We had reservations for 830p. It was a super busy night. This was my first time there so I don’t know if this was normal. There were three waiters on the floor but even most of the tables were packed. There were 3 of us and we just ordered drinks and left. That whole process took about 45-60min. We ended up eating next door mostly because we didn’t want anything on the City Winery menu. I’ll try to make it on a not so busy night and see if there’s a difference.
I would recommend it for The concerts, but definitely not for the service-which was terrible!!
Grown and sexy vibes. I definitely reccomend this place if you like a mature crowd.
We were out on a night on the town celebrating my husband's birthday with family and friends. I had been looking forward to visiting your restaurant for some time, however, our waiter seemed very overwhelmed and appeared to become frustrated with my guests for asking to put in drink orders. He also started it would work better for him if we ordered appetizers and drinks first. We had to remind him on several occasions about food we had not received. I was able to speak with the manager who was somewhat helpful. But overall, I would not be interested in going back.
After considering this venue formour wedding, I decided to take my fiancé here on for his 40th birthday; kind of a trial run. I made my reservation for 20 three weeks in advance and emailed severl times to increase the party size with no incident. On the day of the event, I receoved a call around 4pm that our 830 reservation wpuld need to be pushed until 9pm due to over booking of large parties. When we arrived at 850, I check in with the hostest and was told that we would need to wait. We were finally sat at 1030 and did not leave until 12:10; the restaurant was turning off the lights. Our service was slow with the manager having to take put orders and run our food. The manager tried to right the wrong by providing us with a champagne toast but, the inconvenience was enough to completely remove the venue from our wedding list and not be able to reccomend this space to any other friends.
The space is beautiful and the wine flight was delicious, but it was so cold I never took off my coat and my fingers and feet were freezing, even though I was bundled up. We even left early because of it. Please get the heat fixed.
Love the music venue but I will probably order food here again unless it’s an appetizer to accompany a glass of wine. The menu needs overhaul. The wings were just ok. The thin crust pizza wasn’t bad. The wait staff seems to be improving from the reviews u read but they need professional training. Especially training in what to say to customers when they are short on wait staff and this may mean a slight delay in their service. Based on the food and drink prices, I’m not sure why they’re operating this place like they’re on a shoe-string budget. Needs a huge step upwards.
The restaurant is beautiful but the food was mediocre at best and the service was lacking. Seemed like maybe they were short staff or training some new employees- three people were basically doing everything and running all over the place frantically. I wouldn’t recommend.
The venue is beautiful aesthetically but the service and menu needs some attention. We experienced slow service throughout the entire dinner service and had to remind the server we hadn't received our wine and/or food.
The food and drinks were excellent but the service was pretty slow! Overall we had a great time though.
Great experience will be back again
Unorganized when really busy- sat a walk-in party before a party of the same number with a reservation (the whole party of 5 was present at the reservation time). Then another 45 minutes before being seated (near a drafty window as a last resort). After being seated, we waited another 15 minutes before one of us found the hostess to ask about our server. One of the managers then comes to take our order.
They did give a complimentary bottle of champagne and numerous apologies and thank yous for our patience. (Jasmine was very nice) But no one checked on us throughout the time we were eating, apart of a meal was missing, and again after waiting 20 min, one of us had to tell a worker that we were ready for the check.
The food was good, service poor, service recovery mediocre, layout (amount of space for dining) not conducive to a Friday night in Washington DC.
This is the second time we have gone to City Winery for dinner - the food was excellent both times. The first was a dinner & concert, and this time was for my wife's birthday. The place was hopping for a Friday night - lots of after work crowd (that is why I gave it "energetic" for noise level). She started with the grilled romaine - super tasty and I had the mushroom risotto balls - which I will get again! For the main she had the roasted chicken and I had the shrimp piri piri - she enjoyed hers and I felt mine was a bit cool (but had a excellent flavor). We both had the olive oil cake - to die for. Every City Winery "tap" wine has been excellent.
The idea of city winery is a good one and the interior was nice. However the service and food leave a lot to be desired. I ordered a kale cesaer salad with shrimp. When it came out there were three small shrimp. For $21 I’d expect more. My friend ordered the crab cakes with sweet potato fries. Her food was cold when it came out so she asked the waitress for a new one. The waitress had to find a manager to address the issue which took several minutes. The manager finally came and took her plate to get a fresh one. 25 minutes later, I’d eaten my food and my friend was still waiting for her food to come back. She eventually told them never mind. A couple minutes later her food did come out though. But it was still cold! I’d go again to check out the concerts but would not eat at the restaurant again.
Terrible service, lack of wine knowledge, slow table service.
Service and wine list were great plus the Tequila educational tasting workshop. Greeters, servers, and workshop leader friendly. Food not so great. Ate at restaurant from full menu and food was of average quality and my wife's entree was bland and uninspiring to say the least. Come here for other activities but eat a meal elsewhere before arriving.
The ambiance and food were excellent! We were a group of 4 first timers there for restaurant week. Great portions and a diverse menu. Jackie the hostess was warm, friendly and welcoming. She even accommodated a table change for us to avoid the breeze from the door. The restaurant was barely half full so it wasn't a busy night. The only disappointment we had was the server. We sat for 30 minutes before she ever even approached our table. We had to approach Jackie twice during that 30 minute time period before she even came. We also ran out of water and eventually had to request things from another staff member. The manager came over eventually and just asked if everything was okay now but didnt offer anything for the extended wait. Minus the poor service, it was a nice experience. I hope that improves in the future.
Surprised by this location where was used to be a dangerous area in DC. Today, it is vibrant, renewed and crowds. Food is modern, creative, and the show is wonderful. Rarely to see such a gem in a rough location (was).
I liked the place, but, during winter months for the rooftop, they should install some type of heating system. Unless you were dancing or watching the performers you couldn't enjoy your meal without shivering while eating. The services need improvement because half the time you couldn't find your waitress for services, much less to pay for your meals.
We spent New Years Eve here and it was amazing. The ambiance with the food and wine selection set the night off. We will be returning
Had a reservation, but they're no good in the Wine Garden. Seating is on a first-served basis. People hold seats for their friends so it's hard to find good seats even arriving early. The service sucks. You have to leave your table and place all food and drink orders at the bar and one bartender makes the drinks, enters the food orders, collects the payments, etc for a long line of people. There's only 1 cash register. It takes approx 20 mins or more per person because the bartender has to make every drink order on the spot while taking food orders. You leave the bar with a empty wine bottle with a number on it that directs wait staff to find you later to give you your food. But, the wait staff not having laid eyes on you wanders around like 3 blind mice in a maze searching in the dark for wine bottle numbers when all the tables are pushed together and they can't see the wine bottle because some people had order real bottle of wine so as not to stand in line another two hours or more. Meanwhile, the food servers run all around the room in with your food in completely open containers getting cold and absorbing all the germs in the air and from the people caring your plate right up against their bodies without using serving trays. There's no silverware on the tables so you can't even eat right away when your food arrives.
Food was great! We had the crab cakes; shrimp; curry lentil soup; brussel sprouts; flight of wine; chicken wings and marguerita pizza. Service was TERRIBLE!
I was enjoying my food until I discovered over half way through the meal that my pork chop was blood rare. I had to wait 30 minutes to valet the car. I was packed into a car and driven to a parking lot to retrieve my car after dinner and a concert. I was charged $3 per coat for coat check ; and I spent money on dinner; concert tickets; drinks & nibbles at concert. I feel I spent too much for a subpar evening!
The food was delicious. Our server was amazing and helped with wine selections. I wish I could remember his name and shout him out. The wait wasn’t too long either. I would come back and dine again and recommend to others.
Likes the ambience but was understaffed and service was slow due to understaff. The “Tour of Meats and Cheese” was not impressive and lacked for what it cost. We were not impressed with the Truffle Mac-n-Cheese. The Manager on staff was helpful and accommodating. She gave us a look into the wine room. Because of her, we are interested in coming back and hopefully have a better experience.
It was a great experience. Jamie, our service was amazing and attentive. The food was perfect, the music was great, the vibe was great. Everyone truly looked like they were having a good time. I could not have asked for more. I will for sure be coming back here again!
We had a reservation but ended up having to sit in the bar area. The service was so slow. It took 30 mins. just to get drinks. Then my husband had to send his drink back twice because it has a fly in it - twice! My main course was cold. We’d come in an uber prepared to celebrate our anniversary. By the end I’d had 1 drink and I could not wait to get out of there!
Food was excellent. Unfortunately, service was very poor to non-existent. Waiting to be seated in a place with only 4, maybe 5 tables occupied in the entire restaurant was ridiculous (and yes, we had reservations!) Even after finally getting seated, service continued to be bottom.
The service was bad—although the management staff did apologize and pay for appetizers we didn’t see anything we had ordered (not even a glass of wine) for an hour plus. The food was somewhere between mediocre and good. Definitely not worth it ultimately.
Service was so disappointing—they had one server (God bless her!) for the entire dining room and cocktail area on a Saturday night. Wine was good and food was decent, but we couldn’t get anyone’s attention to order a second round. Women’s Bathroom was also dirty, with several stalls that needed attention.
Great ambience. Food was good but nothing to rave about.
I really want to like this place. The atmosphere is fantastic, a beautiful setup. And the concept is wonderful. There's just not enough people working there right now. We waited a long time on a Saturday night, and the place wasn't even that busy. It won't take much to improve this place - I hope they can get it right.
For two sides and and app the final ticket wasn’t worth the taste of the food. The food tastes like I went to the Olive Garden. I’m not sure I will return for that.
Great venue for live music, food was pretty good, as was the wine. However I found the food and beverages were quite expensive, especially since they make the wine on the premises.
We were seated and no one came to serve us after 10 minutes we left. The restaurant had almost no one in it so I don't understand why the poor service. I've never walked out of a restaurant ever and we eat out 3 times every week.
The food was way overpriced for the quality. Food was either over salted, cold, or exceptionally greasy. Would definitely recommend against eating here fir dinner, but the wine was good. At their price point, thru really need to up their quality of food.
This was the first time at this restaurant. We were warmly greeted, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the menu enticing. The wine menu is extensive. There are also fun cocktails.
Our wait people were knowledgeable about the menu items and very helpful when it came time to make decisions. The food had a lovely presentation and was most delicious!
Yes, we would come back!
The overall service was horrible. We made reservations to find there was a wedding upstairs. Staff was slow, sat for a long period before any server arrived. Wine "finally" served with cork residue in the glass. Sent back. Ordered crab cakes that never came and the server stated "he forgot" to put the order in. Should have adequate staff when a private event is taking place to accommodate the "regular" dining customers. Server needs to tie dreadlocks back when serving food and wash his hands when coming back from a cigarette break. Yea-we saw him smoking=perhaps that is why he forgot to put in our crab cake order. Would be a better restaurant if the quality of the staff is improved.
After sitting for 20 minutes without service... I realized there was 1 server for a Saturday night. Every couple appeared to be highly upset. Very disappointing after driving an hour for a date night. We got up and left. Ivy City Smokehouse next door was amazing !
My husband and I were really excited to try City Winery. Imagine our disappointment when an hour into our dining experience only one of our drinks had arrived and the SINGLE waiter working in the entire restaurant circled back to tell us that he forgot to give the kitchen our order when he took it 25 mins prior. Service was completely lacking, and we received no apology for our ridiculously poor experience.
