City Winery DC Barrel Room Restaurant & Wine Bar
Daily 5:00 pm–12:00 am
This was the first time at this restaurant. We were warmly greeted, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the menu enticing. The wine menu is extensive. There are also fun cocktails.
Our wait people were knowledgeable about the menu items and very helpful when it came time to make decisions. The food had a lovely presentation and was most delicious!
Yes, we would come back!
After sitting for 20 minutes without service... I realized there was 1 server for a Saturday night. Every couple appeared to be highly upset. Very disappointing after driving an hour for a date night. We got up and left. Ivy City Smokehouse next door was amazing !
The overall service was horrible. We made reservations to find there was a wedding upstairs. Staff was slow, sat for a long period before any server arrived. Wine "finally" served with cork residue in the glass. Sent back. Ordered crab cakes that never came and the server stated "he forgot" to put the order in. Should have adequate staff when a private event is taking place to accommodate the "regular" dining customers. Server needs to tie dreadlocks back when serving food and wash his hands when coming back from a cigarette break. Yea-we saw him smoking=perhaps that is why he forgot to put in our crab cake order. Would be a better restaurant if the quality of the staff is improved.
My husband and I were really excited to try City Winery. Imagine our disappointment when an hour into our dining experience only one of our drinks had arrived and the SINGLE waiter working in the entire restaurant circled back to tell us that he forgot to give the kitchen our order when he took it 25 mins prior. Service was completely lacking, and we received no apology for our ridiculously poor experience.
I was excited to try this restaurant for my birthday after a friend told me she had a great experience. I made reservations through open table just in case the restaurant was full. Arrived early was seated immediately as there wasn't that many people there that evening. Was a bit disappointed with the service and the food. City Winery salad lacked flavor and the Chocolate waffle was hard and chewy (it tasted like it was stale). My friend ordered a flatbread that never came. Nonetheless the wine was and conversation was good. Maybe we would have had a better experience during an evening with entertainment.
I enjoyed my dining experience. The food was very good and the portion size was great.
Awful. We waited over an hour for the first course of our meal. When the second course came, we had to get to go boxes and totally miss the dessert course. We kept trying to order more wine but the servers rushed off. Never going back.
The restaurant/winery was very nice. We went on a dinner date for restaurant week . It seems like there are a lot of kinks to work out from the communication between the wait staff and the kitchen. My husband ordered a burger and it took 4 times for it to come out right. Meanwhile, as we sent each burger back, I was still waiting on my margarita (cheese ) pizza. I was not impressed with the pizza at all. On the upside, the mushroom risotto was good and the wine flight was paired well with each course of my
Meal. Our server was very nice and professional.
Came here for restaurant week and everyone from the manager to the hostess to the wait staff was poor. The manager was not much help to rectify the situation until we flagged her down so we could leave. Only thing good was the wine.
Very disappointed. We were looking foreword to checking out City Winery for restaurant week. First they did a bait and switch on our wine (we tried one and they gave us another). Second, two of us ordered off the normal menu. Our mains came so far before our entree they asked if we wanted desert. The other two got he special restaurant week menu and it took almost an hour to get their food, which at that point we were finished. Also, with exposed A/C ducts in humid DC we were rained on most of the dinner. VERY unimpressed.
The ambiance was excellent. The waitress was a bit slow for it not to have been very busy. We ordered the steak frites the steak (medium) was too charred and not paired well with the fries that came with the meal. There was too much steak sauce that covered the entire plate which in turn made the fries extremely soggy. I’d return for drinks and maybe the burgers which looked great at the adjoining table.
I went with my best friend for restaurant week. I was enthusiastic based on the description on the website and in the Washingtonian. But I was sorely disappointed. The wine pairings were poor and we received them all before the food was even brought out. The food was barely tolerable and only because I was already starving when I’d arrived. The waitress was probably better suited for their event space as she somewhat implied herself. I won’t be returning and afterward learned co workers of mine had the exact same experience only a day before. So unfortunate because I live relatively close.
Wow! What a great team of folks at the City Winery in Washington, D.C. As a avid dinner party host, I have recurring dinner parties all over the metropolitan area with executives, government officials, entrepreneurs, food critics, influencers, socialites and more. This particular dinner was scheduled during Restaurant Week in City Winery's Wine Garden. Unfortunately, it wasn't communicated to me that the Wine Garden was closed due to an event until I arrived (thank goodness I happen to arrive an hour early to set up). However, Sam (manager on duty) went above and beyond to make special accommodations for me and my guests.
The waitstaff was amazing, ESPECIALLY Gino. Anything I asked of him, he made it happen. He assisted me setting up the table, was present when my guests needed something, provided a detailed explanation of dishes of interest, and gave my guest and I EXCELLENT customer service. If I could request a server every time I visited City Winery, I would absolutely request Gino. Sam, thank you for assigning him as our server for the night. Gino you rock!
BTW, the mussels may be the best thing on the Wine Garden menu and definitely try the wine flight. The in-house made wines are amazing. 5 stars across the board. I'll be back soon.
Keep up the great work.
The people that work there, including the manager on duty, that night, were great!...I think the food needs major improvement, though. The hummus was tasty, but the desserts aren't that great, either. The one good thing I can say is, the wine & sangria were great!
Horrible service, took 30 mins to get drinks, mgmt was not very responsive, and place was sooooo loud. Food was decent but will not go back.
The restaurant was quiet probably because it was a rainy night. Since the venue is fairly new, I think the service still needs to be polished. Timing of my food and my friend's was off. I had mine first and she was waiting while watching me eat before my food got cold. Looking forward to checking out the roof on a sunny day.
Had a great pre-concert meal. The tapas were yummy. The calamari was the best. Followed by the Mushroom flatbread. The Duch tacos were yummy. The Risotto balls were good but I've had better.
The wine was decent and they allow you to taste anything that is served by the glass. The food was very mediocre and small portions even for small plates. For the money you will spend here there are way better wine bars in DC.
First visit there and was surprised that they made use of the whole space while still having separation of areas. The have an area for concerts, a restaurant, rooftop garden and space for wine classes. They have a good variety of wine and the service was good. Will definitely be returning to check out more events there.
