China Live Ratings and Reviews
Seeing an article in the paper we decided to try China Live for lunch. Service was good and attentive. Suggested Pork Bun Appetizer was excellent. Suggested Crispy Pork Belly was too much of one thing for just two people. Better for a larger group as part of many shared plates. Noodle dish was flavorful and full of shrimp, chicken and pork. Great spot for lunch but seemed a little expensive considering the many Chinese restaurant options in China Town.
The menu had changed since our last visit and the food times did not seem as unique as previousl. It is probably better to go in as just a couple and sit at the stations to watch prep. The gift shop is lovely.
The noise level is difficult and it is hard to sit on wooden cubes for a long get-together.
What a wonderful birthday dinner for my friends who were new to the China Live experience!
I knew that the food was amazing but I had comments from my friends like "the layering of flavors was amazing!" and " a party in my mouth".
Our service was impeccable with even sweet touches like adding flowers to our mai-tai's and bringing us plates and a candle for the sweet inspirations cake slices we had brought with us.
Can't wait to go again!
Really wish they would do something abt the noise level like put pretty Chinese fabric draping the ceilings. We had a late lunch and sat in the front near Oolong, the tea and dessert bar and the volume of the ambient sound was still really bad... Food was excellent, however.
We were three diners and ordered the two-course luncheon (choice of one appetizer and one main). Two of the appetizers arrived fairly promptly, followed by one of the main courses. After a long gap, a second main arrived along with the last appetizer. Long after we had finished the appetizers and the two mains, the third main arrived . . . but we were ready to leave. So they boxed up that meal, along with some other remains, and sent us on our way.
The food was excellent -- especially the dumplings, which were cooked perfectly and stuffed with very tasty ingredients.
The coordination of the kitchen with the server was terrible. We had to keep a sharp eye out for our server and she knew we were waiting for items to arrive; she apologized for the delays but seemed unable to do anything about them other than smile and assure us that our orders would be arriving soon.
I would return for another meal if I was in the area -- the food is very good and the price, while a bit high, was in line with the quality of the food on offer. But the service and coordination between the kitchen and the wait staff was really very poor.
I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The food was amazing especially the Pork buns and the potstickers. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable."
The food was phenomenal, with the standalone exception of the kung pao chicken which was very mediocre. The crispy skin chicken though was some of the best I have ever had. The desserts were creative twists on common dishes but this elevated them to a new level. The service though left something to be desired. We were constantly getting dishes brought to our table that we didn't order, including a fried rice that appeared literally 1 minute after the waiter took our order (which did not include fried rice). They also charged us incorrectly for some things we didn't order and it took two rounds of bill revisions to get it correct.
even though the restaurant was packed, we could still have a nice conversation without shouting at each other. The food is amazing and setting really nice and modern. We went for restaurant week and the portions were more than enough while sharing with 4 people, even gave us a gift and a drink was included! great deal!
We did the tasting menu for SF Restaurant week. It was delicious! We were able to try a few different apps and entrées between the three of us. Pork buns and dumplings were by far the best. Main courses were tasty as well - chow mein and kung pao. However, dessert wasn't their strong suit...We tried the Durian ice cream (it was a strange smelling experience), tiramisu (which was pretty much just cheesecake) and panna cotta. If you must have dessert do the panna cotta. Overall good experience- I'd go back.
Not ideal for a big group, it’s VERY loud. We went early and it was full (5:30 reservation) - maybe they weren’t fully staffed but our service was not great. It was hard to find our server and when he walked by, there was no eye contact. Luckily a very nice manager saved the day — but not until dessert time.
We took advantage of SF Restaurant Week and paid our 1st visit to China Live for lunch. We can’t wait to go back! We were fortunate to be seated at the counter overlooking the “steaming” station and had such fun watching the dumplings, pot stickers and soups being made. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. The food was delicious and the ambiance quite a notch up from the usual SF Chinese dining establishment. A wonderful addition to our dining scene!
Great help with changing number of diners and our arrival time. Very accommodating. Food was wonderful. We ordered well over a dozen items and all were excellent. One of our party is gluten free and at least 9 of our selections were gf without any compromise of quality or excellence of flavor. Wine was delicious and reasonably priced for the quality. We will definitely return when in SF. We had a great time.
China Live was delicious and fun. Our hostess was excellent, doing her best to accommodate a large party, in spite of our table being a few minutes late. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and did an excellent job recommending dishes for us. The soup dumplings and duck were the highlights of the meal.
Great food, great atmosphere, and an overall nice experience. We recommended China Live to some friends and they loved it just as much as we did. Our server was a little short with us, but the other servers were on point and very hospitable. The Peking Duck is a must as well as the Dim Sum and Pork. My dad and I were both a little under the weather, and the Eight Treasure Tea hit the spot! Finally, for dessert, the Sesame Cheesecake was different but very delicious. I can't wait to go back next year!
