Cioppino's Ratings and Reviews
Cioppino's was our first night in San Francisco and it was a really good feed! On entering the restaurant we were welcomed in and quickly shown to our seats! Service was good as our server didn't hover but was always near if we needed something! Food was enjoyable, my wife had the seafood risotto which she wouldn't stop talking about how good it was! Overall a great night and would recommend to others!
Although the restaurant naturally attracts tourist because of its proximity to the wharf, it did not take away for our dining experience. We were seated next to the bar at a window table. We arrived early for our reservation...hostess asked for a minute to get table ready and quickly seated us. Our waiter, Rolando, was friendly and attentive. Our meals were delicious (grilled salmon, blackened salmon, cioppino, fish and chips, and clam chowder)...fresh sourdough bread, excellent! We were not disappointed!
Our family has a tradition of going to San Francisco before Christmas. The city is always beautiful, but thus time of year it truly dazzles. The past few years, we've had dinner at Cioppino's as part if our tradition. The food is wonderful, prices are reasonable, and they are well suited to accommodate our large party. This time we were taken aback, and disappointed by our reception. I made a 5 pm reservation, and we arrived a little early. The hostess who checked us in said, with a frown and a sigh, "It's 4:52. Your table isn't ready. Go sit in the bar and we'll call you."
So this review isn't about our food, which was all quite delicious: fantastic SF sourdough, creamy perfectly seasoned lobster and clam chowder, tasty seafood pasta and risotto, all chock full of seafood. Really good thin crust pizza. No. It's that greeting that put a real damper on our whole time there, and makes me think I'll look for a different restaurant next year.
the restaurant wasn't crowded. There were plenty of staff. (After that greeting when we went to wait, I saw 7 wait staff congregate at the hostess desk, and watched her seat several parties of 2 and 4. There were many open tables all through the restaurant.) It's about hospitality. Customer service and making us feel welcome from the minute we arrived. That didn't happen and I think it's unacceptable.
A waiter was delivering food and spilled a salad with balsamic vinaigrette onto my coat that was on my chair. I was in the restroom at the time. But when I returned I was very surprised on what happened. I thought for sure my night was ruined but the manager and service staff was extraordinary. They took care of the mess and my meal. The manager also offered to pay for my dry cleaning!!!
The food was outstanding btw. I recommend this place if you come to Fisherman’s Ward!
Very disappointed in the waitstaff. The hostess had a sour attitude from the moment we walked in - no smile, just grabbed menus and directed us to our seats, to her sourpuss face when we left. It gave the impression that she didn't want to be there and could care less about hiding the fact.
Our waitress didn't take the time to notice that we only had 1 place setting between the two of us. Had to ask her twice for another place setting. Then, she just seemed either forgetful or too busy to take our order.
The food, it was great. But I would think twice if I was hoping for a well-rounded experience that reflects the perception one would have of such a wonderful restaurant.
Visiting San Francisco with Family. This restaurant was recommended by a local bicycle rental shop owner. Close to the Cannery and only about 2 1/2 blocks from our Hyatt Centric hotel.
Each of the four meals was excellent. I had the Pacific Snapper and my wife had a crabmeat sandwich. I cannot remember the other two meals as there was wine involved. Excellent meal...
I would eat there regularly if I lived in San Francisco!!!
The Clam chowder was great! And everything else we ordered wss really good as well.
The service could
definetely be improved on. Our waitress seemed to be in a constant rush (despite the place not being full) and getting the waitstaff’s attention was hard. The meals did come out fast though.
Overall I would recommend that someone go if they asked, I wouldn’t consider it a “must” restaurant though.
Flew into San Francisco for a day with the girlfriend for the first time from San Diego. We're both from the east coast and haven't experienced authentic Italian food since the move, as it's not incredibly easy to find. This reminded us of our family, our heritage, and the amazing food that stems from it. Even with all of the amazing views and experiences, coming to Cioppino's was still one of our favorite parts of the vacation. Thanks for your services! I'll be coming back for more.
The atmosphere was very inviting and not too loud even with many people around. The service was terrific and it’s unfortunate that I can’t give it more stars because MY meal was amazing and very delicious but everyone that didn’t order one of the “signature” dishes (the crab, the Cioppino or the seafood feast), was quite unimpressed with their meal. They had the chicken parm and the fish and chips. That was disappointing. I’d definitely recommend this place if you plan on getting one of their delicious specialities.
Great experience. Crowded Saturday night on a holiday weekend but we were seated as soon as we checked in. Best shrimp scampi linguini I ever had...light sauce bursting with flavor, shrimp cooked perfectly. Excellent appetizers also - we had olives (buttery taste!) , crab cocktail , and bruschetta.
The food and service were good, but the restaurant was warm (a/c finally turned on when our dessert course arrived!--and the back room we were in filled completely--despite us having mentioned the heat to the waiter when we were first seated). The food was good (nothing fantastic), but a great selection for all the picky eaters in our group. Our party of 7 got seated with our reservation quickly.
It took FOREVER to get even a glass of water here! But once someone came over, the food came quickly. The cocktails were less than spectacular. The Cioppino and the sausage pizza were delicious though! It was extremely loud inside. The food was great, but everything else was just ok.
On a fairly slow night it took far too long to be served. Our appetizer was barely warm and just ok. It was a crab dip that came with only 4 skimpy pieces of bread.
Our lasagna was ok...we've had much better.
The wine, like most places in CA, was overpriced but decent.
Cioppino's turned out to be a tourist trap. I was expecting something more personalized, given that it calls itself a family owned and run restaurant, and I was expecting a somewhat more refined cuisine given the city it is in. The seafood was fresh, no doubt, but prepared with a heavy hand, and the same sides accompanied all dishes.
