Chotto Matte London
What is Nikkei?
Years ago Japanese immigrants travelled to Peru for work and could not find their authentic ingredients; to overcome this they used local ingredients to substitute. Nikkei was born.

Outstanding food. The duck (very tender ánd crispy!) , the tuna sushi (best ever), the mushroom tostada’s: yum yum yum!
Took my daughter & her BF there for a joint birthday treat. Amazing ambiance & food. Service was friendly & professional but a bit disorganised (we didn’t get one of the dishes we ordered despite two reminders). That said, they did a lovely plate for my daughters birthday desert which made her evening!
Great cocktails and excellent wine list.
Very cool restaurant, loved the ambiance and the layout is very relaxed - very comfy chairs and tables nicely spaced out. The food is very expensive as are the drinks with a bottle of wine starting around £50. The recommendations were excellent and we had a great meal and great wine. It was a little cold as I was sat under the air conditioning unit.
Nice place, great stuff but uncomfortably low chairs
Lovely restaurant with amazing food and service! Would highly recommend this restaurant.
The noice level in the restaurant area was super high. We felt like sitting in a club. Very difficult to communicate with each other across the table. Food was good. However quite expensive for what it was.
I had dinner at Chotto Matte with my wife to celebrate our 1st anniversary, the food was really good but considering the prices I expected the service to be better and the Music was so loud that we struggled to have a normal conversation. after one hour both my wife and I had a headache. We politely asked the waitress to lower the volume of the background music but nothing changed. Not sure if I will come back.
Food was good, service was terrible. Service was so poor I asked for service charge to be removed from my bill. In the restaurant it took over 10mins for me to receive a bottle of beer. We ordered the £60 set menu and food was being served at such a pace that before we'd finished one dish the other one had already arrived. After our meal we went to the bar downstairs which was fairly busy. They had 2 bartenders. It took 25mins to get 2 cocktails. We saw so many people leave after just one drink, as did we.
Great party place, however if you want to have a conversation with your date or friends you better have good lungs and voice . Food ok, service was slow and it took them 20 min for the octopus to come, however I have to say they subtracted or of the check .
Definitely recommend doing the shared menu for 2 - a lot of food and so delicious. The chef prepared the best passion fruit suflê I’ve ever had!
Everything was great except the waiter was not very attentive and took forever to continuously order our drinks
Food is good, ambience not so good.
Very bad service. Asked for a sake recommendation and the waitress ineloquently made clear she doesn't drink sake and has no recommendations. Luckily we relied on our own choices for food else we may not have ordered anything. Very poor experience and I would not want to return nor recommend.
Nice place, with very good food and ambience. They have a very nice piscosour and for chilean people they serve piscola!!
Noisy place that attracts a crowd of out of towners having birthday dinners. Food was sublime. Service was great. Would probably be better mid week rather than the weekend if you prefer a more intimate vibe.
Great night and great food. Music was enough to create a lively atmosphere but not too loud that we couldn’t hear each other. Food was amazing and very helpful and attentive service. Will definitely return.
Very poor service and extremely wrong attitude.
We booked a table for brunch, and wrote a note in the booking that we were specifically going for brunch. However, when arrived we were told that the brunch hours have finished, even though it wasn’t mentioned anywhere on their webpage that brunch hours were limited.
And the service is also very poor; we were waiting at least 20 minutes until the waiter arrived.
Food is nice, especially Japanese side.
Overall, disappointing experience.
Interesting selection - we had the taster menu and the food was well prepared and presented. Overall a good experience.
I have been going to Chotto Matte for many years now and it has always been excellent. This time it was an absolute disaster! The food was served in an all over the place manner like I was at a fast food restaurant. My friend who has particular allergies was unaware what her ordered meals were. Our table was at 9.30pm, we were seated at 10.10 and we had our first items at 10.45. We asked 4x for the wine list and we almost finished our food when we got the wine (which btw was terrible), it took the chef 30-40min to bring us 4 nigiris. We kept asking for the tea that came cold at the end of the meal and all that right underneath the speakers so conversations were impossible.
The service was clearly all over the place and badly organised, they probably had too much on their plates as it seemed the area was understaffed. all in all not worth the bill we paid by far! Even after the small discount I felt I have been cheated.
Lovely food and lovely restaurant, however waiting over half an hour for my booked table ruined the experience for me and my friend who had travelled far to see me, it was very embarrassing.
The food was excellent, but let down by incredibly poor execution, poor service and poor ambience.
Arriving at 5-10mins early we grabbed a drink at the bar before waiting 25-30mins to get seated. I suspect it was only because I went to ask what was happening that they decided to seat us. Service just went down hill from there, having to wait 20mins before someone came to take our drink and food order, offering no explanation of the menu and seeming put out that we were ordering additional dishes.
Our ordered water failed to arrive, so after another 25mins of waiting for any drinks we flagged someone down who went to sort it - only to find at the end of the night that they'd just ordered it again so we were being double charged for the resturants inability to deliver.
The food when it turned up was amazing, but again was delivered in a terrible manner. Virtually all of our food arriving at once with no explanation about what anything was, not enough space on the cramped table to actually place the food and being made to feel like we had to rush the food to make space for what was constantly arriving. Also had to ask for soy sauce for our sushi and then once it was finally given had to also ask for small pouring dishes for it.
As I said at the start overall the food was very good, but was let down by Nandos level service and staff that seemed more interested in making fun of their customers (yes we witnessed them mocking people as they walked away from tables on more than one occasion) and and a music level that was just too loud to be comfortable. Having to shout to make yourself heard to your companion across a small table is that an enjoyable experience.
Great night at Chotto Matte. Great food, with standouts being the Ojo de Costilla, Pork Belly and the desserts. Literally didn’t have a single bad dish. Great service too, very attentive and never far away. The decor was fun and unique, with dim lighting and nice background music that didn’t have you shouting to the person across from you. Definitely recommend!
Service was below expectation, lack of knowledge on simple menu related questions and incredibly slow, sporadic service.
I’ve been coming to Chotte Matte for years and my recent trip was poor.
Great food, great vibe but really slow service...
Been a few times and love the beef tetaki
Great food and great service and not stingy with the alcohol 🙌🏻
Service is very slow. Server nowhere to be found. Had to wait for a drink for 30 minutes becauSe the bar was busy!!! We had a reservation at 9. Pm we reached at 9:10 and had to wait for a table which was supposed to be ready. Food was actually good.
Horrible service. We waited for a table for 40 minutes for a pre-reserved table. They apparently overbooked and could not manage the crowd. Finally got a table since we agreed to share it with someone else. :/ The service then was so poor - the waiter was cold and unfriendly. The management couldn’t bother any less. Even though the food was decent - it ruined the entire experience
Amazing food, excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. We will be back!
fun! good music and food
One of the best restaurants in London. I didn’t quite know what to expect. But the cuisine is one of a kind! It has its own style.. Bags of flavour. Great ambience. Definitely recommend!!
The food was yummy and the staff attentive with good atmosphere
Dreadful! Music so loud we could not talk. Service incredibly slow. They say servers will help you select dishes to your taste - no chance! The one serving us didn’t even know the food - when I even just asked between 2 dishes all they could do was read from the menu! We only ordered 4 dishes and they forgot 2 of them! When we reminded them one turned up but the second never did! One of the dishes we ordered was marked as “spicey” - we asked for extra spice if possible but when it turned up there was no spice at all in it! A complete failure! Never again!
Terrible experience, each dish was being served in 15 minute intervals which was allegedly a ‘plate sharing’ concept. Specifically told the server not to add scallions due to an allergy but was in excess in each dish. First and last time.
The service was appallingly slow, to the extent that at the end of the evening after waiting a considerable tome for a coffee I got up went to pay the bill letting the server know that the coffee had not arrived.
I commented to the server that whilst the food was as good as when we had dined there a couple of months ago the preparation/service of the food was unacceptably slow. The response I received was that they were busier than they thought they would be and that therefore they did not have enough staff to be able to cope. Whilst the honesty of the comment should be welcomed it does not provide any reassurance that the same issues will not re-occur.
Will not be visiting here again.
Got the tasting menu # 2. The food was pretty great. Being Japanese I'm often suspicious of Japanese fusion, but this had some good and surprising flavors. That said, I found the experience to be overpriced. A dinner for two with two drinks, two bottles of still water, and three side bowls of rice set us back 180 pounds and close to three hours (we waited a bunch between courses). The ambiance was weirdly dark and dungeoney too, from the black toilets (ew) to the black chain mail hanging over the windows of the first floor.
Good food, but given the other minuses I don't think I'd return.
30 minute Waiting before being sit and music far too loud . Despite service friendliness, and good food, the experience was rather poor due to the lack of organisation of the management.
Unless they change quickly I do not recommend it.
Service was really not up to a good standard... forgetting orders, having to wait up to 10mins to get someones attention to fill up our glasses with Prosecco from a bottle we ordered.
Overall the food was fantastic, some of the best I’ve had in London. But for me the service let this place down & therefore I didn’t give it five stars. The staff where unattentive & generally quite slow. We actually had to get asked to be seated when downstairs despite letting the girls at reception know that we had arrived some 30 minutes previous. We then had to wait some time to order & receive drinks & eventually the bill, nearly missing out train out of town. As I say though the atmosphere & food where great & exactly what I was looking for. If the rest can be polished up it will be an exception experience. As it stands I’d say it’s quite expensive for the currrebt experience you receive!
Our server Gio was lovely, upbeat and friendly.
Tostaditos difficult to eat with chopsticks!
Salmon cooked to perfection.
Was a long wait on the sea bass maki - luckily it was worth it.
We did the brunch and it was amazing! Enjoyed every minute of it... from the atmosphere to the food & drinks, everything was perfect!
