Ciao Trattoria & Wine Bar
The ultimate goal of a trattoria is to serve the communities where they exist. Less formal than ristorante, a true trattoria features rustic Italian home cooking and wines in a convivial atmosphere and at an affordance price point. Young, old, rich and those not so are encouraged to make the trattorias of Italy their second homes. And at Ciao Trattoria and Wine Bar that's the atmosphere we are striving to provide as well.

They were short on help this particular night as many places seem to be lately. We were seated without much of a wait but did have to wait for our server to come with water, and there was a lengthy wait for our drinks. When the drinks came, one was good, the other not so much but I kept it and did my best, but immediately put in an order for a second round and the timing on that was great. We had as an appetizer bruschetta with ricotta, walnuts and pears, and couldn’t have been happier. It was DELICIOUS and I’m not a big fan of pears. The food came out surprisingly quickly and it was served hot, unlike many other places that use heating lamps at length. My girlfriend had the poached salmon which was pleasantly delicious, and I had the chicken parm which was also delicious. The pasta was a bit too firm for my taste but that’s a subjective thing. Noise was moderate, we passed on dessert, and both the manager and the owner separately stopped by to see how it was. You will never regret a dinner at Ciao.
Excellent food , great service, we will be back for sure !!
The food was excellent. I love their Bolognese sauce which I had with pappardelle pasta yesterday. We went early (4.30 pm) though, and sat outside around the corner to avoid the sun beating on the tables in the front. So there was no real ambience, but that was to be expected. I do recommend it, and I love the bar area and its ambience.
The salmon I had and the pork chop my partner had were delicious … we surprised at the wonderful service and the excellent meal . We will return
Skye was a wonderful server who appeared to be the only server working on a Saturday night - due to labor shortages (I feel that, I work in the industry too). She was extremely pleasant and helpful and even though she was busy never let us know that. The owners were working the floor, helping the hosts and Skye. Seems that the owners care about more than just a profit & turnover which is extremely refreshing to see. We were visiting from out of state and very happy to have stumbled upon this place. The food was excellent!!! Chicken Parm & Wild Boar Special, the chicken…..was probably the best cooked chicken I’ve ever had. Seriously, go give that head chef a big forehead kiss for me. And give Skye free shift meals forever, she deserves it.
Delightful find. Totally enjoyed our meal and the gracious owners. Great value for terrific pasta.
Great space, the staff was attentive and the food was excellent. If I had to knock anything I would say they need a bread offering other than Focaccia. It will go in our rotation of the best spots.
Ciao is consistently amazing. Pizza, family style take out or dining in, all great, highly recommended!
First time visit since this is new since we had a daughter at UNH. Easy to make reservation through open table, no wait, prompt and experienced service, table visit greetings from the owner, nice atmosphere and the best chicken parmigiana we've had in a long time!! We'll definitely be back!
The eggplant parm was incredible, and could easily pass as an entrée, the sautéed spinach was great: garlicy and crunch from breadcrumbs was an unexpected pleasure.
We're going back, and will try more pizza, and enjoy the great food as we explore our way through the menu.
Always delicious and the staff is wonderful
Adrienne is wonderful. You are so lucky to have her.
Service was a little slow but courteous and friendly. We are every bite
Beautiful bar and tables .Neat and clean. Owner came to say Hi ! Food was good but not the best we have had .Portions were on smaller side.
Everything was perfect. Always is. Love this restaurant.
The food and service were excellent. I will definitely be back.
Great service, staff was attentive, and the food tasted fresh and incredible! I recommend the broccoli for a side!!
I brought a friend there and she loved it as much as I do. I have reservations for next week with four others. Love the Peas & Proscuitto Wednesday are great for wine. I will be trying the Thursday pizza nite soon.
Great service, loved the food and the cozy atmosphere but with good distancing. (We sat in a booth) Can't wait to go back !
What a wonderful meal from start to finish, and we had the most amazing service from Adrienne! She was so helpful and animated in describing all the specials that I tried them for every course, and they absolutely lived up to her descriptions! Italian street corn (with a thoughtful lemon bath to cleanse my hands afterwards), monk fish with corn polenta and a slightly spicy side that complemented the dish so well! Both dishes were so delicious!! My husband had the linguine with peas and prosciutto that he loves so much he has trouble trying anything else, and the day’s bruschetta for an appetizer with burrata and heirloom tomatoes that he said was fabulous! All the local produce used in all of our dishes was so fresh and delicious and prepared perfectly! We split a beautiful pavlova for dessert with lemon and blueberry curd that was out of this world! I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant on the main drag in Durham.
This was my first visit here, and will definitely be returning! This was the best dinner I have had in a long time. The waitress was amazing. I am not a huge fish eater, but the way she described the monkfish special, I had to get it and was not disappointed!
My wife had the lasagna and being a picky eater, stated it was the best lasagna she had ever had (and she makes a mean lasagna herself!).
Both the apps and dinner were outstanding, and I will be returning soon!
The food is delicious! It's nice to have an in-town restaurant that you can always count on. Our server, Adrienne, was so personable and accommodating to our every need. She was a delight.
Everything was delicious. We were comfortable and happy. The owners and waitstaff took extra care to make sure we had a great experience.
Fabulous painkiller to start, helpful waitress and charming solicitous owner.
A grownup, quiet.adult restaurant!
We eat out a lot and have gotten a little picky with so many good restaurants. There's not much room for new venues to exceed high expectations. Ciao Trattoria did, and more. Every dish was superb and original - you can't miss the creativity and talent behind them. We almost got tired of saying "this is soooo good." Dishes that sound mundane, like lasagne, pizza - are redefined. The atmosphere makes you feel grand, generous tables and booths. The bar had ample space and great lighting. The service was super attentive. We're planning to be new regulars.
It's hard not to be bias when the Chef is your son. Everything was wonderful! Everyone did an amazing job in helping us celebrate our 40th Anniversary! Keep up the good work.
We thought this was still associated with Marianne Esposito but it is not. The food was good! The service was ok....I ordered the lasagna and there was no cheese in it! I should have read the menu better but it was still very very good. My husband had chicken parm and he said it was good. The restaurant is certainly a good value. I just wish they had a bigger menu. I wanted a Caesar salad and it was not offered. Then, I saw the panzanella salad on the special but they said they could not make one. Another oddity is they charge you $1 per piece for focaccia bread...the pieces were very small and I thought if you want to offer bread, raise your prices by $1 or $2 I felt that was a nickel and dime move. I wish their menu was a little bigger with more Italian dishes like Marsala or piccata and they only offered one soup which was the special. Overall, it was good, but we were hungry when we got home....I would definitely go back the food was good and you cannot beat the prices!!!!
GREAT FOOD & SERVICE! HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHICKEN CACCIATORE.
We love Ciao. We go a couple times a month. Peas and prosciutto was great. Absolutely loved the corn and lobster soup. My wife said it may have been the best bite she has ever had. The food was piping hot and our server, Brady was very attentive. This was our anniversary dinner and it did not disappoint.
We started with an excellent pizza which had a very light crust and tasty toppings. Our pasta dishes were excellent cooked al dente with light wine sauce. Wonderful cheesecake for dessert. Only issue was the $14.00 cost of a martini.
Went for my husband's birthday dinner. First time visiting and we were not disappointed. Food was incredible
Great upscale casual authentic Italian — we will be back!
Outstanding food and service from start to finish! Will certainly be coming back soon and would highly, highly recommend as a date night treat.
Had a great meal. Sat are the bar and had a delightful evening.
The mussels special with saffron and fennel was an outstanding appetizer, we sucked up the sauce with our bread. Hubs had the lasagna, another winner! I had the salmon special, delicious flavors. Had a very tasty side of eggplant parm for our vegetable. Dessert was raspberry almond sponge cake with a fondant icing. It was a perfect ending to a great meal. Nice variety of wine, cocktails, and beer available. I recommend the painkiller! Yum!!
Service by Alexa was very attentive. Had a visit with the restaurant owner who stopped by to check on our meals and experience.
I would highly recommend Ciao Trattoria. 🍷 Salute!!
The food was awesome and my husband loved his mixed drink! Service was friendly and accommodating to us out with our two year old.
Everything was great! Food was delicious. Server was wonderful. On Wednesday some bottles of wine are half price. It's a great place.
I am a local and enjoyed meeting the owner who introduced himself and chatted with us, ensuring that our meal and service met our expectations. The food was fantastic! So fortunate to have such a high quality restaurant in this small college town.
Excellent food and service. This place is as good or better than any expensive upscale Italian restaurant in Portsmouth and at a much better value. Will be back!
Food was perfection. Fresh high quality, generous portions just wonderful. Service was also outstanding. Not to be ignored, the prices were reasonable for such a high quality experience. Will definitely be back
