About Circa 1886
Chef Marc Collins draws inspiration from many cuisines around the world to create a menu that is truly unique to the Charleston restaurant scene. Drawing inspiration from historic Southern dishes and always highlighting what is local and in season, Chef Collins puts a healthful, distinctive spin on classic Lowcountry dishes. This means there is less butter and cream than typically seen on Southern menus. Whole grains are incorporated to dishes and ingredients are used at the peak of flavor. The result is satisfying dishes that retain their bright, bold flavors without the large amounts of fat found in many restaurant dishes. From our Plantation Rice Bread Rolls made in house daily, to the selection of local seafood, to Pastry Chef Lovorn’s incredible desserts, each dinner at Circa 1886 celebrates the region we call home. Let our professional, attentive, experienced and knowledgeable staff guide you through the menu and help select a wine that is a perfect pairing for food and budget.

Circa 1886 Ratings and Reviews
Our waiter, Austin was an excellent server that was very knowledgeable about the restaurant and everything they offered on the menu. The meal was the best that we have had since moving to south Carolina four years ago and very reasonable. We will definitely be back .
It took us 20 minutes to find circa 1886, although it’s right behind the Wentworth mansion, the restaurant address plate is SO TINY .... you cannot see it in the dark .
But the dessert was worth the 20 minute walk in the dark unlit streets .....the best dessert we have eaten EVER !
My only complaint was that I had to eat the delicious dessert after eating the “ melt in your mouth “ delicious Foie gras , which made it hard for me to finish the dessert .
I would go back again just for the dessert !
We were blown away by the service, quality of the food, presentation, and atmosphere at Circa 1886. We started with drinks at the cozy bar area. The cocktails featured house made ingredients and it was evident the bartender was quite knowledgeable in mixology. For dinner, I had trout and my husband tried antelope, the chef’s signature dish. Both dishes were beautifully presented and expertly cooked. We finished with a sophisticated take on smores. The dessert included flourless chocolate cake, homemade roasted marshmallows and graham crackers, and ice cream to tie it all together. It was plenty to share. Our server was great; she knew the menu very well and was able to answer all our questions. The restaurant is outside the main tourist district, but well worth the walk or Uber if you are traveling without a car. We will make a point to come back the next time we are in Charleston.
Let me preface by saying, we are from out of town. Even with a GPS in my car, I had a difficult time locating the restaurant. It is really tucked away. Once discovered, it is a gem! The service, fare, and ambiance are terrific. A beautiful venue, very competentently staffed and extremely well provisioned equaled a fantastic dining experience.
Four of us ate here for my birthday and Austin was our outstanding waiter. While he was very pleasant, he wasn't stuffy and joked along with us all evening. The food as usual was excellent. I had the chicken which was a hidden gem. I normally don't order chicken at a fine dining restaurant but this was, without a doubt, the best chicken I can recall. Everyone at the table had a bite and agreed. Chicken-fried salmon was outstanding as was the beef. My dessert, Waffle Haus, was complete with bacon and egg ice cream and candied bacon on top. Delicious. The only thing that was slightly above average (according to my companions) was the pumpkin souffle. They said it didn't have a lot of pumpkin flavor though it was good. Another memorable dinner at this wonderful restaurant.
Overall a perfect dining experience. This lovely carriage house tucked behind The Wentworth Mansion is well suited for a date or special occasion. From the amuse bouches through dessert each course is presented beautifully, creative and delicious! The scallop appetizer with blood orange gastrique was well composed and a delight to look at. The beet salad was nice with iberico ham and goat cheese veloute.
Lamb was perfectly cooked and tender and all the components in my husband's chicken dish were great- he loved it!
Pineapple cake dessert was amazing with coconut sherbet, brûléed pineapple and banana and tropical salsa YUM! I highly recommend this for people who appreciate fine food. When I go back to Charleston I would love to return for Chef Collin's fabulous cuisine.
Circa was recommended by a friend as a place not to be missed. He was not wrong. My wife had rainbow trout, had many yummy sauces, spices etc. perfectly prepared. I had the antelope, a first for me. Perfectly cooked, incredible crust/char outside, tender tasty meat on the inside. Some like venison , but not strong.
Keeping this from a five star was the broquiny, a green NASTY veggie, the only taste was vinegar. Everything else was perfect
Service was and always is 5 star. You never feel rushed and the special little nibbles from chef make you feel valued. I gave 4 stars for the food because I felt that the proteins were a little over cooked with the exception of the duck.... it was amazing !
My wife and I save going to Circa 1886 for special occasions. Because Circa 1886 is a special occasion! The food is always creatively delicious and the wine list excellent. The servers are well informed as to each offering on the menu. We shared the wedge salad. My wife enjoyed the antelope and I loved the rainbow trout. We finished our special meal with the pumpkin souffle and port. We may have to think of more "special occasions."
Dinner was part of a week long 30th wedding anniversary extravaganza. We had a 6:15 pm reservation which garnered us a lovely booth. The chef began with two l’agniappes. Our server was a very experienced server; I believe most of the servers are professional servers. They offered me gluten free bread, which I appreciated. We began with pork belly. A friend sugggested we try it, and it was delicious. Nothing like I would have imagined. Each bite had some pork, sort of the consistency of pulled pork but much richer in flavor and so much more tender, and the fat part of the pork piece just made the mouthful more delicious and juicy. I enjoyed the Broken Arrow Antelope entree. Again, a first for me. It was better than filet mignon- tender, flavorful (not gamey at all), yummy with the blackberry barbecue sauce and the accompaniments. My husband had the filet mignon, which was excellent, but I think he enjoyed the antelope as much or better! We had chosen the pumpkin soufflé for dessert when we were ordering our meal since soufflés need to be made on the spot, but all of their desserts are prepared fresh to order. We also had the S’mores dessert. It was better than anything I have ever had camping out. It was a memorable meal, not rushed, elegant dining room that enabled us to have a conversation without screaming at one another, perfect food. It may seem pricey at first, but the whole experience was worth it!
We always dine in local restaurants when possible. Circa is amazing - the menu was very eclectic, the food amazing & we had an awesome waitress - Kaitlin (Caitlin?). Chef prepared some seasonal dishes & samples were included & feedback returned to the kitchen. We could not have been more pleased with this birthday celebration. If unfamiliar with the area, may be a little confusing to find if walking from the Historic district, but should not be missed.
Had our anniversary and the next table were celebrating their birthday and our waiter was wonderful and the food was excellent our table was in the middle of traffic in the dining room that there were no other options for tables for a party of six it was located in and a renovated Carriagehouse we will definitely go back and we have raving reviews for anybody
Perfect venue for date night. Circa is a fantastic restaurant that’s tucked away in the heart of Charleston. The food is exceptional with top-notch service to match. While waiting for your food you’ll be treated to some tastings compliments of the chef to arouse the taste buds. As a regular, I can say with confidence that everything on the menu is absolutely delicious.
