Always a good value mostly catering to locals. Nice wine list reasonably priced.

A great neighborhood restaurant for French food. French onion soup and the duck dish are my favorite. On an on-going basis, they have Restaurant Week menu ($40/pp for a 3-course meal) which is quite reasonable.

We were excited to try this neighborhood restaurant but sadly we were left rather unimpressed. The service of the staff was amazing and they were very attentive. What fell short was the food. The beef tartar way over seasoned. We could not taste the beef at all, and all we tasted was the mustard. The salmon dish was also not successful. There was way too much dill, and it overpowered the dish completely. The artichoke hearts in the dish seem to have come straight from a can and left untreated or elevated.

Chou Chou is a hidden gem! The ambiance is very pleasant with Sinatra playing quietly in the background. The service was fantastic! And the food was top notch!

Our server made an excellent wine recommendation, and every dish was wonderful!

The place is ok, service was good. Food is very ordinary. Not the best quality.
Had not been for 2 years for this exact reason. Thought it may have improved.
No, same average at best.

I selected this restaurant after having seen it on Check please, Bay Area. I thought the atmosphere and the host charming. However, the food was a mixed bag. I had the Moules Mariniere which were flavorless, the Cuisse de Canard Confit Wellington which was very good with its hint of sweetness from maple syrup, and the Vanilla Crème Brulée which was more like a pasty pudding than a custard. The wine list was interesting, mostly french, which I appreciated. Overall, it was okay but I probably would not visit again.

Very relaxing dinner! The service was excellent, and we enjoyed all of our food (crab and avocado salad, French Onion soup, beef Bourgogne (so?), seared prawns, truffle fries and three types of tarts - two fruit and one chocolate.
This is a nice neighborhood restaurant. We will be back!

My first visit to Chou Chou and it is truly a French Bistro. The menu had many wonderful choices, hard to make decisions. The food was presented beautifully and also was delicious to the palate. The service was very attentive. Lovely neighborhood gem and the prices reasonable. Will definitely return.

The Duck breast was cooked to perfection, medium rare, so juicy, tender, and bursting with duck flavor. And the bite of rare filet mignon I took of my dinner partner was almost as perfect as the duck breast I ordered. The sides worked out wonderfully as well, one with truffle mashed potatoes, of which the truffle is definitely present, yet not overpowering. Melanie, our host/server, and the chef (?) who took our order and the overall service was fantastic. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a beautiful meal at a restaurant that is staffed by people who take pride in their craft. Restaurant has its own parking lot no less.

I love everything about this restaurant and hope that it can stay in business for a long time. The location is a little hard to find - 1 block from Forest Hill station - but once you know it 's there it's easy to get back to. And free corkage on Tuesdays!

A very pleasant surprise! French bistro with terrific food, Piaf in the background, and interesting wine.
Enjoyed the escargot, loved the shrimp in pastis with polenta. Mushroom soufflé and duck on the menu, too. A true neighborhood gem, near Laguna Honda.

This was our 5th meal chez Chou Chou, and sadly, not up to par. The porkchop was ordinary, and the mushroom soufflé was too salty and less appealing than previously.
No acknowledgement of our anniversary was made, despite my notation on Open Table.

Went to this place after a Giants/Pirates game. The place was about half full at 6:30 p.m. The server remembered us even though we had not been there in more than a year. The food was delicious and the two choices for prix fixe were varied. The one reason we don't go to this place more often is that we live in North Beach and it is a long slepp across town for us, but we have decided to make the effort to go here more often.

First time at Chou Chou - picked it for its location which was very close to a function we were attending later that night. My wife and I both had the $40 three course SF restaurant week dinner which they, apparently, feature all year long (not just during restaurant week). Food was quite good and included an appetizer, an entree and a dessert as part of this deal. My only criticisms, and they are minor ones, is that the tables for two are very small and close together and the two glasses of wine we ordered came quite warm - much higher than room temperature. Other than that, this was a surprisingly tasty and pleasant dining experience. We plan to return.

This is a delightful French bistro. Limited free parking is available, a rarity in San Francisco. I especially enjoyed the confit de canard Wellington and the steak Tartare. The escargots were meaty and excellent. The mousse au chocolat was very tasty without being overly sweet. Well-recommended.

Many people assume that French food consists of very small portions, but that is not the case at Chou Chou. The food was generous in size and very filling. We had the Restaurant Week Lunch (appetizer, entre, dessert) for $25 each. We both had salad; it was delightful. For the entrée , my friend had the mussels; I had salmon crepes. Both were delicious!! The crepes were loaded with salmon; I was barely able to eat it all. Fortunately there was just enough room left for dessert. We had chocolate mousse and crème brulée. Everything we had was delicious, including the wine which, of course, is not part of the $25 price! The atmosphere is very nice and our wait person was pleasant and attentive. My friend and I are both looking forward to our next visit, when we will include some family and friends.

Reservation was honored promptly (restaurant was half empty although it's a small neighborhood spot). Menu was puzzling, plastic coated, and lots of items. I ordered mussels and my husband had the prix fix of mussels, duck confit and apricot tart. The mussels looked like they were steamed in white wine and mined shallots but then about a quart of milk was poured over them so they were swimming in a flavorless liquid. Fries were extra and tasted as if they had been fried in a heavy indigestible oil originally then reheated in the same oil. The duck was a big pumped leg on a bed of carrots and potatoes which were OK but the duck was inedible. The tart looked nice. The service was too attentive; as soon as a utensil was put down, the plate was whisked away. We were in and out in one hour. Not very relaxing.

The food has been uneven at this bistro - though the service has always been excellent - but this evening it was all good, though unremarkable. We both had hanger steak which was very tasty and properly-cooked; the fries were a bit rough and ready but the aioli and the blue cheese sauce were excellent though standard bistro fare. My PEI mussels were well-cooked and the sauce good, though not quite as oceanic as I like it. Dessert was okay.

We were at Chou Chou for mother's day. Food was fantastic, my husband and I had filet mignon, it was done perfect as we have requested. My mother ordered duck, she wanted the duck leg confit, somehow she got dish that was duck breast. Don't know where confusion started. We told our server and they brought us the duck leg confit. My mother just stayed with her dish and she enjoyed it. Our server gave us good service even with the confusion. Their bread was warm and crunchy!

I made an open table reservation for Saturday, May 13th, 2017 for a Mother's Day Dinner. I chose this restaurant because it seemed interesting and I thought my Mom and my 4 siblings would enjoy it. The food was underwhelming especially when you consider its prices - the foie gras was suppose to be seared, but it came out cold - that's not seared. The service however was worse. The waiter was a tall man who lacked charisma and attentiveness. I asked for my bread 4 times before finally receiving it. I had ordered a glass of wine and did not receive it until I reminded the server several times as well. I would not come back here and I did not enjoy the food or the service. The restaurant itself was small and cozy so service should be quite easy especially when maneuvering around the restaurant space, but the server was more concerned about other customers than my table. I wonder if he did not care because the 18% gratuity was already added since my party was 5+.

sincerely,
underwhelmed customer.
