City Winery Barrel Room and Restaurant New York Ratings and Reviews
The food here keeps getting better and better. Excellent red snapper (and a very generous portion), squid ink pasta loaded with lobster, and a lamb shoulder special cooked just right and very tasty. All kinds of wine options, from those made on the premises to a full list. Friendly, informative service. And there's often the music in the next room!
The atmosphere was nice. Only complaint was the air system was a little loud when running. Our server was very nice and checked on us often. The entres we're delicious. We had the short ribs and roasted chicken. The dessert choice was the only thing we didn't like and they didn't seem to be a good value for what we got.
My past experiences at the City Winery Barrel Room had always been good. But this visit was extremely disappointing. The food took a long time to be prepared and the quality was poor.
The squid ink pasta was laden with butter and cheese and stayed in my stomach all afternoon!
I brought clients here because I've been to the City Winery in Chicago, which is lovely. The Barrel Room in NYC is not as nice. The ambience is much more casual - more like a place you would go for a very casual drink with friends. I ordered salmon well-done and they brought it to me extremely rare (wasn't flaking). I sent it back; I'm pretty sure the waiter brought back the same piece of fish that had been microwaved. Would not recommend.
Very Pleasant experience. I went early around 5pm with my parents and it was a relaxed atmosphere. There are tables and also bar area available. We had a delicious appetizer of rizotto balls to share. We each picked out a glass of white wine then got a tasting sampler of three reds to share. Would definitely go back and hope to attend a concert in the future!
Out to dinner with my girlfriend. Had a gilt city coupon for 2 appetizers, 2 entreés and 2 desserts. Got the cheese board and buffalo risotto balls. The cheese board was mediocre at best and the risotto balls were overcooked and unappetizing. For dinner we both got the hangar steak. Rule of thumb, if a steak needs to be drizzled in balsamic to taste good it isn't worth eating. Lastly we got peaches and cream and crème brulé. Both were nothing to write home about. If it wasn't for the coupon and the wine, it would have been a complete waste. Skip dinner and just go for what they're good at: wine
The dinner area and the bar area take up equally big areas of the space.
They serve a number of wines on tap which is unique and interesting. We went there Saturday evening for dinner at 7:15. As it got a bit later, the place got progressively more crowded and frenetic and the waitstaff lost control of the dinner area to some degree, I think they only had one on staff serving many tables in the dinner area.
My suggestion would be to avoid dinner there after 7:30, especially on a weekend, unless you like a frenetic atmosphere and harried waitstaff. Other than that, it was OK.
The salmon was AMAZING! Maybe the best I've ever had!!! The squid pasta was a little underwhelming though - just tasted like seafood spagetti with red sauce. Wasn't super interesting. The octopus appetizer was good but pretty tough in texture (maybe just got a tough octo..). Liked the mezcal cocktail. The rum one was too sweet. Overall we had a great time, sat outside so was quiet. Server was attentive and quick.
May 19, 2017. I received two reservation confirmations. One in the morning of the day of my reservation. After a $30 cab ride, we got to city winery only to find it was closed for a private event. We had tickets to a show later that evening so we didn't have much time to try to find another good restaurant. The manager offered me half off coupons for another date, but I told him I didn't want anything for free but I wanted him to find me a table at another restaurant nearby (I am not local. I am from CT). He said he'd be back in 2 minutes. After ten minutes passed, we had to leave or we wouldn't have time for food before the show. We walked until we found a place that could accommodate us. It was fine, but certainly not the nice birthday dinner I was wanting to give to my friend.
I really enjoyed learning about the huge barrels of wine. They also has enormous factory that looked really cool. The restaurant is small, but the two other city wine rooms where the hold events are great!!! The food was delicious. The beef stew... oh my god so good.
It has become a tradition for my fiancee and I to come to The Barrel Room at City Winery every year on Valentine's Day and this year was no exception. The food is remarkable, the staff is kind, and the wine is some of the best you can find in the city. On Valentine's Day, we tend to come on the earlier side and it is always quiet and feels like a hidden gem. We love that they have both a prix fixe menu and the option to order a la carte. We'll come back as long as they're open.
The Barrel Room is a small restaurant attached to the music venue City Winery. It has a nice choice of wine and everyone was very happy with their meal except the person who ordered the hamburger - which, for the price, he felt was just average. Desserts were very tasty - recommendation: the doughnuts. The recorded music is very loud, so conversation [we were a group of 5] was a bit difficult.
Went after seeing a friends show at the HERE performance space down the block. We arrived at 3:30pm hungry and ready for food but the kitchen was closed and all they could offer us was a cheese plate to split between four of us with three tiny pieces of cheese on it. We stayed until the kitchen opened at 5pm and had their mid level cocktails. The burger was great. The Brussel sprouts were under cooked and pretty bland and took an hour to get out to us. Pretty low to mid level experience. Probably won't go back.
Wonderful experience - food was delicious - wine menu fabulous - can either order from a comprehensive top wine list , or order wines made at the wine making facility within the premises. We were fortunate to have been given a tour of the urban winery there which was very special. Everyone was friendly and very helpful. There was not any music that night but the venue looked great and the list of musicians they've lined up impressive. Definitely worth checking out !!
