The Barrel Room, our elegant restaurant and tasting room at City Winery, provides a relaxing and candlelit ambiance where diners can enjoy wine on tap made just next door. City Winery is the only fully functioning winery in New York City, but we also offer a fine dining menu with options for a full dinner or small plates to accompany a few glasses of our house made wine. In the Barrel Room our wine is poured straight from the barrel into your glass with no added preservatives or extra sulfates, giving it a taste that cannot be replicated. I chose this place for business lunches because it's quiet and not crowded. Food is okay and service is nice.
Unique wine options and cocktails. Barrel area is small but with plenty of seating between tables and bar area. Fun atmosphere

When we went, they had multiple items on the menu crossed out as they were not available. Thus I ordered an item which wasn't crossed out only to subsequently find out that they were out of that item too! I ordered something else only to receive it way after my friends had received their food, and also rushed, as the inside of the sausage I ordered looked undercooked. I ended up sending it back and canceling it. I was very disappointed in the food, but our server was very sweet and apologetic and offered us a free wine flight without charging me for the sausage.
There was a performance at The Venue and we were in The Barrel Room section of the restaurant. Our service was terrible and our waitstaff even admitted they were paying more attention to The Venue than to us.
The staff forgot about one of the appetizers (they brought it when they overhear our comment about it) and about one of the glasses of wine (that one never materialized).
The food was fine but the whole experience was marred by the service.
Delightful. We grabbed food before a show. The food was tasty, good flavors. We did tapas style and were able to try four things. The kale Caesar was phenomenal as is the burrata, perfect seasoning.
Great wine selection. Waiters were pushy though, seemed in a rush all night. Had the Brussel sprout tapa..AMAZING!!
Made a reservation earlier in the day. Seated right away when we arrived. However, after 15 min no server came to our table. Hostess came back to ask if anyone had come and we said no. She brought us menus and gave us a complimentary glass of wine each for the wait. Wheb we were ready to order and still no server (close to 30 min total now). Hostess comes back and says she can take our order. We place place the order with the hostess. She brings our drinks. Another 15 min and a runner brings our food. Food was fine - just ordered apps. We would have ordered more food had we ever had a real server. After we were done with food and drinks still no one else came to our table and the hostess was not around. Went to the bar and asked for our bill. Lady there asked if everything was okay. We said no and we told her what happened. She said the upstairs was busy (downstairs where we were was not and there were at least 3 workers behind the bar talking to each other). She did not offer any discount or compensation. She barely apologized but mostly just blamed it on the upstairs being busy. Very disappointing as I was very excited to try this place. We left and went somewhere else for actual dinner.
The charcuterie plate was a selection of luncheon meats that were taken straight from the pacakge and not even separated. The wine and service were poor.
we had a drink & light snack in the barrel room before an early show nearby, so everything was fine but hard to truly judge with just a glass of wine & spliting a tapa type thing. Still I'd readily go back for more
We went to hear music and decided to eat there first. The service was much to be desired as we ordered several appetizers with our drinks. The drinks came out but the appetizers did not. We got one out of the three appetizers served which we ate, which were delicious by the way (roasted radishes), but were not served the remaining appetizers until our main course came out. By that time, we refused the appetizers as the main course would get cold and there was absolutely no room on the tiny table to even consider keeping the appetizers. The staff apologized and removed them from our bill. Some of us totally enjoyed the music while others did not, as it was canned music, along with the guitarist/piano player Joan Armatrading. I think their service needs more attention but as I was one who enjoyed the music, I would return there but not for dinner!
Great to enjoy wine at the tap, straight from the barrel. Good choice of wine with fresh taste.
Best place to have fresh wine for the lunch on special occasion.

WE really loved the food and it was so affordable. The wine selection is amazing. Only issue would be the temperature as it was freezing in the place.

The food itself was fine. Three members in my group ordered the steak special, and I ordered 2 appetizers and asked for them to come out as a main meal. My food came out early, so I had to either eat it (and then watch my dinner companions eat later), or let it get cold. So, simple instructions apparently can't be followed. The food was tasty, and each couple at the table got a wine flight , which was nice. After we paid and left, we lingered outside a bit to figure out what to do. The server came running out because the other couple we were dining with didn't fill out the receipt info (they signed it, but didn't indicate tip or total). They filled out the tip and total, and then the server had the audacity to essentially ask for more of a tip. Last I checked, tipping anywhere was optional. Our dinner companions were European, so tipping is not very common for them...so any tip was more than they wpuld nirmally give. I understand that in America serers don't make a lot of money, but at the same time...you chose that job. New York is full of opportunities, and you chose to be a server...sometimes people tip, and sometimes people don't. Thems are the breaks in the industry...and you should know that by now.
For an hour lunch, this was perfect! I wish they had soft music playing while dining. Initially, I was the only patron which was eerily quiet. The waitress was delightful with selections and attentiveness.

Sadly we had a subpar experience at City Winery. There were 6 of us for a 9:15 reservation--the earliest time available, even though the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived. We sat and had appetizers and drinks, and by the time we were ready to order dinner, they told us that the kitchen was closed and it had closed at 10pm. No one--not our waitress or hostess--informed us when we sat and were ordering apps that the kitchen would be closing in 45 minutes, not to mention, why take reservations for DINNER that late if the kitchen cannot accommodate?
Needless to say we left hungry, disappointed, and sure not to return. They also charged us for an extra glass of wine at the end, to boot, so make sure you check your bill!
Always enjoy the food here, wonderful flatbreads, excellent main courses and specials. And of course, the wine, made on the premises, by the glass.

Found this place convenient as I was attending a work summit in the area. The food was great! A well balanced menu that has something for everyone :)
We sat in the front space, a small restaurant/bar. It was just right for us. Later it turned out they had an enormous dining/bar/performance area in the back. Both the food and the wine were delicious. The waitress was nice, too. The little candles on the desks were charming. The overall atmosphere was cozy and relaxed.
All staff were fine. Food and beverages were also good
First of all I’m a BIG City Winery fan and patron. I had dinner at their Barrel Room on March 20, 2018 , before the show - the service, hospitality and meal were GREAT!!! It was my B-Day and they were very kind to me. There is no other music room in Manhattan that comes even close to Michael Dorf’s premier showcase venue. I’ve dealt with GM Tim Carosi and Concierge Director Ellen Gold - they’re both very special and will go out of their way to accommodate you if possible. If you want to have a great night out alone or with friends become a Vinofile Member - get wine discounts and advance notice on performances - it’s worth the small price. If you go regularly you’ll identify where you enjoy sitting best and save them to your profile “purchase my selected seats (if they’re still available). Best music venue I’ve ever attended in NYC - except for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall - but they don’t have Executive Chef Mike Jeanty and Wine Maker, David Leconte - the NYC Staff, Hosts and Servers are the best!
The food was great, we were taken care of quickly. Max did a great job!! Will definitely come back when in town again.

Not only was the staff personable, the atmosphere was genuine, the tour guide knowledgeable and the tour itself of the barrel room very interesting. We finished the tour with a lovely tasting of three wines and a cheese platter followed by dinner. Overall, a great find. Who would think you could tour a winery in the city?
Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We couldn't hear. We were seated in a dark back corner where no one checked on us. It was over 30 minutes before we got starters, and no one took our dinner order. I reported this to the hostess and saw her tell our server, but the server still didn't take our order. When I went to the server to say we wanted to leave, she tried to take our order. I said no, paid the tab, and we left. The carafes of wine we ordered we're not fill-size bottles but we're more expensive than any bottles we had at other restaurants in the neighborhood. We didn't like the wine as much as we did at other places. I recommend going here to meet someone for a drink, but your money is better spent on dinner with friends somewhere else. Piccolo Cucina Osteria, Houseman,and Shuka were awesome, had great service, and we're reasonably priced.

I overall had a great experience, from the food to the glass of Sohovingoun Blanc that I had - everything was delicious and overall a GREAT time! I definitely recommend the duck tacos as an app! I’ve never had that before and we tried it on a whim, so so good! Service was great too, my only minor complaint is that we waited a while for some pita to get to our table. We asked for pita after our hummus plate came out and it didn’t come out until the very end of the night.. I guess it’s not really a huge complaint, but we thought it was so odd that something like pita would take the longest of anything to order haha.
All in all a truly fantastic meal.. would recommend the spot to ANYONE!
Well, the food was good, the wine was good BUT The Barrel Room was described as quiet and a place to enjoy a relaxing meal. It was definitely not quiet and they served food with a pace that would win an Olympic medal (our main dish came out a few minutes after our appetizer and we had more that half the appetizer left). After desert though it seemed that everyone was left alone (not a good counterbalance).
potato pancakes was greasy , ordered capers and lox, 15 minutes later served food and told they were out of capers, placed reeked of stale wine, service was poor and slow

The dishes were not delivered with something detailed on the menu, so we tried to get the attention of the waiters to bring it. No waiter came over, even though the restaurant was empty; they were chatting. We had to call to someone to ask, and they took an unreasonably long time to return. And, they didn't even bring the correct item. Shockingly bad service for a slow time. The food was okay, but the starter's portion was way too small for the price.
The City winery is a great venue and has for the most part a nice and enthusiastic staff that is willing to help, assist, or accommodate patrons. I liked the place over all. The food was not what I expected. The humus was average, the pitas were stale. The Duck tacos had no taste and prepared like pulled pork. the Lamb was prepared like a steak and if I was blind folded for a tasting challenge, I would have thought it was a steak. It did not taste like lamb what so ever. I finished my meal with an espresso and Crème Brulee, which was not creamy at all but had more of a cottage cheese consistency. I was disappointed buy the food, but the staff was nothing but nice and accommodating. The vibe was very chill and the music was perfect.
Food was mediocre, especially brunch fried chicken and waffles. Chicken had two wing pieces and two regular size drumsticks; hardly enough for the price and no white meat. Waffles were to have tasso in them; if they did it was untasteable. Finally, syrup was not offered in plentiful way, only one small tin cup per meal. Price/Value/Taste ratio was way off. Not going here again for brunch.
