About Circa 1886
Chef Marc Collins draws inspiration from many cuisines around the world to create a menu that is truly unique to the Charleston restaurant scene. Drawing inspiration from historic Southern dishes and always highlighting what is local and in season, Chef Collins puts a healthful, distinctive spin on classic Lowcountry dishes. This means there is less butter and cream than typically seen on Southern menus. Whole grains are incorporated to dishes and ingredients are used at the peak of flavor. The result is satisfying dishes that retain their bright, bold flavors without the large amounts of fat found in many restaurant dishes. From our Plantation Rice Bread Rolls made in house daily, to the selection of local seafood, to Pastry Chef Lovorn’s incredible desserts, each dinner at Circa 1886 celebrates the region we call home. Let our professional, attentive, experienced and knowledgeable staff guide you through the menu and help select a wine that is a perfect pairing for food and budget.

Circa 1886 Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I save going to Circa 1886 for special occasions. Because Circa 1886 is a special occasion! The food is always creatively delicious and the wine list excellent. The servers are well informed as to each offering on the menu. We shared the wedge salad. My wife enjoyed the antelope and I loved the rainbow trout. We finished our special meal with the pumpkin souffle and port. We may have to think of more "special occasions."
Dinner was part of a week long 30th wedding anniversary extravaganza. We had a 6:15 pm reservation which garnered us a lovely booth. The chef began with two l’agniappes. Our server was a very experienced server; I believe most of the servers are professional servers. They offered me gluten free bread, which I appreciated. We began with pork belly. A friend sugggested we try it, and it was delicious. Nothing like I would have imagined. Each bite had some pork, sort of the consistency of pulled pork but much richer in flavor and so much more tender, and the fat part of the pork piece just made the mouthful more delicious and juicy. I enjoyed the Broken Arrow Antelope entree. Again, a first for me. It was better than filet mignon- tender, flavorful (not gamey at all), yummy with the blackberry barbecue sauce and the accompaniments. My husband had the filet mignon, which was excellent, but I think he enjoyed the antelope as much or better! We had chosen the pumpkin soufflé for dessert when we were ordering our meal since soufflés need to be made on the spot, but all of their desserts are prepared fresh to order. We also had the S’mores dessert. It was better than anything I have ever had camping out. It was a memorable meal, not rushed, elegant dining room that enabled us to have a conversation without screaming at one another, perfect food. It may seem pricey at first, but the whole experience was worth it!
We always dine in local restaurants when possible. Circa is amazing - the menu was very eclectic, the food amazing & we had an awesome waitress - Kaitlin (Caitlin?). Chef prepared some seasonal dishes & samples were included & feedback returned to the kitchen. We could not have been more pleased with this birthday celebration. If unfamiliar with the area, may be a little confusing to find if walking from the Historic district, but should not be missed.
Had our anniversary and the next table were celebrating their birthday and our waiter was wonderful and the food was excellent our table was in the middle of traffic in the dining room that there were no other options for tables for a party of six it was located in and a renovated Carriagehouse we will definitely go back and we have raving reviews for anybody
Perfect venue for date night. Circa is a fantastic restaurant that’s tucked away in the heart of Charleston. The food is exceptional with top-notch service to match. While waiting for your food you’ll be treated to some tastings compliments of the chef to arouse the taste buds. As a regular, I can say with confidence that everything on the menu is absolutely delicious.
Our waitress, Kaitlyn, was genuinely enthusiastic about the menu & did a great job helping us make our selections (lamb loin & antelope were superb, as were the scallop appetizer & light, yummy pumpkin soufflé). Intermezzo a delicious, not too sweet cocktail. From the sage dinner rolls w/ orange butter to the two amuse-bouche (butternut squash soup drizzled w/ white truffle oil was our fav), we felt so pampered & vowed to return to Circa 1886 on our next visit to Charleston. To top it off, I had forgotten my reading glasses. Sharing my disappointment in not being able to read the menu, Kaitlyn didn't miss a beat, offering me use of several pairs of readers left behind by previous diners . Now THAT's exceptional service! Try Circa 1886. You won't be disappointed.
With all of the great restaurants in Charleston, sometimes it's hard to identify one that is above the rest. It took us 4 years in Charleston to finally visit Circa 1886, but WOW!!!!! This restaurant is without peers. Yes, everyone has a favorite, however, after dining here, it will become everyone's favorite. The chef has prepared one of the most creative menu's to ever be seen in a restaurant. This will become our restaurant of choice, and one we will take friends to (especially if we want to impress someone)!
We were beyond satisfied from the time we walked in until we left. Our server Dennis was very knowledgeable and helpful. The service was excellent and he kept bringing surprises for us to sample. We started with the scallops and they were HUGE and very tasty. My wife had the crab cakes and they are big and full of crab. I had the lamb and it melted in my mouth. The sides were perfect. We ended with dessert...my wife had the sorbet and I had the pineapple cake. They were both excellent. We really enjoyed our date might. Thanks Dennis and Chef :-)
Amazing experience!! Not only was the food supurb but the atmosphere alone was enough of an experience! Tucked behind a marvellous mansion the whole resturant has a wonderful vibe about it!! The staff was lovely and made a huge impression on us! For dining reference this experience is not one that can be rushed. It is truly a three course meal and you need to have enough time to enjoy (if you have plans after make sure you have ample time)!! We will return for sure!
Food was amazing. Service was incredible. There was a table of 5 that was a little loud, but luckily we were far enough away that it wasn't a real issue. Once they left the atmosphere was definitely more romantic, but in no way do we blame the restaurant! Our server Sarah was fantastic. We are definitely going back before we head home.
Impeccable service and excellent cuisine in a charming yet elegant setting. My husband and I both tried dishes that were new to us. He had the antelope which was tender and perfectly seasoned, while I enjoyed the chef’s 5-course special. The desserts were exquisite! We were not disappointed in our selections and highly recommend Circa 1886 for a special evening out.
The restaurant is beautiful, the ambiance is very relaxing and up-scale. Our waitress was very nice and adequate, but did not offer any extra information that we over-heard other wait staff offering on food choices and historic extras. The food was delicious and I would definitely recommend it and will go back.
We had our anniversary dinner here, everything was amazing. The staff was unbelievably friendly and we felt totally pampered the entire time. I had the chicken fried salmon, shut the front door amazing! Our drinks were perfectly poured and the creme brulee for desert, again amazing. We don't live in SC, but wished we could visit this place more often.
Had the 5 course Chef's Tasting Menu with the wine pairing which was delicious and allowed us try several menu items and wines. The beet salad with Iberico ham and goat cheese veloute was one of my favorites, the salmon over grits with a corn sauce was also very good. For dessert we were served the pumpkin souffle which was light and airy and showcased the flavors of fall. Service seemed a little off at times, but nothing worth complaining about.
Celebrating our anniversary at Circa was as much the right thing to do as when we said "I Do" to each other, 43 years ago.
The only regret would be it is located in Charleston as opposed to us living in Asheville NC. Circa is the perfect compliment to staying at the Wentworth Mansion Inn.

Cannot say anything more about Circa 1886. One of the best meals I've had ever!!! We frequent Charleston and this is one to not miss. Anne, our server was amazing. As my husband said, this wasn't a meal but an experience. Thank you Circa 1886 for making our anniversary so memorable.
Our server, Charles was wonderful. My date got the lamb and I asked Charles to pick something for me - as everything looked good. I got the antelope - something I likely wouldn't have picked for myself and it was AMAZING! We also had the pumpkin soufflé which was yummy!
