Clay Pit Ratings and Reviews
Pretty rude server (he looked hungover...) and the server-in-training would say she was going to take care of something and would disappear for what seemed like a long time. Two times, I saw her some back into the dining area empty handed and then apparently remembered what she was going to do, e.g. bring dessert menus, and left again and returned again. About 15 minutes went by with 3 requests for one guest to get a second beer.
The Clay Pit is a always a great choice especially when vegetarians and meat eaters are dining together. The food was delicious as always and we sat in the quieter downstairs dining room. Our food took a little longer to arrive than we would have liked this visit, but that isn't a great surprise on a busy Saturday night.
Clay Pit was amazing and we can’t wait to go back! We went on a New Year’s Eve double date. It was easy to get a reservation even when numerous other restaurants were booked and the food, service, and atmosphere was perfect. My husband even decided he really wanted a steak even though we were at an Indian restaurant. That was one of the best steaks we’ve had! This is definitely a new favorite when we’re in Austin!!
We have visited this restaurant several times and had wonderful meals and great service over the past two years but this time was different. The service was horrific. We sat waiting to be acknowledged. We waited for our food for a longer than acceptable time. The food was very good but not hot just kind of warm. We waited 25 min for our check. This was my 2nd birthday celebration at the Clay Pit and probably my last.
Clay Pit was such a great dining experience! Very creative and authentic Indian cuisine! This is one of our favorite restaurants, and we dine here any time we visit our he Austin area. Downtown Austin, so great scenery and atmosphere is a given. Love, love this place!
The restaurant is bright and decor looks nothing like their pictures. Service was horrible. Our waiter took the drink order and took forever to bring our drinks. Then he dropped off 2 drinks and proceeded to serve a bottle of wine to the table next to us. We were a party of eight, I had go to the hostess and tell her to get somebody to help our waiter because I was embarrassed about the lack of service at our office Christmas party dinner. The staff are untrained and unprofessional. Yelp reviews are misleading. This is not a upscale restaurant, period.
I've been frequenting Clay pit since the early 2000's. It's always pretty good although never so great you wanna slap somebody!
But pretty good is good enough!
I honestly go for the infused vodka although this last time it didn't seem as infused as in the past. Not as spicy or "whoo" as I'd prefer. But again pretty good!
The Mussel Sauce (kind of a thinner version of the Tikka Masala) is always delightful! And any Naan you choose is a great sponge for it!
I wish they would add a few gluten free items to the appetizer list. I'm surprised that since they use chickpea flour in the pakoras that they couldn't just make them gluten free. And what happened to the Lentil Cracker thingys you used to get with your chutney!!!????
All in all it was pretty good! Was it the best meal I have ever had? Nope, but it never has been!
Consistently "good enough" for 15+ years!
Our server Barry was a corny delight!
Pretty good job guys!
Our 1st visit. Super food in historic building. Food arrived comfortably quick...but not rushed. Waiter Barry was informative and attentive—but not over bearing. Excellent wine recommendation.
Was pleasant, fun dinner before Bass performance. We’ll be back
Have really enjoyed Clay Pit in the past, but the last few visits have left me feeling unsatisfied. The food went from authentic and soulfull, to lacking in taste and composition. The waited did well in managing orders and checks but was less than personable. The reservation was ready and the host was cheery, prompt, and very helpful. The bar staff was also accommodating and eager to assist, but the overall dining experience was the last strike for me and I will not be returning.
Excellent, authentic Indian food, slow service!
I reserved a table a month in advance for five family members to celebrate my husband's birthday. The day before the reservation, I called The Clay Pit to inquire about having a cake delivered to our table after dinner. They told me I would have to call back the day of the reservation and ask for it again, not sure why. The five of us ended up sharing the complimentary piece of cake given to my husband.
The evening of our reservation we were served by a woman named "Cat" who was friendly. However, getting our beverages took a long while and the dinner took even longer. We sat down at 6:45pm and didn't receive our food until much later...8:30pm or so.
The Clay Pit is excellent for something casual but I would not recommend it for a special occasion.
I met up for inner with friends that were staying nearby at the DoubleTree Hotel on 15th. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal ... the food and service were excellent. We all agreed we would come here again and recommend Clay Pit to our friends.
Special birthday occasion. First they gave away our table to someone else. Once they fixed that (after 20 minutes of waiting after a reservation), they asked us if this was a special occasion, after we had already mentioned during our reservation process that the was a birthday celebration. Ok!! So we finally get to dessert and there is nothing special. No candle, no congrats. They comped one of our desserts. Big deal. The local taco joint did more for my birthday than you guys did. And I spent a tenth of the money. Sorry to see this from you guys. You used to be better. That’s the story of Austin. Good restaurants get popular and forget customer services. Will think twice about recommending ClayPit again to my coworkers.
i was blown away by the quality and taste of the food. the only reason we gave 4 stars for service was because our food was delivered early just after we had received our appetizers.
As vegetarians we do have one recommendation and that is to cook your grilled veggies in a completely seperate grill instead of sharing the same grill with the meat and putting them on one side. because we noticed our grilled veggies had the flavor of smoked steak. that was the only unappetizing part about the meal. everything else was 5 star fantastic. well be back for sure.
I go to Clay Pit about 2-3 times a month. The food is almost always great. This time the food was more room tempature and not hot. The food served in the metal bowls seemed hotter but my curry came in a kindof soup bowl. The portions also seem to be getting smaller for some reason this past year. The service was great and if you like Indian Food, this is the place to go in Austin.
Had been told by a handful of people that Clay Pit was the “best” Indian food in Austin. It was also advised that one needed reservations. For my boyfriends 25th birthday I️ made reservations 6 weeks ahead of time and we were both very excited. Therefore, unbelievably disappointed when they seated us in the back room against a wall (weren’t even crowded, definitely didn’t need reservations). Furthermore, we arrived early so that we could specifically get a drink at the bar, but were instructed by the very unfriendly hostess that we needed to wait for our table.
The simosas and chicken tikka masala was luke warm and the naan was actually cold. Our waiter was very nice, but clearly our food had been sitting or not heated up properly, therefore the nice waiter didn’t quite make up for the overall disappointing food and ambience. We live on the east side of Austin so it was a hassle to get over the Clay Pit, especially when we have other Indian food options within walking distance.
Waiter was apologetic, but very tardy and overworked. We weren't in a hurry, but if we had been, it would be been frustrating to be there about 45 minutes longer than necessary. Good food. So disappointed that they don't put any free offering on the table like the little crackers with the sauces that we'll be reluctant to go back except maybe for a happy hour. Even when we mentioned it, it didn't occur to waiter to bring us some--he just said that many people weren't eating them, so they quit offering them.
Always fantastic! We live in Houston but travel to Austin frequently. This is our favorite restaurant to visit when we are in town. Great food and service in a warm atmosphere...it never disappoints!
Special kudos to the Clay Pit for turning my picky eater daughter into an absolute fan of Indian food!!!
Not what I expected from claypit at all. I've dined here many times before (even had my birthday for 13 people there last year) and usually have had good experiences.
That said, I typically don't dine on a weekend and this time we went on a Friday night. Perhaps that's why things were not good this time?
Our server seemed way too busy and our food was luke warm at best. Our lamb dish was way too gamy and our musssels gritty. I regret not saying something when we were there but we were celebrating a special occasion and I didn't want to ruin the evening. I think next time we will try a different Indian restaurant
Nighttime ambiance of Clay Pit is like a brightly lit garage or cafeteria, which we didn't like. Food is just average for Indian, but I've been spoiled with great Indian spots in India, UK, San Francisco and New York — so I may be biased! Most of our sauced dishes were room temperature and over-blended. Servers pushed alcohol a bit too much. Menu is a bit banal and could use some more exciting options.
Outstanding in every way. Terrific food and atmosphere. Helpful staff. Great on recommendations. The cucumber salad was amazing with just the right amount of spice. The ribeye was a great value. Great To share with other dishes.
We will definitely be back!!!
