China Gourmet Ratings and Reviews
This was not a very good meal. We had a reservation and there was no one in the place really but they still sat us by an elderly couple that was loud and a large group that was also very loud. The appetizer was burnt and not seasoned. The entrees were okay, my chicken tasted good but my girlfriends steak was very tough. The decor leaves a lot to be desired and feels extremely dated and dingy. All in all it was fine or whatever just nothing very great and I definitely will not be back.
I have been here numerous times, however, this last time was such bad service that I will not be back. We ordered drinks and after 20 min. I went to the bar and the bartender told me the waitress never put it through so I got our drinks at the bar instead. After another 20 min. She finally came and took our dinner order and the food came out room temperature. We ordered another round of drinks that took forever and the manager bought us the second drinks. Service is everything and the restaurant has gone downhill which is too bad.
We waited more than 5 minutes for a host to appear at the host desk. We heard one host whisper to another that our table had accidentally been given to someone else, even though we had a reservation. The second host came to us and said it would be a few more minutes wait because people were still at our table. We were seated at a table that was cleaned so quickly that it was still wet. A question asked of one of the two servers helping us about dietary content was never responded to. My husband’s chicken dish contained some reasonably done pieces of chicken and some that were totally raw. He quietly brought it to the attention of one of the servers and said he didn’t want food recooked and that he didn’t want to make a fuss over it as we were entertaining guests for a holiday meal. There was no apology nor was there any credit on our bill. We were charged full price for a meal with raw meat in it. The manager? Owner? came by with chocolate dipped fortune cookies, which was nice, but he set them directly on the table and did not present them with a plate or bev nap.
We’ve brought family and friends for Christmas Eve dinner here for many years. This was a horrible experience compared to previous ones. It was extremely disappointing and embarrassing to us. I don’t know that we would feel confident entertaining guests at this restaurant in the future.
There were 6 of us and the placement for our business conversation was perfect. The service was outstanding. I could not believe the individual serving our table recited back all 6 varied orders perfectly. The preparation and the seasonings were excellent. Fresh food, and such an assortment. This is a real GEM!
Only error which as a vegetarian can be an issue- asked if hot and sour was vegetarian,
one server shared they use vegetable broth for their soups (not chicken or beef broth)
the other server I shared I was a vegetarian. Had ordered the hot and sour with vegetables she mentioned. In the kitchen they either missed the message, or were not use to making it that way, added chicken wit the tofu.. I noted it about 1/2 way through. That is disappointing for a vegetarian. However, I did tell the owner, and believe he comped the soup- he was going to do something - he did confirm kitchen had added chicken. I did not see the bill but assume he
did make the adjustment. Thus- if you wish vegan or vegetarian ask ALL the questions, and confirm meat, fish, fowl etc and if only in a broth state- are not to be served to vegetarians and vegans. My vegetarian fried rice was delicious.. as was the vegetarian spring roll!!!
We claim China Gourmet as "our" favorite restaurant in Cincinnati. It is under new management, but the new owner (Matthew) has been there for 30 years, so has been trained well in the art of pleasing the customers, and continues to teach that to his staff. The chefs have changed over the years, but the recipes apparently remain and there is a reason for the "Gourmet" in the name. Good wine list, quiet enough for conversation, lovely enough to feel a bit pampered, and yet somehow, this place seems to still be a fairly well-kept secret. We have had quiet dinners for just the two of us to birthday parties for friends with over 40 people, and they always pull it off flawlessly, or nearly so. Lately Tuesdays have been our favorite because of the discounted lobsters -- try them in black bean sauce and request them out of the shell. Yummm. CLBWZ
We had not been to China Gourmet for some time as we live in another part of the city.
The food--I had the new mu shu duck and my husband had the scallops--was great. And the portions were large enough to provide part of a second meal.
The service was friendly and efficient. My water glass was never empty--a point I take note of when it is :)
Family weekend at daughter's university and some changed plans found us time for a nicer dinner. I checked Open Table for recommendations near our hotel. We booked at China Gourmet. The food and service were both amazing and it ended up being a very pleasant and relaxing time together. Highly recommend.
We happened to go two nights in a row, because of circumstances.
I have gone to China Gourmet since it opened. My meal both nights was terrible and I will not return. Other people I was with felt the same way.
It appears it is under new ownership. Very sad.
The trout with black bean sauce was very good. However we prefer the thick black bean sauce and the last two times they brought us hoisin sauce by mistake. When we brought it to there attention they brought us the correct sauce. When Tenley was there this never happened.
This is our favorite Cincinnati restaurant so I hope it maintains its high standards
China Gourmet is still excellent. Even though it is under new management Matthew has worked with the Moi family for 20 years. Tenley still comes in if needed.
Our favorite the rainbow trout was done to perfection and the moo shoo duck is excellent.
Thank goodness the quality is still superb.
After attending china gourmet for 25 years now it is still the greatest restaurant in the US. Tinley Moy runs an excellent operation. Brown sauce is world class. Black bean sauce is the best I have had. Highly recommend the dem sum, green beans and lobster. Ask them to make a custom dish. They will accommodate.
I've been to this, my favorite Chinese restaurant, too many times to add much. This was a, rare for me, lunch meal with an old friend and former business colleague for whom China Gourmet was not on his radar. The food was excellent as usual, too the point where my younger friend said: "This was great. I don't why I haven't eaten here more often." I think that summarizes what most newcomers to CG also say. CG has been around so long that folk don't put it on there "in place" to eat list. I eat regularly each week at the ilk of Boca, Sotto, JR's assorted great eats, Kaza, Zula, The Mercer, etc. and I find CG fits in nicely on the quality scale. don't expect any of the current fad dishes or preparations, just good food at a price that doesn't break the bank. One last point: service during our quiet lunch was superb. Water and soft drink glasses never came close to empty. Many of the staff have been there for years - rare in the current restaurant atmosphere.
We always pick China Gourmet for special occasions. It is expensive so we might only go once a year. We always order the same meals because we love it so much. This time around the duck was very dry and the sesame cold noodles were mainly bean sprouts, not much noodle. We will still go back though, hoping it was just an off night.
