Cloak + Petal
Our concept for Cloak & Petal was drawn from the implementations of the words themselves. Cloak alludes to the ideas of secrecy and a social sphere below the levels of ordinary life. Petal implies a gathering of friends and families, similar to the Japanese tradition of "hanami", where people gather under the blooming cherry blossoms for food, drinks, and companionship. This "cloak" takes you underground to an abandoned Tokyo subway, a stratum of society all its own, an artist's dream. As you cross the threshold of the space, you enter into a lounge meant to make you feel as though you are seated outside, similar to a waiting platform. A trellis of draping vines and teardrop lights suspends from the ceiling, creating a more intimate feel. Beyond the concrete arches, you are met with high ceilings and cherry blossoms, the epitome of "petal" itself.

The vibe was great. Location great, service great, but I wasn't impressed with the food, especially for the price.
Everything was great.
went for a birthday dinner and everything was amazing. we had drinks, sushi, edamame and the best of all the waygu. the desert they brought was amazing as well. music was a little loud tho.
Great spot. Not a fan of the profanity written on the wall. I swear like a sailor, but It brings the class of the restaurant down.
Food was amazing! Sushi rolls were good sized, excellent quality and worth their prices. This sushi place just became my wife’s favorite, we are definitely going back for another dinner date!
AMAZING drinks, great music and vibe, food is on point! Great experience every time.
Great service! Great food! No matter where seated gives you that VIP feel! 8/10 expierence! Only downside were the Cocktails not up to par! Other than that great all around!
Our waitress was so energetic and fun. The food was exquisite. The ambience was great.
The experience at Cloak & Petal is outstanding. Our group came to San Diego for work & this was highly recommended by several people and it lived up to the expectations. Let the servers guide you through the meal with recommendations and expect to be delighted!
It took 40 minutes from the time I sat down to get a cocktail. The manager had to come help with drink orders. The sushi was not good quality. It was very fishy tasting. We sent back the Toro because it was so bad. We decided to only order 2 rolls and went next door to born and raised for better service and dessert. We won’t be going back. Oh and the drink menu is not great either.
The music doesn’t make any sense
The drinks are an absolute hit, gotta try the Japanese Fried Chicken, the sushi is top grade. Love this place.
Wonderful meal in the most gorgeous space. Wonderful service!
The hostess was very snobby. We were ten minutes early, she said she couldn’t seat us and then told us that we were in the way and needed to wait at the bar. Then once we ordered a drink, she acted like we were inconveniencing her because we were closing out our tab and had to wait for the credit card. Everyone else was lovely, but that’s a little a off-putting for the first impression.
If you want a Vegas type experience I’m SD, this is the place to go.
Great food, service not so great. Took them a very long time to bring us our food. I've been here twice, same slow service.
Good food and a clubby environment...fun for a birthday! The service was slow and music may have been a bit too loud and a bit too much techno. Staff was kind and apologized for slow service
Service was amazing! All the staff was very friendly and attentive. The food and drinks, equally amazing!
Restaurant was amazing. Perfect for our birthday party. Food was average but ambiance was worth it.
This is only my second time writing a review of a restaurant, but our experience at Cloak & Petal was so subpar, I had to. I waited tables for 10 years, so I am pretty tough to upset...I'll make excuses for and shrug off just about everything that goes wrong in a restaurant. We were seated 45 minutes after our reservation. We were told we had six parties ahead of us upon arrival, and we were told a large party had stayed longer then expected. Here's the thing, that type of stuff does happen, but when it does, you do something to show people you're sorry for the inconvenience and you value their patience. When we finally got seated, they gave us edamame as an "I'm sorry." A joke. If people wait that long, you get them a round of drinks at a minimum. From that point, service was incredibly slow. It took us another 30 minutes to get appetizers to our table. They swapped servers 3 times and it never felt like any of them knew what was going on with our order. To be fair, the food was delicious. But I can't say I thought it was worth it. I would not go back and I would not feel comfortable sending friends there.
Service was so bad that I had to rate it low. I won’t be coming back. Our party never had a server the whole night.. kept flagging people down to order.. such a strange experience.
Food was great, but poor service. Added a roll at the end of the evening, and it took over 25 minutes. Both manager and waitress kept avoiding us while we waited with no explanation why a single roll would take 25 minutes to make. Really tainted an otherwise nice meal.
Amazing sushi and even better cocktails! Very knowledgable servers
So we've been wanting to go for a few weeks. Table for 4 at 9pm. We made the reservation on Open Table and marked "birthday" as the special occasion (my fiancee). It took 20 minutes to get seated... It was the weekend so no worries. Then we were seated in the front, next to the hostess stand. We were hungry so we were anxious to see our server. And we waited. And waited. And waited. After 20 more minutes we grabbed the very nice manager and he placed the drink order for us. 20 minutes later the drinks arrived but our wait person was still nowhere to be seen. 10 minutes later, "HI, are you guys ready to order?" She demanded. No introductions. No apologies. Clueless. Nothing. Yes we were ready, after all we put in an hour so far. We chose appetizers and she ran off, not even giving us time to order the mains. We told the runner we wanted to see our waitress. Finally, after we were finishing our appetizers (which had taken 30 minutes) she showed, only to announce it was the last call for food... And there would be NO desserts available for us. Uh, it's a GD birthday!
So we ordered. We ate some good food. And then asked for the check. This was brought to us with bubbly enthusiasm and a comment, "so my name is ______ next time to come in just ask for me!". Not sure we'll ever go back but if we do we definitely won't ask for her.
The food was great! Our server was outstanding! She was attentive and very helpful with the menu. She had two recommendations that were delicious. The whole evening was exactly what we were hoping for.
Mediocrity abounds - cocktails that are just ‘off’, a kitchen that seems to have a garnish going out of business sale and loud loud loud ...
The mixed drinks and pork belly were delicious. The garlic edamame and croquettes were pretty good. The 30th and university roll looked good in terms of presentation but was very bland especially with how many ingredients it had. Pretty disappointing for a $20 roll.
Really delicious unique sushi roles. The food was fabulous and came out quick. Our server unfortunately was pretty MIA so the service was SUPER slow but once we ordered the chef was on it as were the food runners. They were also out of 2 of their signature drinks which was disappointing. It's beautiful and cool inside but kind of an awkward entry and then bam tables...no real place for people to wait so your table could be crowded with people waiting to be seated. I'm glad we went because of the food but I think this is a place you go to once, enjoy and then move on...
There was a lot of confusion at the host station and we were asked by three different servers if we had reservations (after waiting at an empty podium for about five minutes - not long, but we weren’t sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves). We finally were seated and almost 10 minutes passed without an offer of water or intro from our server. The restaurant wasn’t busy by any means, but our server was in the wind the majority of the time. We had more success ordering and asking for menu suggestions by the food runner. The food was Amazing and, even though the drinks sound intimidating, they were really good and paired well with our sushi. I honestly think we just had a inattentive server, everything else was great.
I was severely sick after the meal. Unfortunate.
Immediately when you walk-in, you feel the vibe of the restaurant and just want to start dancing to the 90’s music being played. The food was excellent and the drinks are fun and exoctic to drink and look at. I highly recommend this for a special occasion.
I reserved the table but when I arrived I did not find any free table, and I still had to wait.
“Late night menu substituted. Multiple servers because our waiter never showed. Half the order was delivered and we canceled the rest after 15 minutes when the floor manager came over to say the kitchen was really backed up and he wasn’t quite sure when the food would come. When I then asked for the check he asked if we wanted to wait around and do a take-a-way. He said he didn’t want to charge us for something we didn’t get. When he brought the check he said he didn’t charge for what we didn’t get. Was he expecting a thank you?
So we arrived for the last seating on Valentine's at 10:15and the Valentine's menu was not available anymore, the service was not that great that night but the food we ordered from the late night menu was good
Great experience, very attentive staff, food was unique and delicious.
This was by far the best restaurant I have been to in San Diego. The drinks, appetizers, rolls and desserts were phenomenal. We went to Born and Raised the following night and the quality did not even compare. From the fantastic service to the edgy environment, our experience was definitely one for the books. We will be back with friends next time we head down to SD!
A bit too noisy and service was slow. Upon arrival there was no hostess; we had to wait a moment to be seated/greeted.
I just went here two nights ago and have already recommended this place to my friends. The vibe is very cool/trendy - beautiful tree with lights, pop art paintings from a local San Diego artist (Shane Bowden), and throwback hip-hop music. Everything we ordered was delicious and very fresh (might be one of the best sushi I have had to in San Diego). You need to order the Australian wagyu lettuce cups to share for the table and the La Jolla Pkwyroll. If you like refreshing cocktails, order the elyx fix drink.
My wife and I went minday 2/11. I am a chef in San Diego and have been very excited to check out this beautiful place. The Feeling when you walk in and see the trees is truly magical. It took us right back to Kyoto during hinami. We sat at the bar, and had a wonderfully nice bartender. The Wagyu beef tartar was like butter melting in your mouth with the best sesame flavor. This is some of the softest freshest fish we have ever eaten. 9 piece sashimi sampler was phenomenal. We had a toll topped with fried leeks and phenominal flavor. Drinks at the bar were equally as excellent. Thanks guys! ~Max Willis
