Chira's Restaurant & Catering
We attended the Thanksgiving buffet. The quality and choices were amazing, everything fresh and hot. Not sure I can do justice to the mashed potatoes with mere words. Service was great, everyone is friendly. Good value for price. We will be making this our TG tradition.
The food was fantastic! Our waiter was superb—friendly, polite and professional. It was the best Thanksgiving Buffet ever.
Lovely Thanksgiving buffet with salmon, turkey, roast beef. I would have liked another vegetable side available, as there was really just mashed potatoes and one "vegetable medley" available. Seasonal squash, brussel sprouts, whatever, would have been nice. Also, nothing on the gorgeous desserts table for gluten-free folks, just had to eat off the top of the crust on a pie. Simply not that difficult these days to cater to folks with GF issues. Our server was MIA - our table was walked by several times by a variety of waitstaff, but even with empty water glasses set at the edge of the table to draw attention, we were nearing the end of our first plate of food before we got water, after going up to the bar and asking. I would go back, but they definitely need to explore some improvements, particularly in how the staff handles buffets. There should be a willingness to jump in and help each other when they pass a table needing water or plates cleared. We still left a generous tip because it was a holiday.
My family had decided to go to Chira’s for Thanksgiving this year because last year the food was very good, and decided to go back. This years meal was not very good. The plates on the buffet table were all still dripping wet. This is something I would expect from Hometown Buffet but not from a place that was charging $28 a plate. I was disappointed that there was no ham, the turkey was very dry and the gravy was bland. I found the food to only be lukewarm too. There was no decor in the front of the restaurant? No decorations, just an empty space? Our waitress was not professional either. My son is 10 years old and she tried to charge him an adult price. She never asked if we wanted more drinks and we left spending $100 with tip and left unsatisfied with the quality and service. Next year, we will not be returning to the restaurant due to all of the things I have listed. The chef was so much better in 2018. The quality was too. I was disappointed to have worked all week saving money to eat out here and it wasn’t worth it. I will not recommend Chira’s to anyone.
This was the second year we went for their Thanksgiving buffet since last year it was reasonably priced, offered a variety of food, and we were all able to find something that appealed to our individual tastes. We also wanted to make this our family's annual TGiving tradition. This year we found several selections to be really delicious - even excellent; other dishes not-so-much. We all left full but not as satisfied as last year. We did go to an early seating as opposed to a later seating last year. Shouldn't make a difference but not sure the food was fully ready for the AM crowd. The turkey was perfectly cooked. The Ukrainian potato salad, salmon w/sauce, deviled eggs, rice pilaf and cheesy broccoli (although the florets could have been halved) were some of the other tasty highlights raved by our group as were the desserts - most notably the pumpkin, pecan, and chocolate mousse pies. The omelet bar was small but good. Other entrees and side dishes were hit and miss. A few of us got the first batch of mashed potatoes which were cold and chunky (inedible) and others got the second batch (which were smooth and creamy) said those were really good. The mixed veggies were cut in large pieces and unevenly cooked. The melons, which are out out of season, were good according to those who were lucky enough to get the middle sections. The other sections were flavorless. Overall, I found that the number of selections and inconsistent quality of food did not support the $6/pp price increase for the buffet which did not include a beverage- you have pay for those, even coffee. I was also surprised that Chira's did not post their holiday menu online like they did last year, which most restaurants do, so I was hoping that the price increase would coincide with additional food options or, at minimum, include a beverage. Neither applied so I could not justify a higher rating for value. However, the buffet had some excellent food selections and we all found something we liked.
Making a reservation through open table was ready. When we arrived, the table was set and waiting for us. The whole dining experience was wonderful.
Enjoyed finding this hidden little treasure in downtown. Lots of wood and brick, low levels of noise. Nice ambiance. Service was prompt and attentive. We both enjoyed our pasta choices that were quite tasty. Our only “complaint” was that both the Ravioli and the fettuccine were overly smothered in sauce. It was good, but really had to go hunting for the raviolis. Not sure if you can really have too much of a good thing, but this was close.
Mostly the only ones in this dark restaurant. Service was nice, but they were out of several of our choices. Hope this was just an off night for them.
We met friends and enjoyed a delicious lunch before attending a play at Verona Studio. Our waiter was delightful, the service superb, and the food both delicious and a good value. We would recommend Chira’s for a lovely meal downtown.
I was stood up so I never came to the restaurant so I have no idea why I’m recieving a review or why you said I checked in
Perfect except for the waiter missing a salad. No worries though, everything else was exceptional.
Service was slow and spotty. Dishes came out at way different times making some diners waiting for their food for up to 10 minutes before the remaining food began to filter out. The same dish (Prime Rib) was plated differently for two of our diners. One was covered with broccolini the other with carrots. Several diners had french fries with their dish, and they were not eatable, overcooked and pasted together with whatever the coating was. Some of the food was good. The onion rings are great, but it suffers from inconsistency.
My wife and I were celebrating a special event, and found Chira's.
The staff was amazing, the food was great, we will definitely be back!
Being downtown parking was a little bit of a challenge, but there is street parking all around.
Sadly, it was typical Salem service. One of eight meals was sent back; meat not cooked properly. Had beer on the menu but didn't have it. Asked for a brandy after dinner and they didn't have any. Server reached across people and didn't provide drink menu; got up and got it myself. If you wanted something you had to flag down a server. Cost was not real high but you can get better food and service for less. I wouldn't recommend not would I go back. Another Salem restaurant going out of business soon. Reed Opera House is great ambiance.
Chiras has been such a pleasure! Wonderful food, each dish has been plated beautifully and tastes delicious. Service has been at or above expectation, very attentive and professional. Also friendly. The ambiance is special and we have noticed each time that the music playing softly in the background has been familiar and fun. We look forward to going back. It is worth the drive from Portland.
This is a great little venue, the architecture, artwork, and ambiance are fabulous. The night we were there, there was a little jazz band that is a little loud for us to carry on a conversation. The food was superb with great presentation. Our wait staff was very attentive. Only Con - it is a little difficult to locate the restaurant if you are unfamiliar with downtown Salem.
It was our first time and we made a reservation for Saturday night. We noted on our reservation that it was our Anniversary. We found the food to be excellent, but the service was not. It was not very busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff, but it took a LONG time to get our drinks. The bread was not brought until AFTER we finished our soup & salad - which is also when our appetizer arrived. We rarely saw our server. If you worked on the service and made your customers feel a little more special (A Happy Anniversary would have been awesome!) you'd have a 5 star review!
great food and service. We have been there twice now and will be back for sure
Great food, service, music. Highly recommend
We felt welcomed right away. Service was warm, fast and friendly. The appetizers, meals and desserts were wonderful and beautifully presented. This will be our special occasion 'go to' for years to come!
Excellent food and service. The chefs really understand how to prepare and season the food properly.
Great atmosphere and good service and delicious food. They had a jazz band playing and were very good.
Service was as bad as any I experienced. Waitperson forgot to bring drink or deliver an appetizer. After 45 minutes no food was served and we were told waiting for food was to be expected and normal. Our party had theater tickets and had to eat fast and actually find someone to process out check so we could leave. I doubt we will ever return.
Good food. Nice place. Service was great ! For sure going back
Staff are very friendly and accommodating.
This was our third visit and this time we took our family from England to celebrate my sisters 60th birthday.
She ordered a steak medium rare with fries and garlic mushrooms. The steak came medium. And the chef burned the garlic on the mushrooms. She must have misunderstood the wait staff because it came with no fries. She had requested a salad as an appetizer- not realizing it was fries or a salad, even though the salad did come out with the rest of the appetizers so she had to wait for an added order of fries to come before she ate her steak. Her husband, her son and herself ordered creme brûlée’s for dessert. Hers and her husbands came with no custard under the brûlée. It was just flamed sugar. I did bring the wait staff over and showed her what was wrong. She was very embarrassed by it and immediately requested two new ones.
Unfortunately, this meal soured our evening celebration for her birthday a bit. Hate to suggest a restaurant to people and it not go well.
Food was very good and the servie was outstanding. My only complaint was that the menu discriptions were overly complex and misleading. It was a little weird walking through the empty retail space to get tot the restaurant - but once inside the restaurant it had great ambiance
The steak was good, but slow to be served. The fingerling potatoes and broccoli were tasteless. Bread plates were brought out and 10 minutes later the bread arrived and not the best bread. This was our second poor experience at Chira’s. The next booth had a family with a young unruly child and this did not help, parents and wait staff made no effort to correct the situation or move guests to other tables.
Appetizers and dinner were fresh, hot and delicious. Server was very attentive
Food was fantastic! Atmosphere is charming and intimate. Overall this place is great for large or small groups.
The food was delicious and the waiter made everything sound wonderful and he was very attentive. Nice setting and the price was every reasonable for a downtown restaurant. Would definitely go again and have already recommended it.
Our family moved here recently from southern California where we dined out very often and had excellent choices that were always outstanding. Chira's is the only restaurant I would rate on the level we are used to from our past location. I think the pricing is very good, service is always the best and they have a great menu...and the Happy Hour is great!!! If you are looking for fine dining this is the very best in Salem.
Had a lovely time, our server was amazing, attentive and we were very pleased. The food was amazing and will go again when we visit Salem
Lighting is too low which makes to food look not as appetizing. I ordered the crab and artichoke ravioli and was not impressed. When it came to the table, all you saw was sauce. The ravioli was super super hot inside but the rest of the sauce was not the same temperature. It was almost like the sauce was microwaved or something. Plus it was way too much sauce and not enough ravioli to match it. The dish all tasted like one flavor. Also I ordered a Hefeweizen with a lemon, and she forgot to bring the lemon and the beer was slightly warm. We were the only table in the restaurant that was occupied at the time.
Good Restaurant enjoyed it eminsly, we plan on eating there regularly.
Everything was great and there are other things on the menu that I would like to try. I was surprised that the fish taco was one piece of fish cut in two. I should've gotten the three-piece dinner instead. The tacos were good, though. It was just a surprise.
The service and the food were both outstanding! Coming from Washington DC I didn't expect such impeccable attention to detail with such a European I on quality. Every single thing about the experience, from the knowledge of the staff to the flavor and portion of the food we're amazing! I can't wait to come back and visit again. Thank you for a tremendous experience!
Waiter (Mathew) was excellent! The rack of lamb was very good. Would order it again. Ahi was delicious as were the crab cakes.
Beautiful place, nice atmosphere, great food and wonderful service staff. We were a party of 8 and everyone enjoyed everything about this place, they were very happy to have been introduced to Chira’s Restaurant. We will definitely be coming back.
This is the second time my husband and I have eaten here. The food is delicious. The staff have excellent customer service, and the atmosphere is relaxing. I will be coming back again. Love this place! They even have gluten free pasta.
We truly enjoyed our dinner at Chira's. We will be back. We did the 3 for $30 and felt we got good value for our money. The flat iron steak was superb. My husband said his ribs, although delicious, were a bit tough. The service out of the kitchen was a bit on the slow side, but we were in no hurry and were there to enjoy a relaxing meal.
