China Gourmet Ratings and Reviews
We claim China Gourmet as "our" favorite restaurant in Cincinnati. It is under new management, but the new owner (Matthew) has been there for 30 years, so has been trained well in the art of pleasing the customers, and continues to teach that to his staff. The chefs have changed over the years, but the recipes apparently remain and there is a reason for the "Gourmet" in the name. Good wine list, quiet enough for conversation, lovely enough to feel a bit pampered, and yet somehow, this place seems to still be a fairly well-kept secret. We have had quiet dinners for just the two of us to birthday parties for friends with over 40 people, and they always pull it off flawlessly, or nearly so. Lately Tuesdays have been our favorite because of the discounted lobsters -- try them in black bean sauce and request them out of the shell. Yummm. CLBWZ
We had not been to China Gourmet for some time as we live in another part of the city.
The food--I had the new mu shu duck and my husband had the scallops--was great. And the portions were large enough to provide part of a second meal.
The service was friendly and efficient. My water glass was never empty--a point I take note of when it is :)
Family weekend at daughter's university and some changed plans found us time for a nicer dinner. I checked Open Table for recommendations near our hotel. We booked at China Gourmet. The food and service were both amazing and it ended up being a very pleasant and relaxing time together. Highly recommend.
The trout with black bean sauce was very good. However we prefer the thick black bean sauce and the last two times they brought us hoisin sauce by mistake. When we brought it to there attention they brought us the correct sauce. When Tenley was there this never happened.
This is our favorite Cincinnati restaurant so I hope it maintains its high standards
China Gourmet is still excellent. Even though it is under new management Matthew has worked with the Moi family for 20 years. Tenley still comes in if needed.
Our favorite the rainbow trout was done to perfection and the moo shoo duck is excellent.
Thank goodness the quality is still superb.
After attending china gourmet for 25 years now it is still the greatest restaurant in the US. Tinley Moy runs an excellent operation. Brown sauce is world class. Black bean sauce is the best I have had. Highly recommend the dem sum, green beans and lobster. Ask them to make a custom dish. They will accommodate.
I've been to this, my favorite Chinese restaurant, too many times to add much. This was a, rare for me, lunch meal with an old friend and former business colleague for whom China Gourmet was not on his radar. The food was excellent as usual, too the point where my younger friend said: "This was great. I don't why I haven't eaten here more often." I think that summarizes what most newcomers to CG also say. CG has been around so long that folk don't put it on there "in place" to eat list. I eat regularly each week at the ilk of Boca, Sotto, JR's assorted great eats, Kaza, Zula, The Mercer, etc. and I find CG fits in nicely on the quality scale. don't expect any of the current fad dishes or preparations, just good food at a price that doesn't break the bank. One last point: service during our quiet lunch was superb. Water and soft drink glasses never came close to empty. Many of the staff have been there for years - rare in the current restaurant atmosphere.
We always pick China Gourmet for special occasions. It is expensive so we might only go once a year. We always order the same meals because we love it so much. This time around the duck was very dry and the sesame cold noodles were mainly bean sprouts, not much noodle. We will still go back though, hoping it was just an off night.
My first time at this classic restaurant. It is a beautiful setting, subdued decor and lighting with plenty of space-- no personal space challenges here, which is a refreshing change from the "hot new" restaurants around the city where people are practically at the same table.
We shared pan fried dumplings, which were very good, but not heated through. The filling was not hot. My husband had Crispy Duck, which he said tasted very good, but was not at all crispy. There was really no excuse, as this was a Wednesday evening, and they were not busy. My spicy chicken dish was very good, and I had enough left for lunch the next day. I liked having the choice of white or brown rice.
The low-end glass of chardonnay was $8 which is steep especially given the stingy pour; we each had two (should have gotten a bottle). Each entree was in the $18.00 range, which was much too expensive for what they were. I was looking forward to finally visiting China Gourmet, but must say that I don't think the total experience was worth the cost.
