The menu is so unique. It allows you to sample different foods from various cultures allowing for a true tasting adventure!
Wonderful from beginning to end. We love the menu--hard to choose among so many great options. Good wine, great food , great service.
Our dinner at Circa 1886 was an outstanding experience. We have eaten at many restaurants in Charleston over the years, and this meal was one of the best. First, the ambiance set the mood for the evening from the walk through the garden and into the beautiful and elegant restaurant space. Second, the staff and servers were so friendly, professional, and exceptionally efficient. Finally, the food was amazing. The flavor, presentation, and creativity made this a truly memorable meal. We would highly recommend this Charleston gem.
My husband had the red hen and said it was the best chicken EVER! Each choice we made was memorable. One of the finest restaurants in Charleston in the spectacular Wentworth Mansion. We also stayed there and service was superb. We will return.
What a lovely experience to celebrate my birthday. Chef was even able to accommodate a gluten free diet.
Chef Marc Collins has prepared a fabulous international menu. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Circa 1886, as we have done in the past. It is an amazing restaurant with creative & delicious food and impeccable service and ambiance. We highly recommend dining here!
Meets expectations from ratings it has. The whole experience was first class and was great being able to walk over from staying at the wonderful mansion.
I wanted to treat my girlfriend to a fine dining experience while we were on vacation in Charleston. The variety of Circa 1886's menu helped it stand out online, but we were not prepared for how fabulous this experience would truly be. The restaurant is situated in the former carriage house of one of the most beautiful historic homes in Charleston, and its ambiance provided for a fabulous dining experience. Our server, Anthony, was helpful, informative, and courteous from the time we sat down until when we walked out of the door. The food itself was thoughtfully prepared and presented, and it truly seems like there is not a "wrong" choice to make on their menu. While probably the most expensive dinner I have ever paid for, the quality atmosphere, service, and food made it worth every penny. I would recommend this wonderful restaurant to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Charleston.
The restaurant was very quaint although we had a little difficulty finding the entrance. The parking lot directly in front of the entrance is not for restaurant patrons. As they stated on their website you have to park in the surrounding neighborhood which is an eclectic mix of nice homes, apartments primarily rented by students and what appears to be low income housing down the street. The ambiance was good if you are looking for a place just to have a nice dinner. I would not say it was romantic since the tables are in a large dining room. There were 3 booths which would probably make the dining experience more romantic but as I said there were only three. So unless you get one I would not recommend proposing to your sweetheart here. The food was good but I expected amazing due to the reviews, price and location. I have dined at other restaurants and the food was better and not as expensive.
Wow. Starters were great, but entrees just okay (wouldn’t even say they were “good”), and the “savory” dessert from the Native American side of the tasting menus was one of the worst-tasting dishes I’ve ever had. Hands down the worst dessert I’ve ever had. Maybe that’s on me for ordering it, but I realized, after listening to a different waiter at a neighboring table, that our waiter SEVERELY short-shrifted us in the description department. Also one of the quietest places I’ve ever dined—so quiet that we heard a table across the room chime in on another table’s order. Generally like quiet but that was library level. (Maybe because early August is off peak?) in any case, definitely not worth $180–and that’s the price tag without drinks. Next time I’ll go to FIG.
Great experience overall! The food and service was spectacular!
We were there to celebrate our 25th anniversary and it was more than we could have hoped for! Excellent food, service, and atmosphere!
I thought I had had good food over the years but after going to Circa, I now know what outstanding food is! It was mine and my wife's 37th wedding anniversary, everybody in the front of the house came to us personally called us by name and wished us a happy anniversary. Chef Chris came out from the back several times to our table to make sure everything was going well. It was the best food I've ever had in my life! We plan on going back next year. I have already recommended to all my friends over Facebook, as well as showing pictures of our food.
Wow.... WOW... My wife and my daughter were visiting Charleston for her birthday and I wanted a nice place for dinner and found Circa 1886 on OpenTable, it looked nice based on pictures but were we in for a surprise. We were quite underdressed from traveling that day and the hostess made it seem and FEEL as if it was no issue. The menu was not made for my young daughter (2yrs) but the staff said it was no problem and the Chef was able to whip up a quick bowl of pasta and sauce (fresh and it was amazing).
The menu is absolutely one of the best I have ever read from, my choices were beyond my expectations and the ingredients may have been some of the finest and freshest I have consumed. The menu is divided into four much smaller menus and suggested to be eaten in at least three courses. Each as good if not better than the first, and the time and effort to make each plate special could be seen and tasted.
Their wine and drink menu was also great and the atmosphere was one of the most romantic settings you will find in Charleston.
We have already discussed just a Mommy Daddy weekend and Circa 1886 is already in the plans.
Thank you guys!
True pleasure, every course caused conversation re how outstanding it was. Service impecible. Still savoring every bite.
Our experience at Circa 1886 was considerably better than some other restaurants we’ve tried since moving to Charleston 3 years ago. The variety of foods from different influences was wonderfully creative and delicious. We particularly loved the peanut soup and the dessert soufflé. The service was outstanding. And above all, the atmosphere was amazing. We could actually hear each other talk!
Outstanding experience! This was our third visit and they didn’t disappoint. My wife and I shared the 5 course special along with an order of the Crab dish special. The service and food were both incredible! We’ll be back again!
Such a wonderful restaurant and a great neighborhood spot
Circa 1886 is a top restaurant in Charleston, a most to dine in. Excellent food and service.
All around great dining experience with an entirely amazing menu!
Amazing and delicious cuisine and exceptional service! Atmosphere is good but interior decor maybe a little outdated and not so sophisticated as expected. But it is totally worth a visit! The food was impeccable!
First time we had been back since they changed the menu into four regional selections. We found it very interesting and we all had dishes that we liked.
Little bit bigger portions would have been nice, but, food was outstanding.
Wonderful staff ! Very knowledgeable and really made the service great. Delicious and different food ! We will be back!
Excellent meal, excellent service.
I was having a difficult time choosing between some dishes bc they all looked so amazing but our server helped us out. We chose the red hen and ther venison. Both were fabulous and we ended up sharing both. This is not an inexpensive place, but every bite is well worth it. Thank you for helping us enjoy our last night in Charleston.
Food and service was exceptional! We were so glad we ended our trip here, just fantastic! Try the peanut soup and fried green tomato salad, yummy:)
This restaurant was our favorite on our 12 day trip to the South. The menu was so creative and interesting and I loved how you could pair different options from each section. Every single item we were served was incredible. The setting is also classic and beautiful. Our server, Caitlyn, was a delight and served us with such warmth and pleasure. I wish we had a restaurant like this in our city. We would be monthly visitors. Don't miss this special Charleston experience!
My husband and I chose this amazing gem of a place after my search for local, creative cuisine. From the first time I spoke with the lovely hostess, Hailey, who guided us with getting to the restaurant we knew we’d found a special place for fine dining. The unique menu with the native inspired options accommodated my food sensitivities without sacrifice to have an outstanding meal. Our server, Caitlyn, provided the most pleasant and knowledgeable service we’ve had in quite some time. We’re hoping to return soon!
Deserves its rating as best restaurant in the state and fourth in the US! With four eclectic menu cuisines to choose from you can get a wonderful selection to try. Excellent staff and chef. Even gluten free bread that is so delicious.
Wonderful anniversary evening. Seating quickly with a nice table. Observant and welcoming staff and servers. Attentive management. One of the dishes was taken back but was made right and dessert comped. Will definitely be back as it was an overall nice experience.
Awesome and the bartender was excellent for happy hour!
Excellent service, atmosphere, and cuisine. We appreciated the attention to detail without being intrusive by the wait staff.
The food was amazing. The staff were very knowledgible about the menu. The atmosphere was pleasant. All in all an amazing experience.
Austin was phenomenal! Attentive but not intrusive. Everyone was very hospitable. We could not have asked for a better experience.
We had requested one of the booths and indicated with the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. It was so nice to find everything in order when we arrived. Everyone was so friendly and pleasant and made the experience a real joy. We especially enjoyed being served by Tanya who answered all of our questions and helped us navigate the unique menu. The food was excellent and the presentation delightful. The wine selection was very good and the soufflé amazing! I really appreciate not being rushed and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening.
Not at all a bad experience, but we thought it was a bit overpriced / overrated. We had a great and friendly server, and the drinks were nice. But the food, the main thing we cared about, was underwhelming. Not bad, but not special either, which is what we expected for the price.
What a disappointment. We had the vegetarian one pot and it was insipid. $30 for field peas and veggies- no imagination or skilled prep. The African peanut soup was OK. The roasted apple salad was very good. The soufflé was superb.
I had high expectations for this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The staff couldn’t have been more fantastic. From our greeting, to our server, to our goodbyes we felt so very well taken care of. The food was amazing, and at three courses each we were totally stuffed. It was even picky husband approved! (I was worried a bit as the menu is slightly eclectic.) Emily was our server and she really took the time to explain the dishes I was deciding between. We absolutely loved everything and will be sure to make this a high priority on our next Charleston trip. Just make sure you end your trip with this place like we did because no other level of food or service in town will compare!
