concept of grilling over a wood-fire resonates deep within the American culture,
and our guests have a firsthand view of the show. An impressive wood-fired
grill that incorporates the use of native hard and fruitwoods is the anchor of the
restaurant space, kitchen, and menu. At its core, Citizen Rail is a restaurant that
connects with the soul and fulfills Denver’s desire for restaurants & bars that are
genuine, authentic and reflect the true passion of the artisans behind the stoves.

We had reservations for Easter brunch and when we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated in the bar area (with every other patron in the restaurant). Citizen Rail did not publish they were only offering a buffet for the holiday. It was the saddest buffet I've ever seen. And, it was $35pp. We left and went to our favorite restaurant instead.
We made a reservation to have brunch on Easter Sunday over 2 weeks ahead of time and when I decided to make reservation with Citizen Rail, the only thing I saw on their website was their regular brunch menu. When we arrived on Easter Sunday, they had decided to only offer an Easter Brunch Buffet. Generally, we do not like buffets because the food is never as good as made to order and we cannot eat enough to justify the price of a buffet. In this case, the buffet was very underwhelming and overpriced ($35 pp) for what was offered. There was no made-to-order omelets, carving stations...not even an Easter spiral ham. I wished we had just got up and left like we saw other couples around us do. We didn’t because I thought other restaurants of the same caliber would require a reservation and so we stayed. I do want to try Citizen Rail again but for their regular menu.
Easter brunch was a sad small buffet for $35 per person that included a tray of pastries that looked like it was from my most recent stay at a budget hotel, half eaten fruit tray, scrambled eggs, scrambled egg whites, biscuits and gravy, and very fatty poorly cooked lamb. Nothing special. No carving station. Such a very sad disappointment. Wish I would’ve gone next-door
I gave good review because food and service was good but I was disappointed in menu . It was very limited and pretty pricey for what was offered . I was also very disappointed that the day before reservation I was called to verify reservation and that was when I was told regular menu not being served and it was a buffet. Put me in a spot as really no way I could make alternative plans ! So I had mixed feelings about experience
The easter buffet was excellent. The lamb was superb!
Restaurant atmosphere and cleanliness were pretty good overall. Limited seafood/fish options for entrees, which is what I was looking for. My husband got the bison steak, which was very good. HOWEVER, a couple things to note: I ordered a burger *medium* - it came out pretty rare. So did my husband's steak, which he also ordered *medium*. The server was very understanding and removed the burger from the bill without issue. The only reason this wasn't a five star experience, is because we dined there for an hour and a half, and the restaurant was only at 75% capacity, and not all that busy. The kitchen seemed to struggle to keep up with getting food out in a timely manner, and then the snafu with food temp. Other than that, service was courteous.
Date night with the wife. We’ve been twice now, this time tried both some vegetarian entrees and an aged NY strip. The meal was superb. We’ve have the same waiter on both visits- Billy is great, always helps us navigate the best options on the menu depending on our mood. Will definitely return when we’re in town again!
What a great find! First trip to this section of Denver. Very creative menu, and great ambience. Perfect for "date night," or after work get together.
I usually have the short rib but decided to switch up and have the “ribeye” which is in scare quotes because the cut of meat that I was served looked and tasted more like a round steak. How does a “ribeye” manage to be both flimsy and full of gristle? Special shout out to my server who noticed barely half the steak eaten and never once inquired about our satisfaction. How bad was it? Bad enough to sour me on returning to Citizen Rail any time soon. I’m shook, I’ll be finding my steak fix elsewhere for a while.
Excellent food and service!
We came here for our anniversary! Very knowledgeable and friendly waiter! We enjoyed our experience!
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!!!!! The Grilled oysters are out of this world!! For brunch the spicy hominy was amazing. You will not be disappointed.
Date went very well I got laid
Food was great and our waiter was excellent.
Waitress was a little weird but we had an amazing dinner. With the Denver Passbook it only cost $60 and we got a lot of yummy food! The rack of lamb, bison steak, octopus appetizer, and duckfat roasted potatoes were our favorites. Thank you!!!
We went for dinner on our vacation from Chicago. The food was really good, the service was excellent!
The food was delicious. Well cooked and presented. The service was lovely and thoughtful. He was kind and funny and attentive.
Excellent selection of appetizers and entrees-very knowledgeable waitstaff. Preparations were interesting and delicious!
The food wasn’t the best, especially for the price. The service was really good though. And the ambiance was nice. I would suggest to maybe just go for a light snack and/or a cocktail.
The service and food were excellent. But the noise level made it difficult to hold a conversation.
Our waitress was excellent, suggesting beers to fit our tastes and very attentive. She immediately noticed when our last guest arrived and brought out an entree she was keeping warm for him. The food was great, unique and tasty.
Favorite restaurant in Denver!
Absolutely fabulous experience!!! Loved the look of the restaurant, our waiter a true professional and the food was right on point. The bone-in short ribs were absolutely the best I’ve ever had!!! We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Denver.
Every Bite we put in our mouth was an explosion of flavor! Wonderful food!!! Highly recommend!
We had gone to Citizen Rail the last couple of times we stayed in Denver and liked it because it offered something for myself and my daughters (vegan) as well as my husband who is a meat eater so we were excited to go again. This time, I ordered the one vegan entree and when it showed up it was basically just a huge plate of roasted cauliflower. Seriously? You can't come up with anything more creative? I ate like a fourth of it and got bored. My husband didn't like his bison steak - said flavor was off and it came with like grape jam on it. My daughter didn't like her hummus and when I tried it I had to agree it made me queasy and my other daughter just had the kid's salad which didn't even come with dressing. The waiter - a woman not sure of her name - was great. No problems there. It was just the food.
Service was outstanding! Food was good and had a great presentation. Enjoyed the open kitchen.
Great meal and wonderful service. They treated us so well and the food was amazing. Highly recommend and looking forward to the next meal soon
We're delighted to see that you had a great meal and wonderful service! We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Get the pastries! Have a Cocktail! Delight in the creative and tasty entrees! So many good things to say about this restaurant. We all loved the food and service. Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Our favorites were the Biscuits & Gravy, the Fritters, and the Pop Tart. You’ll thank yourself though you will want to try everything!!
Can't go wrong with anything on the menu is an amazing thing to read! We're so glad you enjoyed brunch at Citizen Rail and look forward to seeing you again soon!
We were a little to close to the entrance and could feel the draft, which became less noticeable as the restaurant filled up. Very attentive and well trained service staff. My husband had the mushroom consomme and I the butter lettuce salad for starters. My salad was excellent, a refreshing combination of organic butter lettuce, apple and pear slices, with blue cheese and candied walnuts. I ordered the tuna, which was nicely seasoned and my husband had the rack of lamb, also nicely seasoned. The portions were more than satisfying but we managed to share a dessert of chocolate ganache filled cake with ice cream on the side, yummy. Entree prices were perhaps on the high end, but the quality of the food, presentation, and service warranted it.
Hefty price tag for mediocre food.
I had the chicken that was supposed to come with bbq sauce. Couldnt taste the bbq sacue. Cauliflower puree was bland. The chicken was bone in, which made it messy for eating. Came with a few sliced radishes, 3 sun choke chips and 5 peices of dried pomegranate. It was 30$. No carb or green with it, thats an extra 10$ on the side.
Dont waste your money.
Monica, we're disappointed to see that we did not meet your expectations when you dined with us. We've made sure to share your notes with our culinary team and appreciate feedback from our guests so that we can improve. We hope you will give us another try in the future.
We stopped in the bar for pre dinner drinks. Best gin & tonic I had in a long time! So yummy with a sprig of rosemary! Bartender was not overly friendly, but they were busy. He also broke a glass and spilled my water when giving us the check. He comp'd the drinks and was very apologetic. On to dinner:
Food was fabulous, service was not that great. Waiter did not check up on us and neglected to fill water glasses in a timely manner. Never got the side of asparagus we ordered. Short rib was so delicious! Presentation of the food was beautiful. The Pimm's Cup drink was out of this world!
Hostess was super friendly and even came and took us to our table. Not sure with all the amazing food we have in Denver if I would go back unless they upped the level of service.
Kathi, it's great to see that you enjoyed the gin and tonics and food was fabulous! We're sorry to see that service fell short of expectations. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent service and we are sorry that was not your experience. We hope you will give us another try sometime soon!
First, our server Van was a Rock Star! The food was excellent, the bison strip and the short rib was delicious. We engaged with the chefs in some friendly banter and drooled over the dry aged beef for the next visit!
Tom, it's wonderful to see that you had an excellent meal at Citizen Rail. Van is a fantastic server, thank you for sharing that he was rock star with you! We look forward to seeing you for some dry aged beef soon!
There are lots of restaurants with similar menus that are less expensive and have better ambiance

The mussels were delicious and John and Cory at the bar were great.

The chilaquiles where different but tasteful, great place
Great spot for lunch. A friend and I went and we were torn between two options - when we said we could taste each other's choice, the waitress immediately asked if we wanted to split the two dishes. The grilled escarole salad was a great mix of fresh flavors and texture.
Mary, it's wonderful to see that you enjoyed a great lunch at Citizen Rail! Please join us again soon!
Wonderful waitstaff and they really went out of their way to make a birthday celebration special.
Kbou, We're so happy to hear you enjoyed your birthday celebration at Citizen Rail! We hope you're able to join us again soon!
Overall an excellent experience. The service was outstanding! Our server was very attentive but did not hover, which was perfect. My husband and daughter ordered the Tomahawk steak which was not tender at all and so after a few bites they stopped eating it. The manager offered to replace their entrees but my husband said that wouldn’t be necessary. The manager took it off our bill even though we hadn’t asked them to do that. Amazing customer service! The rest of the meal was delicious and we enjoyed our drinks as well- they make the best Lemon Drop I’ve ever had! We definitely recommend Citizen Rail.
Diana, it's wonderful to see that service was outstanding and you had amazing customer service. We're disappointed that the tomahawk steak did not meet your expectations but glad that the rest of the meal was delicious. We hope you are able to join us again soon!
