My family loves celebrating here in authentic French style.
Under appreciated neighborhood gem. Filet mignon with pepper sauce is excellent as is the artichoke side dish. Attentive, uncrushed service. Highly recommend.
The prix fixe brunch @ 25 was a great bargain, and delicious. Full size portions of everything made the three courses more than enough food, and the mimosas are made with good champs, making them delightful.
I absolutely love this restaurant. I hadn't been for a couple years but it's every bit as good as I remember. It's the most authentic food and experience I've found in the Bay Area, and the waiters/ proprietor are always so friendly. Oh and then the food. The salade de crabe and the noix de st jacques ... still melting.
Went locally to celebrate 2 Birthdays - which was noted on the reservation but not acknowledged by staff. Staff was attentive and polite. Menu is large - which may be the issue of being spread too thin. One page would be sufficient if done very well with seasonal ingredients. Crab salad delightful. Ahi carpaccio was cut too thick and uninspiring. Lamb dish and hanger (tiny but good) were prepared to order. Duck confit Wellington should be retired and perhaps reborn to simple duck confit. Location is great (with parking) and this has the potential of a great local spot someday.
The food at Chou Chou is consistently good. We had the Angus Boeuf Bourguignon, Angus Hanger steak frites, and the Filet De Saumon. All were quite good and worth ordering again. The steak in particular was tasty and tender. We have eaten, among other dishes, the Crêpe À L'Agneaux Rôtis (Roast Lamb Crepe) which is not only tasty and large but well filled with lamb and the other ingredients.
Our server, Tania, whom we have had before, is quite efficient and friendly. She's there when you need her and not when you don't. The real criteria for good service.
Go and enjoy!
Chef came to our table, delicious food, made a flaming crepe for us, too. Huge wine list, French food, warm lighting, not too big or small. Highly recommended!
The male waiter stunk of cigarettes and it being a small restaurant, walked past us often and he wasn’t friendly. The other staff were very nice. The food was nothing special and my steak was overcooked, so much so that I had to send it back. The duck wellington had a very thick crust, too thick for our taste. The almond tart was inedible. Won’t be coming back.
Great food! Great service! We have never had a bad experience here and will definitely keep going back.
Elegant French food perfectly prepared and plated. Delicious and presented with flair. Service is impeccable and menu has many choices. Highly recommend.
Really had a fabulous meal...simple, quick and yummy. We will return again and again.
I was recently in France and enjoyed revisiting wines I had when there. The entrees were creative and delicious. They did a wonderful job on my favorite - french onion soup
It has been a while since we last were at Chou Chou, and it’s even better than we remember. The food was excellent. We all had the SF Restaurant Week specials, which were an amazing value. Our niece and her boyfriend both had mussel appetizers, boeuf bourginon, and fruit tarts for dessert. Hubby had the incredible French onion soup and pork chop, and I had the salad and salmon. Excellent! Service was lovely. We’ll be back - frequently - again!
The waitresses were friendly but not the old dude. He was kind of rude actually. Is this a family business? Because that would explain it.
This was our first visit. It seemed as if regulars received better service/attention than us first timers. We were not made to feel welcome. We will not be back.
Excellent as always, we love their selection of main entrees
Lovely quiet neighborhood restaurant with fre parking. Food and service were excellent...CAB
Valentine Day-after dinner
The food was excellent- I ordered a rare steak, which was cooked to perfection- my wife’s salmon was excellent.
Our only complaint was being seated at a cramped table near the door, which was breezy and cold when people entered or left.
Special Valentine dinner very good a little pricey but how often do you go to Valentine day dinner.
My dinner ended well with the dessert. Île Flottante
Light soft meringue, Vanilla Cream, Caramel, and toasted almonds.
Soupe À L'Oignon: served hot and nicely cheesy. Cuisse De Canard Confit Wellinglton: generous portion, maple vinaigrette too sweet for my taste. Soufflé Aux Champignons: very nice - our favorite that evening. Service outstanding.
My family and I have dined at Chou Chou several times in recent years now. This last occasion we had more interaction with the chef/owner. It would have been great if he had a welcoming and pleasant attitude throughout, however, he seemed to have mixed feelings about us. Being the first patrons of the evening he saw us seated yet ignored us. Later on he came by to take our orders but again wasn't friendly. He also did some serving yet seemed irritated that I intended to share my appetizer and had moved the dish to the middle of the table; thus, upon seeing what I did he spoke not a word but proceeded to hurriedly replace the dish to its original setting. Later on he did wish my husband birthday greetings yet didn't invite any staff to join him. I noticed that he was quite open and jolly to other patrons except if they were a certain race. I find it to be very unprofessional behavior for an establishment's owner.
As for the food, well, as usual it was all right yet not anything extraordinary. The same menu has been around for years now.
This is a great French restaurant. The food is excellent, the service is not rushed and overall the experience is a wonderful comfortable dinner. I especially liked that the tables were not crammed against each other and one could easily have a conversation while eating. I would recommend the escargot, the lamb chops and the Ile flottant.
Love our neighborhood restaurant. French onion soup and steak tartare.. Perfect for a Friday evening not cooking at home.
Always a wonderful place to whether for a special occasion or just a night out for dinner. Food is always delicious, the staff very attentive and always leave with a smile on my face. You will no be disappointed.
Needs an overhaul... dining room decor is dusty and dirty.. makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is..?
Charming little french restaurant in a quiet neighborhood of San Francisco. Good hearty country french cuisine. Amiable staff. Easily accessible by SF Metro.
Stumbled across this restaurant after seeing it in SF Restaurant Week. Thought their prix fix menu was ideal for my husband and I. Such a lovely, quaint, little place. Service was impeccable. Food was superb. Will be back again. AND their prix fix is available every day!
The bread and butter was the main reason why I wanted to go back. The mussels and the steak and the creme brulee was the Cherry on top. So happy to see they have the $40 dinner special year round.
The people working there were nice. Seemed like a family owned restaurant, not a normal one with a specific server, and such. The food tasted at most okay, and it got us sick. And the decor upstairs really made me cringe with the tape holding the large crack in the ceiling. The floor was uneven. And it felt greasy up there. I have always wanted to try the place passing forest hill station since I was a kid, but I was hugely disappointed.
I went with a friend for the restaurant week and the service was good. All the food are pretty good except for the steak which was over cooked and the value was not worth it.
Food and services are very good. Cramped seating.
Everything was fabulous - the food, very French but reasonably priced.
We recently moved from the Washington DC area to SF. Washington has a number of exceptional French restaurants and we have eaten at many of them. Chou Chou blew them away. It was the best French food we have had in quite some time. The parking is easy and the service was great. We will definitely go back. It was a wonderful evening.
We each had the $40 dinner special which included 3 courses. I loved the French onion soup. I was full after the entree but couldn't resist the dessert. Good quality food and ample portions. Excellent choices of wine by the glass. The service was timely but a little brusque. This is a cozy neighborhood spot with yummy food.
The food was excellent especially the scallop. I will go back again for sure.
Good choice for a casual neighborhood French Bistro. Fish dishes and salads were excellent.
Great local restaurant. Hidden gem. Food is great and they offer great values. Staff always friendly and very attentive. The food reminds you of France without being there. Good selections and many choices to choose from. The onion soup is the best.
Always special! A small, authentic French bistro, the food and ambience are what makes us return for intimate and cared-for dining. Like walking into a Paris neighborhood cafe, you feel like you are back in France. Not easy to find nor park on a busy street, it’s worth it. A reasonable cost choice these days, likely to be around $50+/person, you will feel at home and leave full of memories and good food.
