Welcome to the Clarendon Tavern! Offering seasonal, locally sourced and handmade ingredients. Beautifully designed to embrace our heritage building roots with a modern twist. Chef Dave Godsoe was inspired by the vibrancy and character of the market when creating this menu. Sister restaurant to Eighteen, Social and Sidedoor.
Come in for Lunch, Brunch, Dinner, late night and handcrafted cocktails. Located in the heart of the Ottawa Byward Market.
Ate in the dining room for the first time last Saturday night. Place has great ambiance and the service was attentive. Food was good but pretty expensive.
Not a fan of the TVs, would ask for other section next time. Pizza was just okay, buttermilk fried chicken was amazing and the burger was good. Could have better cider options. Decor was great. Would definitely go back. A great spot in the market without being too touristy.
The brunch sadly leaves much to be desired in terms of the food quality and service. The fruit had gone bad so it had an usually bitter taste, the toast was over toasted and the portions were a tad too small.
The service standards could be improved - the wrong beverages were brought to the table; we repeatedly had to ask for things (e. g. cutlery, milk, etc) and what we ordered was missing from our plates. When we looked for our server who wasn’t necessarily available the other servers walked by us seemingly oblivious to our obvious need for assistance. They didn’t stop by to ask if they could help in some way seemingly they work in silos.
Dinners have been great but our first time having brunch was a disappointment.
Forced my group of 8 to order off a reduced menu with no notice when the place was virtually empty. The manager was extremely rude when we asked if we could order certain items off the regular menu. Very misleading descriptions on the menu. Terrible experience overall.
I think the food was just fair, it lacked any real flair or flavour. It was like having a great ambiance and service but with lack luster food. Really missed the mark I'd go back from the ambiance but outside that... Dubious on spending money there agin.
Service by Waiter was great but the food is absolutely awful.
First time going here in 15 years of going to Ottawa every September for an event! Will definitely be going back!
Some different combinations on the menu, but it was a great meal. Service was outstanding and the staff were friendly. I'll probably go again next time I'm in Ottawa...
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Clarendon. Our server stood out as exceptional. She was incredibly friendly, patient, and thorough. We had several food allergies in our party and she was compassionate and instilled confidence throughout. The food was well presented and tasty and the atmosphere on the outdoor patio was perfect for a late summer evening. Love the Clarendon.
Sunday brunch was delightful. The food delicious, the ambience charming, and the staff simply lovely. Thank you!
Group of 6 went for lunch. I had lamb burger which was so bad I couldn’t tell if I was eating meat - no flavouring and couldn’t taste the advertised jerk sauce. Others ordered cod and chips and Buddha bowl but nobody raved about the food. Seemed just ok. Surprise at end when the house gin ‘special’ cost twice the amount as my plain G&t made with Bombay sapphire. And the bill came with a 18% gratuity charge!!! I find that insulting - I like to choose what to tip. So one persons meal (no starter or dessert) with one drink came to $50. For LUNCH. I won’t be going back.
We were delighted to find out, upon arrival, that we were seated at a table on the patio. It was a beautiful evening and so nice to be outside. Lots of ambiance in the courtyard there. The service was excellent, and the food came quite quickly. I was pleased with my meal. I have no idea how the others felt about theirs. And since the bill was looked after by one of our party, I can't really comment on that.
I do know my husband found his cod had an extraordinarily firm crust on it; my pizza was tasty, but I don't know that I would order it again.
It was a perfect restaurant for the different age levels of our group. Food was great, ambience and noise level perfect for conversation. The kids loved the fish and chips!
My friend and I felt immediately at ease in the welcoming atmosphere, furnishings and lighting. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal; the portions were just right and the mix of flavours was superb. Very attentive service. We will most certainly go back!
June 30th: Our group of 7 had pizzas and cauliflower app which were all very good. However, we were surprised when the waiter (professional and courteous) told us when we arrived they were only offering a limited menu because of Canada Day weekend. Our choice of restaurant was based on the full menu so major disappointment. We ordered a pitcher of white wine sangria which tasted like sugared water. You have to know that people who like sangria can taste the difference immediately. Not that we're looking to get trunk on sangria, but for $20+, you should be able to taste the wine and liqueurs at least. Should have returned it. With so many choices of restaurants in Ottawa, not sure I'll be going back.
Nice place, and staff but slow service. Food was average. Won’t be back soon.
Unfortunately, food was a huge “miss”. Service was subpar at best. Really disappointed - heard great things but saw none of them...
Terrible food, but service and ambiance was good. Don't recommend it.
I was so impressed by the renos & décor. The menu is varied in choice & price. Food quality is spot on. Great location fills the pre requisites for a go to place.
Surprisingly good, first time ever there for dinner, quite an interesting menu but well executed and friendly and attentive staff.
Tuna wasn’t great, you needed a knife to cut up the avocado (_severely underripe) that was in a salad which could have more flavour. Lamb Kafka was great.
Quantity sucks. Been before and was better. Happy hour on menu states 9pm-till close. We were told it was 10pm and the menu is wrong. They did not give in to let us have happy hour drink at 9pm.
Was not impressed with this last visit.
I really enjoy lunch at the Clarendon when I am in the Market area. The food is always delicious and the beer recommendations are great. This was my first experience of dinner st the tavern and it definitely delivered. Great chicken and arugula pizza, the cauliflower starter was addictive. Recommend the food and the experience.
How I miss the Black Tomato! But this place was pretty good. Really efficient floor plan with lots of seating even though it’s small. I had a few appetizers and my friend enjoyed the veggie burger. Deconstructed cheesecake was okay. The apple cobbler was divine!
GOOD EXPERIENCE.Quiet table for a family birthday celebration.Good menu options.Food was well prepared and presented.Good cocktail and wine options. Very good server, knowledgeable, and attentive.Quite warm ,maybe this is the shoulder season and temperature will be controlled better soon.Great decor and ambiance.
je n ai pas aime cet endroit. ca veut pas dire que c est pas bien le prix correspond pas a la qualité de la nourriture
We were seated in the dining room which has no air circulation so although our food was really good, we were sweating to our seats. There are other areas to sit. I wish we had of been in the lounge area instead.
We didn’t have one server but rather everyone was kind of looking after us which also meant no one was really. We sat and waited for our bill for about 30 minutes and when she brought it, she simply set it in the table upside down and she rushed by. Didn’t say a word.
The noise level was okay until a large group came in beside us and then it got quite loud.
We know it is difficult to manage a group, but all went well and the staff smiled and laughed with us throughout our stay. Portions are a good size and of very good quality. Desserts are shareable if one wishes!
Beautiful decor! We had brunch we our friends from out of town Easter weekend and the food was great but a bit on the pricey side. Would still recommend, the service was wonderful and nice ambiance.
Just a little warm in the bar area. Windows opened did let some fresh air in
Our server Arthur was great :) Food was tasty, and the ambiance was nice for our small group.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Would definitely recommend the Clarendon for brunch, lunch and/or dinner. We have tried it for each and we were impressed each time.
Manager and server were excellent. Food was nasty. Buttermilk chicken was apparently dark meat, so it looked under cooked. They were good to accept the return with no hassle. Then got a flatbread which was pretty poor quality. I get better at happy hours at Earls. Wine tasted stale or not stored properly. I'm sure there are better places in the area. Skip this one.
Arthur was amazing! As was the scotch egg on the bar menu... yummm! We are going to make it a weekly even to come by, sit at the bar, and have a scotch egg each with a pint of Hamilton's own Collective Arts!!!!
Tasty food, imaginatively prepared, attentive service in charming surroundings.
I was there for brunch and felt that the cost of the meal in relation to the level of service was not a good value. The service was quite slow and took a long time before a server even approached the table to offer coffee. The worst part was that their drip coffee is $4, and does NOT include refills. I didn't get a warning that it would be at a cost when I asked for a top-up. Even the most high-end brunch spots in the city offer free coffee refills at brunch. It was almost $30 for brunch for one person (no alcohol) which I thought was too steep, given that the food was just okay. I had the chicken & & waffles - the chicken had a nice flavour, though the coating wasn't crispy. The waffles seemed like they'd been reheated from the day before. Real maple syrup, which was nice. And the decor/atmosphere is nice & cozy.
I’ve been to The Clarendon Tavern twice in the last couple of weeks. Food is great and the decor is super cozy. Unfortunately, on both occasions, it took more than 10 and 15 minutes to have a server come to our table to take our first order. On the second occasion, the restaurant wasn’t busy at all and employees would come to our section but not even look at us which would had made it possible to ask for our first drinks. Afterwards, service is okay, but again it took time to have the waiters come back to our table for a second glass of wine or to order another dish.
So, food is great but the service isn’t always top notch.
Drinks for the table came more than 15 minutes apart, but otherwise the atmosphere is lovely.
Very good food, unfortunate that they ran out of maple syrup which should of been served with the waffles and was not advised first or offered anything else in replacement.
It was an amazing experiment. I took my girlfriend here because of the atmosphere and the simplicity.
Service was friendly, the servers didnt hesitate to joke around while we were ordering. Food was really well made for my taste. The drinks were on point. Can't ask for more
