this snowy evening, we decided to have dinner in-house at the Cobblestone. It was pretty much what we expected from the reviews. It’s basically an American bistro. The menu is not expansive, but innovative, and the flavors were very nice.
We were a bit disappointed at the choice of bourbons for our old fashioneds, but the drinks were made well with Eagle Rare.
We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer which were very good, but could’ve used some creme fresh to balance the acidity.
I had the tea teriyaki salmon, and it was quite nice, although I doubt it was wild-caught. My husband enjoyed the dirty bird with no complaints. For dessert we shared the pumpkin praline cheesecake, and it was very rich and a nice finish to our meal.
The restaurant has a pub/bistro ambiance, and was perfect for a quiet date night.
Food was adequate. The Berkeley Crab Bisque, a favorite in the past, was too thick, lacking in Sherry & room temperature.
The Cherry Pepsi Short Ribs had a nice flavor but was not cooked long enough to be fall off the bone tender.
We did not order dessert.
Staff was prompt & friendly.
Lighting was awful, all overhead lighting. Try some table lighting or candles.
The date night special was a decent value: shared appetizer, 2 entrees, shared dessert, and a bottle of wine for $75. The salmon and bread pudding were delicious. Our server, Will, was pleasant and down to earth. He made us feel welcome. Good atmosphere with jazz on the overhead sound system. The woodwork in the restaurant was clean and cobweb free. No complaints.
I had wanted to take my aunt out for a birthday lunch. I wanted to take her somewhere very nice where neither of us of been before. Well that was a mistake. Several years ago I had often heard good things about the Berkeley; I just never had been. Perhaps a lot had changed in that time.
The decor was boring and sterile, not the least bit elegant or interesting. The waiter suggested the crabcakes so we ordered the crabcake sandwich. It was mediocre. We both had coffee. I might as well have been at Cracker Barrel. Coffee was weak. We did have Keylime pie and that was the highlight.
Lastly, toward the end of our meal it became uncomfortably warm and humid in the restaurant. We asked the waiter if something happened to the air-conditioning. After checking he realized the valet had left the front door propped open which is very near the dining area. That just added to our less than impressive dining experience.
The manager did stop over and was very gracious and offered dessert on the house, which is when we shared the delicious Keylime pie.
