Clever Koi Gilbert Ratings and Reviews
The food was amazing but our server was not the best that we’ve had. I marked that we were celebrating a special occasion in the notes when I made the reservation and she never acknowledged it, never asked what we were celebrating. She may have have too many tables as she only came by a handful of times to check on us and took an unusually long time to grab boxes to box our food up. I even had to hunt down a buser to get a bag to take our leftovers home.
My husband and I ate at the Gilbert Clever Koi on a Saturday night. The dining scene in downtown Gilbert has exploded recently and we wanted to try something new, so we went to Clever Koi. The waitress was very nice and explained the entire menu since it was our first time at the restaurant. She highly recommended the dumplings, so we ordered the drunken chicken dumplings as an appetizer. They were crispy on the outside and very tasty on the inside (some of the best dumplings I have ever had; however, I am not a dumpling expert). I got the pork ramen as my entire and it was excellent. All the flavors went together perfectly and I couldn't stop eating the dish. My husband got the spicy seafood hot pot. He loves spicy dishes and seafood so it was a win-win for him. Beware this dish is very spicy but he loved it. The only downside of this restaurant was a table nearby had children and they were letting them run around their table a bit and were very loud. This is very annoying to other patrons but I don't blame the restaurant for this, just the parents. I guess that's the downside to dining out in Gilbert, kids are always at the restaurants, even on a Saturday night.
I thought the menu items were quite expensive for what you get, it just wasn’t worth the price. I enjoyed the chow mein, but I wouldn’t come back for it and the duck curry was incredibly salty. The drinks were a touch too sugary.
What was most notable about the evening would have to be the extraordinarily slow service. It took us 30 minutes to receive our drink order and most of the drinks were just beers too! The food arrived luke warm in that weird, sat on the counter too long way.
Clever Koi was just an average restaurant. I don’t think that I would go again. The waitress we had was terrific! She was good at helping us decifer the menu since there are many items that are unique. She was very attentive and cheerful. The food was just so-so. We ordered the Brussels sprouts starter. It was lacking in flavor and the Brussels sprouts were underdone. I ordered the pineapple duck. The duck was very dry and didn’t have much flavor - no sauce on it. It was a bland entree. My husband ordered the curry octopus. The octopus was salty and the rice was bland. The curry sauce was good. The restaurant is very noisy and it was difficult to chat at the table.
Average at best. Service was passable, messed quite a few things up. Server kept asking what "we" were ordering. Can't stand when servers use "we" versus "you". Interrupted conversation every time she approached table. Definitely not a well trained server for a busy Friday night. None of the food came out together (we ordered 2 appetizers and 4 entrees for 4 ppl). Literally each item came out by itself like it's own course. Food was tasty, no complaint there. Drinks were not served as requested (wrong glass/garnish, etc). Ambience=0. Really disappointing, especially for the price. Definitely will not return, ever. Embarrassed I chose the restaurant to entertain friends...
Cocktails were very good. Ordered rotisserie lamb; it was just an everyday shoulder chop done on the grill, and a small portion. The lamb was good but the herb/cheese dollop on top WAY overpowered it, so I ended up putting that aside. The giant mostly empty bowl it was served in made it look even smaller, and the smear of dark mashed potato on the side just made the bowl look unclean. There was no ambiance to speak of, it was just... functional. Meh.
The Receptionist was friendly, Waitress and Server were courteous and attentive.
Food was excellent - Pork Ramen, Zesty Noodle, Pork Belly and soft shell crab steam buns were very tasty and good. The East Valley Location is very spacious compare to the Central Phoenix Location. Highly recommend the East Valley.
First time coming here and was very pleased. Our cocktails were fantastic. I had the gimlet and she had the Bees Knees. We started with the chicken dumplings which were outstanding though a bit pricey at $10. We both loved the pork ramen, which was not only delicious, but very good sized portions.
I was quite surprised regarding my experience there. Not because I didn't expect greatness but rather how this restaurant isn't packed all hours of day and night! Amazing look/feel, creative dishes, great flavor, wonderful service... I couldn't have asked for much more! I will definitely be back soon!
Thank you, Clever Koi
Had seen this was rated in the top we went to the Gilbert location on this night. The flavors were good I had the Korean beef good but dry on this particular night. service was great, the restaurant is very pleasing to the eye. I think I will try the PHX local next.
While we found the restaurant somewhat noisy, the food was outstanding, although I thought the dessert selection not terribly good. The pork belly steamed bun I had for an appetizer was so good, I ordered a second when the server asked what I thought of it. The kimchi fried rice was extremely good - so good my entire party thought I had mad the best choice. Very worthwhile dining experience.
Very, very creative menu that does need a lot of help interpreting! A lot of thought clearly went into the creation of each dish. As such, there is not a lot of wiggle room in terms of menu adjustments. While there were a few things that could use improvement, it's very clear that overall, the staff is trying very hard. For us, it is not a place we will seek out to return, but it's worth a try.
Spicy Tuna Chip appetizer, wine and Salmon Noodle Salad were excellent. The "Donut Holes" for dessert were burnt. Lighting was pleasant and interesting. But, the indoor sound level was loud considering there were only a few tables full on this hot, summer, Tuesday night. Would definitely dine here again. Though, would choose the patio in cooler weather.
Service is outstanding! Food is good. Somewhat of a minimal menu. Wine list is truly not the focus. You get only a handful to choose from; one cab, one merlot, etc. They focus on specialty cocktails so, if that's your thing, you may like it. Patio was nice. Again, the service was impeccable.
Always a good time at the Clever Koi in Gilbert. Service was very good, food is delicious and the cocktails are a hidden gem.
Pork Belly steamed buns are outstanding as is the Pork Ramen. Sriracha Wings are my favorite and their homemade sriracha sauces are a must to buy and bring home!
Noise level can be quite loud but that's my only gripe.
Happy Hour is a great time to experience the Clever Koi for the first time.
