Clay Pit Ratings and Reviews
I go to Clay Pit about 2-3 times a month. The food is almost always great. This time the food was more room tempature and not hot. The food served in the metal bowls seemed hotter but my curry came in a kindof soup bowl. The portions also seem to be getting smaller for some reason this past year. The service was great and if you like Indian Food, this is the place to go in Austin.
Had been told by a handful of people that Clay Pit was the “best” Indian food in Austin. It was also advised that one needed reservations. For my boyfriends 25th birthday I️ made reservations 6 weeks ahead of time and we were both very excited. Therefore, unbelievably disappointed when they seated us in the back room against a wall (weren’t even crowded, definitely didn’t need reservations). Furthermore, we arrived early so that we could specifically get a drink at the bar, but were instructed by the very unfriendly hostess that we needed to wait for our table.
The simosas and chicken tikka masala was luke warm and the naan was actually cold. Our waiter was very nice, but clearly our food had been sitting or not heated up properly, therefore the nice waiter didn’t quite make up for the overall disappointing food and ambience. We live on the east side of Austin so it was a hassle to get over the Clay Pit, especially when we have other Indian food options within walking distance.
Waiter was apologetic, but very tardy and overworked. We weren't in a hurry, but if we had been, it would be been frustrating to be there about 45 minutes longer than necessary. Good food. So disappointed that they don't put any free offering on the table like the little crackers with the sauces that we'll be reluctant to go back except maybe for a happy hour. Even when we mentioned it, it didn't occur to waiter to bring us some--he just said that many people weren't eating them, so they quit offering them.
Always fantastic! We live in Houston but travel to Austin frequently. This is our favorite restaurant to visit when we are in town. Great food and service in a warm atmosphere...it never disappoints!
Special kudos to the Clay Pit for turning my picky eater daughter into an absolute fan of Indian food!!!
Not what I expected from claypit at all. I've dined here many times before (even had my birthday for 13 people there last year) and usually have had good experiences.
That said, I typically don't dine on a weekend and this time we went on a Friday night. Perhaps that's why things were not good this time?
Our server seemed way too busy and our food was luke warm at best. Our lamb dish was way too gamy and our musssels gritty. I regret not saying something when we were there but we were celebrating a special occasion and I didn't want to ruin the evening. I think next time we will try a different Indian restaurant
Nighttime ambiance of Clay Pit is like a brightly lit garage or cafeteria, which we didn't like. Food is just average for Indian, but I've been spoiled with great Indian spots in India, UK, San Francisco and New York — so I may be biased! Most of our sauced dishes were room temperature and over-blended. Servers pushed alcohol a bit too much. Menu is a bit banal and could use some more exciting options.
Outstanding in every way. Terrific food and atmosphere. Helpful staff. Great on recommendations. The cucumber salad was amazing with just the right amount of spice. The ribeye was a great value. Great To share with other dishes.
We will definitely be back!!!

The food was fine- not the best indian food i've had nor the worst. the portion sizes for the main entrees were great- everyone was well fed, but the portion size of the appetizers was really small. when we got to the restaurant we were seated after a couple of minutes so there was not a long wait and we did have a reservation. however, after we ordered our meal we waited for nearly an hour until our main dishes came. we were a party of 5, and it was ridiculous that it took so long for our meals to come. even at the end of the evening we wanted to pay it took a while for the waitress to come back to collect the credit card. it wasn't a super busy evening. we went on a thursday night and by the time we were leaving, the place was mostly empty so i don't know why it took so long to get the waitress to come pick up the check.
We took a group of 16 people here on a Tuesday for a team dinner. Our waitress was wonderful, running around grabbing drinks and clearing plates and generally being everywhere at once. We ordered (it felt like) one of everything and ate family style. The pacing was perfect. Apps came out, we annihilated those, and then we had time to digest, grab a drink, and gab before the mains came. This way we weren't overfull and could actually enjoy trying everything. We never felt rushed, the food was great, and the staff was friendly and fun. 10/10 would go back.
I love the Clay Pit. Whenever I come to Austin I try to make it in there. The food is always amazing. The service is generally very good. Last night seemed a bit off. The music is a little loud. Those are the only two negatives I have found. Great restaurant!!!
The food was amazing, as always, but our server was particularly horrible. Ordering took forever, then she forgot an appetizer. It took her 20 minutes to check in with us after the food was dropped off even though we were trying to make eye contact with her for a solid 10 minutes. Every single one of her tables around us were having bad service too. She was just lucky we had nowhere to be because it took us an hour and a half to get out of there from when we were seated... and we didn't even order dessert or ask for to go boxes.
Food was delightful. Service was mediocre. AND bad service is easy to fix with a manager visit or a free dessert. Had fun, cause we really needed the night out and food was good but won't be back...will still let friends know food is great, but will also alert them to bad service.
Food is excellent. Service is poor: from check-in through the check. Even with a reservation, a long wait and poor welcome. Then, a VERY impatient waiter, if not with guests, I would have left based upon the wait staff interaction. I was happy we left and had dessert elsewhere.
The food was great as always. My only problem was we had two coupons each for two people and they wouldn't let us use them if we sat at the same table which I thought was exceptionally stupid. But it's a great place, it was very noisy but the food is just fantastic
If I want a friend/family member to experience good Indian food for the first time, or I want to provide a solid slightly-above-casual dining experience, the Clay Pit is my go-to restaurant. Lively atmosphere in a really lovely stone building downtown. Good bar, interesting house drinks, good food, and terrific service.
