Welcome to Citron & Rose Tavern & Market. We are a community restaurant, bar and market serving the residents of Greater Philadelphia and Main Line suburban. We are glatt kosher, under the supervision of the Community Kashrus of Greater Philadelphia (Keystone-K).
The restaurant is a re-opening and re-imagining of Citron & Rose, the restaurant launched in 2012 by Philadelphia philanthropist David Magerman and James Beard Award-winning chef, Michael Solomonov. The new incarnation of C&R has a broad American menu with traditional comfort food, great steaks, bar food, and a delicious non-dairy dessert menu. We also have a large bar stocked with local beers on tap, specialty cocktails, and a broad selection of wine and liquor.

We made this reservation for my husband's birthday. We had to wait about 40 minutes after our reservation to be seated. One of the appetizers was excellent (tuna with smoked salmon). The hummus and baba were bland. For the main courses, they had run out out of the duck. Only the salmon main course was good, but who goes to a fleishig restaurant for the fish? My husband splurged and ordered the rib-eye steak, which is expensive. It came about a half-hour after everyone else's main meal, so all of us had finished eating long before his main meal arrived. Someone from the kitchen came out, twice, to tell us that they had to "thaw" extra beef, so I guess it had been frozen. Bad sign. Then the waiter brought out two pieces of heavy, brown stuff that was certainly not rib-eye (this website won't upload our photo of his dish). By then, we had been in C&R Tavern for almost three hours. Our daughter had to leave right after my husband's main meal arrived, because she had an early day at work the next morning (which is why we'd made an early reservation). I've never seen my husband not finish a beef meal. He ate maybe a tenth of it, chewing hard. The next morning, he told me he had been up several times that night with, umm, intestinal problems. My husband has a stomach of iron. I've never seen him have any troubles anywhere before. We strongly support kosher food in our area. We buy only kosher meat, wine, &c for our home. I hope someone straightens out this restaurant. The Jewish Community deserves better. We'd had great meals at the old Citron & Rose, and we've eaten at Wolf & Lamb in NYC and other great places. Excellent kosher food can be done. Come to our house and we'll show you. My husband is a great cook. As he says: how hard is it to prepare a great rib-eye? Buy a great rib-eye and don't over cook it. Done. The kosher counters at Acme and Giant sell them, by the way. Next birthday....
I really wanted to like the place. The old Citron and Rose with the original chef was legendary. We were desperately hoping for a good kosher option. Ordered falafel for an appetizer. Not sure what it was, but it was not falafel. Came with a hot spicy sauce which, while good, would never be served with falafel. My wife had a burger for her main. The actual burger was good, but the roll was so greasy that she could barely hold it and it fell apart. I ordered the smokehouse chicken. It was roast chicken which tasted like it had been made several days ago and had barbeque sauce (which was actually quite good) slopped all over it.
Unfortunately, will never go back.
Food was very good quality, tasty- Snitzel which was chicken, not veal and nicely seasoned vegetable rice casserole. It's a la carte and pricey. This is kosher food. The place was very noisy and nothing to look at. The wait staff were not well trained and inconsistent. There were large groups of people with lots of screeching babies and young children. The Tempranillo was excellent.
The restaurant was so noisy, I had to scream to talk to the person next to me. I had hoped for a night out for a special occasion but we couldn't talk to one another over the noise. It took quite a while for someone to even come over and ask us if we wanted drinks. The food didn't have much taste, there was no salt or spicing on the paella for example. Also, the menu said the paella had fava beans but had none, only peas. We also had to ask about desserts, they were not offered. I have never given a "bad" review to a restaurant before but I so want to support any orthodox community so I think it's important you guys improve.
They try really hard but serving staff are all mixed up. We stood at the Maitre D's stand for 5 min while they were on the phone taking an order before someone bothered to notice us. We were brought our starters twice: once to start and again a second time with our meal. Three different waiters and at least 2 different staff interrupted us numerous times to ask how our meal was (it was a freakin' burger, not like we ordered ragyu beef!). We ordered our meat cooked med/rare to medium and got it well done instead and had no time to send it back for a re-do. The best part of this restaurant is its location in Mainline Philly (easy to find and good parking in back) and its ambience, which is frankly the only thing we can recommend.
Slow. If you want a very leisurely lunch say almost 2 hours for an appetizer and two delicious salads then this is the place for you. Everyone was very friendly but a service training course would definitely benefit the wait staff, the manager and the customers. $11 for eight onion rings seems pricey to me but I guess it's worth it for people who want to keep kosher.
We chose C&R to celebrate a very special occasion. We were very pleased with the attentive and pleasant service. We ordered onion soup, lamb chops and steak, but were quite disappointed since everything was extremely salty. Prices were moderate when compared to NYC steak restaurants. This would have been a tremendous value, especially for us New Yorkers, had the chef been more attentive to the food preparation.
The food and the service were quite good. The remodeled restaurant and bar are attractive to look at, but the hard surfaces and low ceiling make it noisy. Too noisy for my party of three, two of whom have hearing difficulties. It's lively, and I'd recommend it to "the younger set."
The ambiance was very nice. The prices were way too high. $15-18 for a glass of wine! I don't think so. I had a chicken brushetta sandwich that was supposed to be on a garlic baguette. It wasn't. $22 for a mediocre chicken sandwich. My cousin ordered a rib eye steak which she said was very good but I could have purchased at least 2 kosher steaks for the price they charged. We were celebrating her birthday and the waiter was oblivious to bringing out a sliver of dessert to celebrate.

Nothing good about our experience. Even though the restaurant wasn't crowded, the service was very slow and they messed up the drink and dinner orders. The menu is very limited, there are no salad options and the food was rather bland. The décor was pretty sleek, but the ambience is cold and uninviting. At least there is free parking.
Some food was overcooked and most of it was uninteresting; service was poor - forgetting parts of orders, serving entrees to the wrong people, bringing different sides than had been ordered. Altogether an unimpressive experience. It has only been open for a few weeks, and that may explain the low level of service and mediocre food quality, but we won't be back to try it again.
We had a huge problem: this past Sunday was the first time I and my family tried Citron and Rose; we live in different states (Maryland and NewJersey), so we thought we'd try a new place in the middle. The big draw is that it is kosher. We were interested in a meat restaurant. The website said that the restaurant opened at 11 am. I made a reservation for a party of 6 for noon. We were celebrating a birthday. However, when we arrived, the restaurant was closed! Checking with the staff at the back door, we were told they weren't opening until 2 pm!! They had failed to update the website or reservation system! Meanwhile, we were very hungry. They said we could call the manager, but that wouldn't solve our problem - tjeu couldn't accommodate us by opening any earlier. We never did find out why they decided to open 3 hours later than they were supposed to. We had to kill time until they opened. We were told that we could go to another restaurant owned by the same owner, but we were t interested in dairy or eggs. So we drove to a park nearby To kill time All of us had driven 1.5 - 2 hrs to get to the restaurant. It was a major inconvenience. We went back to the restaurant when it opened. By that time, we were all extremely hungry, esp the birthday person, who hadn't eaten breakfast. Service was okay, but not fantastic - we had to ask a couple of times for things we'd ordered or ice. The waitstaff seemed nice enough. We were put at a large table away from the rest of the diners in the main area, which enhanced our experience. Food: the birthday person ordered rack of lamb, yet we were informed that they didn't have that. Should have told us when menus were handed out. One person ordered the chicken pot pie - it was a disaster - completely liquid under the crust! We liked the appetizers best - the onion rings, sauce, and wings were the best. Birthday person got a complimentary dessert, and bottle of prosecco was given to the group free to make up for the inconvenience
I heard such good things about this place and we were visiting philly, I wasn't so impressed with the restaurant. It was ok main dish but the appetizer was good and the waitress was very pleasant. The service took a very long time for us to get our food though.
What a disappointment! Just because it is kosher, is it necessary to be a dump, overpriced,terrible service. We had to ask for our side dish 3 times and it arrived AFTER dinner. Any other restaurant would have taken it off the bill. I will make sure my other kosher friends never have dinner there. How do you dare charge those prices?
C & R is an excellent dinner restaurant, mainly a "steak house" but serving a number of fish, poultry and vegan options. It is kosher, but not "your grandmom's oldtime" dinner. The food was well prepared and served. The wait staff was attentive, cordial, welcoming, and informative. The only down-side is the limited hours: Wednesday and Thursday 5:30 to 10:00 and Sunday 5:30 to 9:00. Reservations are advised.
Food was amazing. Everything we ordered was perfect. However food took FOREVER to come out. Didnt complain but it was so bad that they offered us dessert on the house. That improved the experience and although food is pricey would return for special occasion.
this is a wonderful meat kosher restaurant with pleasant ambiance and friendly staff. The food is delicious and the wine selection is also extensive. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a neighborhood restaurant….not overly fancy , and very good food.
I ate at C&R before it was very good. However this time the Delmonico steak was overdone and very small for the 65 dollar price!!! We sent it back and ordered 10 oz steak which was delicious. The braised ribs were also overdone and not. Should have sent it back but didnt
While the hospitality on a recent visit was very good, and the atmosphere quite nice, the prices all the way around were WAY too high.
I was amazed to spend 12. for a garden salad, which while tasty, was not a lot more than spring mix with a few little beet morsels and craisins added. Same for a bowl of tomato vegetable soup; tasty but 12. is too much for a simple veggie soup.
The braised brisket entrée was 42., and although well-prepared, not a lot of food. I was at a table of all ladies, and it seemed like the gentlemen sitting next to us were served larger portions on large oval plates. I thought I was imagining it, but someone else at my table mentioned it too...that seemed pretty discriminatory.
The desserts were pretty good, but again at 10., overpriced and not amazing.
I did appreciate the extra effort made by the host, the chef, and the wait staff to make sure we got a table on a busy night, and were very friendly and hospitable. I will be sure to limit my visits to VERY SPECIAL OCCASIONS only.
Food tasty as usual except the empanadas were clearly over-cooked; surprised they even let them come out that way. Thought the host to be a little less than accommodating in that he insisted on seating us right next to another couple despite a number of open (two-person) tables where we could have had a bit more privacy; he claimed that he had to keep them open for reservations but not a single table was filled during our dinner as I recall. Lastly, very glad we left as "trivia night" or whatever that was was starting; I was looking for a nice quiet dinner with my wife and found that to be loud and obnoxious.
We had a splendid 23rd anniversary dinner at Philadelphia area C&R Kitchen, an informal kosher steakhouse. The place was comfortably crowded on the Sunday evening we ate there. A brief liquid wait at the bar and we were ushered to our table for two. The menu isn't particularly extensive but we found plenty of yummy choices. The service was good and the food great. We ate delicious steaks (Delmonico & Ribeye). I can recommend C&R without hesitation.
